Marketing is simple. Customer must be able to tell at a glance. And bigger numbers are better.
M4 Max 12 P-cores, 4 E-cores
M5 Max 6 P-cores, 12 M-cores - won’t cut it. Neither will 6 P-cores, 12 E-cores.
Marketing correctly figured this will be a messaging problem.
So,
M5 Max 6 S-cores, 12 P-cores
sounds way better. It has as many P-cores as the previous generation AND it has the new super-duper cores.

M3 to M4 was significant - M3, especially pro was a little bit of a disappointment from M2. It was better but not better in the way that M2 was vs. M1 generation.
From my perspective, mostly referring to the Max chips:

M1 to M2 gave us more RAM. M2 to M3 was a massive upgrade, with more RAM and more CPU cores. M3 to M4 was an incremental spec bump with no new capabilities I would care about. It's too early to say anything about the M5.

unfortunately "that" is not working out for music making, M4-Max vs. M5-Max.

We´ll see if M5 desktops, Max and Minis will differ to the MBPs. I doubt it

Seems M5 Pro/Max equals M3 Ultra on Geekbench. 18 new cores vs. 32 older ones. I’m not sure Geekbench fully takes advantage of 32 cores though.

Depends on the spec i guess.

Max?

Sure, great.
Non-pro, non-max? Sure, great.

But the M3 pro was…. a let down. Limited memory bandwidth, significantly down from m1 and m2 generation Pros.

M3 is the only generation so far where for the “Pro” variant there was a regression in some performance metrics.

Every other generation has been across the board, significant improvement.
