I have my Macbook on a stand. The cables need to route lower. I try to support the cables by putting the MBA away from the edge. But they're now very loose regardless.

According to this thread (2022... in the Neo forum??), this isn't anything to worry about: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/loose-usbc-port.2373479/

However, I use the official Apple USBc-HDMI & USB-A adapter and it's disconnecting at times.

I'll take a trip to the Apple store to ask, but what should I be prepared to say? Should I push for a replacement on the $50 USBc-HDMI adapter? Asking for the USBc ports replacement seems a bit optimistic.
Or are those adapters shoddy and I should buy something better for less money this time? (This is a straight question, not rhetorical and no sarcasm intended)

The MacBook Neo forum was renamed from the MacBook (2015) forum, which is why you see posts older than 2026.

Are both USB-C ports loose? Does the adapter disconnect from both ports?

Chances are, it's the port on the MBA. Changing out the adapter won't help. Don't let the adapter dangle from mid-air, especially since you have a heavy HDMI cable pulling on the adapter.

Digging into a bit more I found that the adapter works for a while, but after a while power to the USB port coming from the adapter just drops. The display still works. I think it's static build up due to having no grounding.

The port being loose on the macbook... I don't think that's the problem. The HDMI port on the adapter also seems unreliable; it's easy to knock and then the HDMI goes wrong.

This is looking like it's the adapter. It seems cheaply made. I better take it to Apple and get it checked out.
