Seems odd not to release in November to catch the Christmas customers. I can’t see anyone buying “a year old” MacBook.

Would make more sense to do a minor spec bump and call it “M5” just so that it appears newer/fresher for Christmas shoppers.

LAAAME. I’ve been eagerly awaiting the upgrade to M5… sitting here with my M1 MacBook Pro from 2021. 😑

This can only mean that the "pesky" upgraded more intelligent "Siri" is coming out then. They dont want to showcase hardware without a significant upgrade to the OS.
More like they don't want to deal with the class action lawsuit from people who bought m4 macs a generation prematurely due to the failed promise of AI.

Eventually, Apple needs to change the chip design as they cant make high-end desktop and Mac Pro grade chips due to SoC's limitations and rumors already suggested that M6 series will use WMCM design.

Maybe they cannot keep up the pace of cpu advancement and want to stretch it out. They cannot blame IBM or Intel anymore.
It's TSMC that will take the blame now if they can't move to new nodes on schedule

A slight delay isn’t a problem for me.
I’m quite satisfied with my M3 Pro MacBook.

That said, when will Apple finally release a MacBook with 5G?
I’d love to use my MacBook without relying on Wi-Fi or tethering it to my iPhone
- just open it up and be instantly connected to the internet.

With the recent departures in key roles, Apple getting publicly humiliated on the AI front, and trying to frantically release a redesigned OS on all major platforms, it is no surprise that the yearly cadence of Macbook Pro refresh has taken a step back. There is just too much to do and also maybe the Apple executive team took a look at the M4 hardware and determined and that is already more than enough to meet the demands that it was designed for.

Still going strong with my M1 Pro MacBook Pro, so I’m in no rush to upgrade until the new, probably lighter OLED models come out or the Airs get ProMotion. Hopefully this doesn’t push those back too much further.

It could be a combination of market uncertainty, ordering far too many products early this year with the tariff scare so needing to clear stock, and wanting to sort of match the roll out of the M4. Alternatively, they could be planning to refresh all of their notebooks at the same time in the spring simultaneously, while introducing the new MacBook with a A18 Pro chip.

Assuming this rumor is true, this is another strike against the Tim Apple fans that going to Apple Silicon will result in more frequent and consistent Mac release schedules.

The M1 was a great chip. The M4 is an amazing chip. Why do we need a new number every year? Oh.... Publicity? Whatever. My M1 and M4 are both rocking.
My best guess is that, since they come up with a new iPhone chip every year, the M series would also fall in that line. Every 1.5 years didn't seem to align with the annual improvements of the A series.

Every other year is somewhat problematic as it would seem that people buying in year two are getting less of a bargain. However, if they simply dropped the prices in year two by $100, that might alleviate that concern.

I am afraid that by the time they release a MacBook with 5G, others are already using 6G or 7G.

God forbid Apple actually introduce TWO new features at once! I mean, what kind of rocket science would it take to put an M5 chip AND an OLED display in the same model year? Typical Apple.
So you’re counting the processor as a new feature?
The reason it seems unlikely they would release an OLED display with the M5 is because all of the rumors suggest OLED won’t release until the M6.

Are you suggesting they shouldn’t release an M5 or M6?
I’m in the market for a new MacBook next year. If they don’t upgrade the processors, I’m not buying one.

Alternatively, Apple could debut the M5 MacBook Pro in early 2026 and the OLED version in late 2026, but that would be unusual.
Apple did exactly this in 2023 when it debuted the M2 MBPs in January and the M3 models in October. And during the Intel era it became somewhat common to have early and late year models of a given machine.

Oh good, now I'm not worried about the fact that I just received my M4 Pro MBP today. Decided to go for it a couple days ago since there are deals and I'm starting a new project and my M2 MBA is exactly 3 years old.

I was looking forward to the M5 MacBook Pro later this year. Oh well. My M1 MacBook Pro is still going strong.

Really hope this is wrong.

Was waiting for the M5 to come out to finally upgrade. (Well, waiting for this Mac to hit the lowest age I usually feel like replacing - at least 5 years)

Hard to justify paying the current price for a year old model, that could be replaced tomorrow, or not.

Grumble.
I also hope this is wrong. I upgraded my MacBook Air 13" to the 15" M2 when it came out. and 6 months later they came out with a 15" MacBook Air with a M3. So wrong.

I just upgraded from a much older MBP to a used M2 Max, 96gb ram, 2tb for under $2k, a TON of folks aren’t reliant on the “fast available” and for that matter, unless your doing 8k, LLM, Scientific processing, the M series is a huge upgrade from anything windows/intel/amd can offer, so I’m suspecting that Tim skipped this round because why de-value the brand with a seriously unimpressive “it’s 20% faster” same old same old, Wall Street won’t be impressed especially with AI commanding so much attention. If Tim is smart, he’ll put all hands on deck for a new MAI chip, AI OS, OLED and release it in 2026… versus the “20% faster” (in specific situations but not really noticeable anywhere else, boring boring boring upgrade) oh and Tariffs would make it even pricer… so yeah, let’s hope it’s a skip and have a Real Improvements.
