that's the price of 14 inch MacBook Pro. I was thinking about that config but just have a hard time paying that much for an air with a inferior screen than my 16 inch m1

I also have a m1max 16.2 with that killer screen. After comparing both side by side. The HDR areas are not that inferior on the m2 MacBook Air. It’s certainly better than the recent studio display when showing HDR.

When set at rec.709. HDR videos are a treat to watch on the M2 MacBook Air.

I have been using a 512GB unit before getting this 1TB version.

That said. I bought this overall for the portability. The 16.2 can stay home with the Mac Pro.

This sounds much like my scenario. Love the 16 M1 Max, but it is too heavy to tote around in the field really. If I were going somewhere for a long while, I'd bring it but it mostly acts as my desktop. The M2 screen is MUCH better than I thought it was going to be. I really don't miss the 16" screen that much and the portability is amazing.

Watching that fireworks scene of The Gray Man on Netflix with the M2 MacBook Air Midnight on the plane was TERRIFIC.
The almost matt black frame, and the black keyboard, all do not reflect the overhead, window slit, or aisle stray lights. The 13.6 screen looked like a mini theater flowing a foot in front. With my Airpod Pros, this is great for NY-LA, or NY-London.

I recommend showing off some k-pop YouTube videos, especially from Blackpink and mamamoo on the m2 MacBook Air.

Agreed; however, I have found that Apple usually stocks machines with common BTO selections (like 16GB memory and 512GB/1TB).
At least 6 stores in the NYC area had the 16GB 1TB combo yesterday. They are all gone. So far today, One new location has some.

I have seen a few 16GB / 1TB M2 MBA models too. It’s the only ones with 16GB RAM that I have seen so far.

There are several of the 16 GB/1 TB M2 MacBook Airs available today in the Chicago area. They have them in Space Gray, Starlight, and Midnight, but no Silvers. Go get 'em folks!

Main 5th AVE store has the M2 MBA 16GB 1TB Midnight today.
Along with the beautiful WTC store.

For whatever reason, Apple never stocks the 16GB/1TB in silver. It’s weird.

I'm actually surprised they don't have a higher tier spec which includes the 16Gb as I'm sure memory is the first thing most folk will upgrade since 8Gb is pretty poor IMO and really limits the type of tasks you can use the laptop for.

They do. They stock Space Gray, Midnight, and Starlight in 16 GB/1TB configurations.

In less than 5 hours, 5 of the 7 stores with M2 MBA with 16 and 1TB are now out.
One new location at Grand Central has some.

Interestingly, mail orders are still well into September.
It appears Apple is creating excitement by controlling foot traffic at their stores. IMO

for that price why are they selling out so fast? for $2k a 14 inch MacBook Pro can be had. Is the screen difference that big of a deal or is it marketing hype? I have a 16 inch but obviously can't compare to the air screen.

Why not? People are buying a MacBook Air and not a MacBook Pro. Maybe they want the best portability that Apple offers? Or they don't like fans. Or they want to save $400. There are lots of reasons why the M2 MacBook Air selling well.

I have been using the 16.1 with M1Max as my office go-to since last year, but using it on planes is difficult.
After using the M2 MBA with 8 and 512 for a week, I can see why it is so desirable for travelers.
The new screen handles even HDR Youtube content with enough brightness in the specular highlights when placed next to the 16.1 MBP.

For productivity tasks, the M2 is as quick, if not even faster than even the M1Max.
Final Cut Pro renders and exports vary, as to which machine is quicker.

Yes, the 16 and 1TB M2 MBA gets to 1900+, compares with 2000 M1Pro 14" with 16 and 512.
The 14 screen is better, for sure, but I would not say, the M2 MBA is slower.

The midnight version is great for watching movies, anywhere.
