Hot damn Christmas came early, I can’t wait for the MacBook Pro reveal tomorrow. The M4 Pro is looking great already, I can only imagine the Max
🤤

Ugh, this PR stuff is a little annoying as you don't get a good feel for the tradeoffs between the M4 Pro and Max.

Like M1 Pro was essentially Max/2 - M3 Pro was Max/3. Hard to know what to do.
Really! This is what you complain about?

Fully loaded M4 Pro mini lists for $4,699.00 which is not chump change.

Configured like my I9 mini server with 64GB OWC memory, 2TB SSD soldered in and 10GB ethernet, the new M4 Pro unit lists for $2,899.00

Are storage speeds listed anywhere?

I have a sinking feeling that large improvements to the speed of storage and ML compute / inference throughput are going to be reserved for M5…

Apple never lists storage speeds
This is not true, they just haven’t lately.

When there are big improvements they do mention them usually. I’d hope that would be the case with a better chipset and more CPU power internally but who knows. It’s unfortunate that depending on the configuration M.2 drives are up to twice as fast as their built in storage, maybe that’s changed.

Ordered:

M4 Pro (14/20)
64GB
1TB
10GbE

This is replacing a 2019 i9 MBP as my daily machine.
Congrats! Typing this reply on the same, i9 MBP from 2019.

I am currently torn between that exact mini spec and the M4 Max MacBook. Going to wait for the announcement tomorrow. If the M4 Max isn't totally incredible then I will just go for the mini too.

I will wait for reviews to lean about how silent the cooling is. I was hoping for M4 being fanless. If it's super-duper-silent no matter what, I may still get it (base model).

75% increase in memory bandwith, yet when m3 pro came out, a lot of people defended their reduction in memory bandwidth from 200 to 150, saying we don't need it. So Apple now gave us something, we don't need. /s

Also the jump to 10 perf cores just makes the M3 Pro a really terrible product.

10 performance cores!? What the hell was that downshift to 6+6 with m3 pro? It’s basically an m3 max now.
With 16gb base and 64 max ram it’s an amazing machine. Can’t wait for m4 max now.
Btw with 273 gb/s bandwidth can it be LPDDR6 memory?

want to see metal scores

Cities: skylines 2 is almost playable on my m3 pro 16”

Still have a week to return it (and give up my $500 refurb discount) if m4 pro turns out to be signaficantly better and the pricing makes sense
WAIT, really? playable like how? This is one of the title that I would want to be playable on my soon to be ordered M4 MacBook. I am deciding between Pro or Max. It seems that when cities grow to above 100K population, it's just slows down to a halt (1 or 2 fps). So I am leaning to the base model M4 Max (if it's the same distinction as the M3 max 30 vs 40 gpu).

playable through whiskey/gptk

my 150,000k city that ran around 30 fps on my 14000k/rx6800 is doing about 10-15 fps on my MacBook pro

I sold the intel box to help finance the m3 pro 16"

now I'm thinking either return the refurb m3 pro 16" for an m4 pro

or keep it and put the $500 discount towards a mini

I don't need the performance on the mabbook unless it's my only computer. I only really needed the large screen

Do we get the max now or in the spring?

Unfortunately I will need a portable, otherwise I would have invested in a desktop. But I moved too often and need travel light(er).

10-15fps is too low for me I guess, so in the m3 family I would perhaps also leaned towards M3 Max 30gpu. I guess the official Paradox Mods still don't work with the Mac/whisky setup right?

If your MacBook is still within the return window, indeed it's good to review whether thunderbolt 5 ports (very future proofing especially when you want to increase storage), and just the small (?) jump of speed compared to the M3. I do wonder whether people will notify a distinct increase in speed when comparing M3 pro to M4 pro (Youtube benchmarks is one thing and day-to-day workloads is another).

Good luck. thanks for sharing.
(I'm currently playing Elden Ring on whisky since little over a month and it's been a blast).

M3 Pro users like myself are getting scammed lmao. 6p+6e is such a joke combination. Glad they went for 10 performance cores on the 14 core version, instead of more useless efficiency cores. And 273 GB/s of mem bandwidth compared to the 150 GB/s downgrade from last year. TB5 also future proofs this thing even more. Man, I wish I had waited another year before I switched to Apple Silicon.

Your M3 Pro didn't get slower today. I'm still rocking a M2 Pro, works great. We should always applaud Apple moving the bar higher, and eventually I'll sell my MBP and get an M4 or M5 version secure in the knowledge that my MBP will retain most of its value for a long time, and a long time longer than any PC laptop.

exactly. I mean Intel just introduced a slower chip than their predecessor (it's MORE efficient though), and that also doesn't hit well.

With apple I learned to buy their stuff at introduction for full price or as soon as the discount kicks in a few months later (apple refurb or retailers discount). It's not worth it to by this much later when the price wouldn't change that much anymore (unless your circumstances doesn't allow you to wait).
