The new M2 iPad Pro is finally here, with the same design, display, and cameras as last year's iPad Pro, but with the added benefit of performance improvements offered by the M2 Apple silicon chip.

Despite being a fairly minor upgrade, there are some noteworthy changes, new features, and things you should know about with the new 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro. We've rounded up four tidbits below:

  • "iPad Pro" is now printed on the back of the iPad Pro, unlike before.
  • Despite the iPhone 14 removing the SIM card tray in the US, cellular models of the new iPad Pro still feature a SIM card tray. The iPad Pro also still supports eSIM.
  • The iPad Pro now supports ProRes video recording in 4K at up to 60 FPS using the 12MP Wide camera.
  • The 16GB memory confirmation of the iPad Pro is still only offered with 1TB and 2TB storage configuration models. Other configurations have 8GB of memory.
The new 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro are available to order starting today and will begin shipping to customers on Wednesday, October 26.

I'm just waiting for the 15" with an extra usbc port🤤

What a lackluster update. I wanted to update my 4th gen Ipad pro to this but nothing really stand out. I think I'll wait another year for the next version.

Why has the iPhone 4k prores video and the m1 ipad pro is unable to do it 🤔
I'm not sure if this was intended as a joke, but for those who think this is serious, the A16 and M2 have hardware ProRes support on their media engines while the M1 doesn't. I predicted the M2 iPad Pros would support ProRes, so this was a no-brainer prediction. Now waiting for the wailing to come that not all features are available on the M1 iPad Pros.

I mean really. I have always loved the iPad Pro because of of how powerful it has always been, but now with that power we can get a 14" MacBook Pro with 16GB of RAM and 500GB hard drive with a full blown OS for an amazing price.
It's time Apple just bit the bullet and gave us a full blown touch and pencil supported MacOS device.
iPadOS can live on with the Air and base iPads, but it's such a shame that they haven't allowed the iPad Pro to grow up. Arrested developments has never looked so sad.

Realistically? Nothing. This line has been gimped by the OS more than anything since the 2018 refresh. My M1 is fine for what it is but if Apple would just allow a full version of MacOS to be loaded onto it I would probably ditch my Macbook and have a true all one device that did everything I needed.
I assume the above fact is why Apple doesn't do that, which is extremely aggravating.
macOS would suck on the iPad Pro and would kill it.

Aren't they on a 1.5 to 2-year cycle with the Pros already?
Yes, they average 18 months for updating the Pros. The M1 iPad Pro was released in March 2021, though the 2020 iPad Pro was one year earlier. However, the 2018 was 18 months before that. They're a bit inconsistent but it's mostly 18 months.

I have the 2020 iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard. When I upgrade, what I really want the most is the camera on top of the landscape orientation, as I almost never use this iPad in portrait mode. I see this feature in the basic iPad now. I’m wondering if whatever magnets and charging apparatus for the Apple Pencil 2 along the top is somehow a barrier to putting the camera components there? Otherwise, this change seems like a no brainer for the iPad Pro but they inexplicably didn’t do it.

That'll probably be next year. Apple doesn't like redesigning more than one device at a time, so with the base iPad done now, the cycle starts all over again. Next year will be the iPad Pros, the following, the iPad Air, and so on.

Since the base iPad moved the camera to the side, you can expect the next Pro to do the same with a new redesign. It also means there will be a new Apple Pencil 3 since the Apple Pencil 2 won't work with the Pros anymore. The camera would sit where a Pencil charger would. I predict the Apple Pencil 3 will attach to the back like the Samsung tablets do. That is probably also why the base iPad doesn't move to the Apple Pencil 2. There's no space for it, plus the upgraders may already have a Pencil 1, so that's a cost savings for upgraders.

Likely all those rumors of a glass Apple logo and new pin connector will probably be in next year's iPad Pro redesign.

If the M3 is 3nm it will have improved battery life.

2018 - Bigger upgrade
2020 - Smaller upgrade
2021 - Bigger upgrade
2022 - Smaller upgrade

The next upgrade will be more significant
Hopefully the next upgrade comes with something better than iPadOS.
It’s long past due for these iPads to run desktop apps.

Just like most comments in the forum, I agree, a total snooze of an update. I currently have the M1 11 inch which I use for work and I love it. Fast, speedy and if this thing sported Mac OS, it would rule. There is a reason why Apple stifles this ability.

I really do not see the need to update. Furthermore the lower end of the latest IPad having the camera placed and centered and WHY the heck apple did not do this for their latest pro model>?

FRONT FACING CAMERA: UUUUGH!

I would upgrade from the M1 if they moved the front-facing camera to the landscape side. My iPad is on the Magic Keyboard most of the time, and when I FaceTime from it, I take my iPad Pro off the keyboard stand and turn it Portrait mode so I don't look like I'm staring away from the person I'm talking to. (I know, they fixed this in the new cheapest iPad. I don't want that, I want the Pro with a camera in the correct place, dang-it.)

And what do you suggest Apple does with the Pencil holder and charger?
