I just received my new starlight MBA today. I use it mostly on my lap on the couch. I have had the M1 MBA for a couple of months (still 90-day return window Costco) and before that several versions of 15" MacBook Pros forever. Anyhow, after using it for a short time I am noticing that when I type the edge is really sharp and digging/cutting into my skin. Uncomfortably so. Has anybody else noticed this?

"Sharp" edges? It's not that I don't believe you, but for a laptop to have a sharp edge enough to cut skin, it means it was filed and sharpened. The milling process of any MacBook chassis ensures no sharp edges are there.

Not like actually cutting the skin, just digging in and leaving lines, red marks, etc. Previous unibody models the edge seems to be more rounded and smooth. Granted I am not a touch typist on the couch, so maybe its an awkward hand position, but it is pretty noticebale.

Is this the edge in general or the slight dip that is near the bottom of the trackpad (where you place your fingers to open up the laptop)?

I don't find the edge in general sharp, but the "corners" of that little area south of the trackpad are fairly sharp (and has been on every metal-body mac I have ever tried out or used).

Memory-foam or gel wrist support is the answer, supporting the lower part of your forearm, slightly above the height of the Macbook base while you type. The problem with laptops, especially modern ones with batteries that last millennia between charges, is by their very nature they encourage their use in completely unsuitable ergonomic positions for extended periods of time.

This has been an issue for some since (I believe) the dawn of the Unibody MBP- especially the pointy bits on either side of the front recess. Just google "MacBook Pro sharp edges".

As one Redditor stated: "If you’re not bleeding you’re not working hard enough"
I second this. This has been an issue with the MBP for years. The oldest MBP with which I have had 1st hand experience with this issue was the 2009 model.

it's a feature; if someone tries to snatch your M2 air, you just poke them with a corner. i tried it on my cat/wife/friend/barista, and they all say it's effective (and will all be released from the hospital soon).

the cat didn't make it...
If Kill Bill was filmed today, Tarantino would use sharp MacBook Airs instead of katanas…

Same complaint here. It's quite annoying actually. Right on the wrist digging in.
Oh and as soon as i opened the packaging, I looked at the usb c ports and there was already some minor scuffs of paint removal (midnight color). What can ya do...

I actually noticed that when I recently checked out the M2 MBA and the M1 Pro MBPs in the local Apple Store.
Not so much on the MBA but definitely on the MBPs because they’re higher off the desk.
