This is likely due to delays in the full redesign of the M6 models, as well as the unstable nature of the US government's tariff policies. I'm guessing they needed more time to develop the big M6 release, so they're positioning the M5 to sit between their new, estimated production timeline of the M6. Tim Cook is also being pressured by the Trump administration to move more of Apple's manufacturing back to the states (or to friendlier trade countries) which I'm guessing is also throwing a wrench into timeline estimates. Since the M6 will be a complete model refresh, he may be moving its fabrication to a different facility. The conservative prediction is that the M6 models will have an OLED screen and a fully redesigned case. The less substantiated rumors will be that it'll have a built-in cell modem and possibly a touchscreen.

Article: "Alternatively, Apple could debut the M5 MacBook Pro in early 2026 and the OLED version in late 2026, but that would be unusual."

They did M2 Pro/Max MBPs in early 2023 and M3 Pro/Max MBPs in late 2023. So it's not like there's no recent precedent.
They should call it M26, for h….. sake.

This happens when a company believes they are so far ahead of the competition that they can coast for bit. Also when a subset of the so-called consumer say "finally" for a "slow down in advancements". If that's the case, that's the shortcut to the road bean-counters take towards the boneyard of complacent companies. I hope this is not what this is.

Maybe they cannot keep up the pace of cpu advancement and want to stretch it out. They cannot blame IBM or Intel anymore.

Interesting. Wonder if the same thing will happen with iPad Pros. Not sure what an M5 would do for an iPad.
Same process node, more transistors, so it would drain the battery quicker.

If they are delaying the M5 until TSMC has the 2 nm line proved out that would explain the delay.

Apple does not plan to refresh any Macs with updated M5 chips in 2025, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Updated MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models are now planned for the first half of 2026.

Gurman previously said that Apple would debut the M5 MacBook Pro models in late 2025, but his newest report suggests that Apple is "considering" pushing them back to 2026. Apple is now said to be "internally targeting" a launch early next year.

The current M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max MacBook Pro models were announced in October 2024 and released in November 2024, so pushing the M5 models back to 2026 would see Apple skipping a yearly refresh. It is typical for new Macs to come out in October or November after the September iPhone event.

Gurman does not give a reason why Apple is potentially "delaying" the launch of the M5 MacBook Pro models, but he says the timing is fluid, so there may still be a chance that we get the new Macs before the end of the year.

The M5 MacBook Pro models will have few changes beyond the M5 chip update, because Apple is planning for bigger changes in for the M6 MacBook Pro. The next MacBook Pro models are expected to transition to OLED displays and new case designs. Rumors have suggested the OLED MacBook Pro would come in 2026, but if Apple is planning to launch the M5 MacBook Pro models in 2026, that might mean the OLED model will be pushed to 2027. Alternatively, Apple could debut the M5 MacBook Pro in early 2026 and the OLED version in late 2026, but that would be unusual.

Apple is also planning to release M5 MacBook Air models in 2026, which will replace the current M4 models. Other rumors suggest Apple is working on a MacBook that has an A18 Pro chip in it for 2026, but Gurman didn't mention it.

The M5 MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models could be accompanied by a new display that Apple has in the works. Apple is developing an external monitor that is expected to be a follow up to the 2022 Studio Display. It is expected to launch in early 2026.

Good thing I decided to take a promotion and bought my M4 yesterday. :)

That's disappointing. I was hoping for a reason to upgrade my MacBook Pro this year.

Apple is fortunate in the sense that they can delay products/ projects as they see fit and not have to worry about competition.
Yep, but also this is what most companies that end up in the boneyard do, believe they can coast because they believe they are ahead of the completion. Not saying that is the reason, but competition doesn't slow down, they keep charging forward and steal the lunch of anyone sitting down taking a break. We've seen this time and again in the boneyard of once great companies who let complacency guide them.

The A18 powered MacBook will be the real highlight for Macs, especially if it comes in under $700. The M5 updated Macs will probably be a press release. The big changes for MacBook Pro won't come until the M6 redesign.

All of Apple's M4 MacBooks are fast, well reviewed, selling well, and regularly discounted on Amazon. Introducing a new M5 with whatever upgrades they plan could invite price increases due to tariffs. They may want more time to figure out the tariffs, see if they can cost costs elsewhere, etc.

No reason to hold back for the redesign to put an OLED panel in it.
There is also a 50/50 chance that OLED will make it into the old chassis based on a couple of reports I read, but I’m almost 💯 that OLED waits for the revised chassis. They want to drive upgrades from M1/M2/M3 and OLED and a thinner chassis will do that more than OLED alone.

I think the M4 iPad Pro is a relevant data point here. It was the combination of M4 and OLED that let them produce a significantly thinner chassis for the iPad, and I think the combination of M6 and OLED will be what enables the next (thinner) MBP.

I’m also hoping that the A18-powered MacBook is thinner and lighter than the base MBA right now.

The M5 is slated to be the biggest leap since the M2.

I’d argue the M3 was a much bigger leap because it introduced the new GPU architecture, with mesh shading, ray tracing, hardware AV1 decoding, etc. As well as going from 5nm down to 3nm fabrication.

The M2, on the other hand, was a relatively modest performance bump over the M1 without a lot of headline new features.
