Apple today unveiled the M4 Pro chip, with key specifications including up to a 14-core CPU, up to a 20-core GPU, a 16-core Neural Engine, and support for up to 64GB of RAM. For the 14-core CPU, there are 10 performance cores and four efficiency cores.

The previous-generation M3 Pro chip has up to a 12-core CPU and up to an 18-core GPU.

Apple says the M4 Pro chip features "the world's fastest CPU core" with "lightning-fast single-threaded performance." It also advertises the M4 Pro chip's graphics performance as being up to twice as fast as the standard M4 chip.

Apple has not provided any direct comparisons between the M4 Pro and M3 Pro chips, so we will have to wait for benchmark results for that. However, in its Mac mini video announcement, Apple says the M4 Pro chip's multi-core CPU performance is up to 1.6x faster than the M2 Pro chip and up to 1.9x faster than the M1 Pro chip.

Other specifications for the M4 Pro chip include Thunderbolt 5 support with up to 120 Gb/s data transfer speeds, and an increased 273GB/s of memory bandwidth. That is a 75% increase in memory bandwidth compared to the M3 Pro chip.

The first Mac equipped with the M4 Pro chip is the new Mac mini, also announced today. Apple is also expected to introduce updated 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max chip options later this week.

Surprised they announced just the M4 Pro today. I would have expected the MacBook Pros to drop today so they could introduce both the Pro and Max.

This is pretty neat news for people who are into RAM. Because a maximum of 64GB implies a 256 bit memory bus like the M1 and M2 had but the M3 lacked. Combined with the 7500 MT/s memory Apple has used in the M4 chips so far, that’s 240 GB/s in memory bandwidth where the M3 had 150 GB/s.

Please make an article about how the P and E cores are divided, MacRumors. Thank you :)

Thunderbolt 5 😳 Nice, that's 120Gbps.

Finally fast external drives are possible.
120 Gbps in only one direction. TB5 is an 80 in 80 out connection but to get to 120 out it reduces the in connection to 40. This mode meant more for high resolution, high refresh rate displays moreso than data. Still twice the bandwidth of Thunderbolt 4.

want to see metal scores

Cities: skylines 2 is almost playable on my m3 pro 16”

Still have a week to return it (and give up my $500 refurb discount) if m4 pro turns out to be signaficantly better and the pricing makes sense

"lightning-fast single-threaded performance." I can finally run Crysis!

I wonder how the M4 pro handles Handbrake and Photoshop. My M1 is lacking in HB, and I'm trying out the latest Photoshop which is kind of irritatingly slow with some of the AI assisted functions.

No need to upgrade to a Max for dev work now that you can have 64GB RAM in a Pro chip machine. They boosted memory bandwidth too!

M3 Pro users like myself are getting scammed lmao. 6p+6e is such a joke combination. Glad they went for 10 performance cores on the 14 core version, instead of more useless efficiency cores. And 273 GB/s of mem bandwidth compared to the 150 GB/s downgrade from last year. TB5 also future proofs this thing even more. Man, I wish I had waited another year before I switched to Apple Silicon.
