So what is the early termination fee? Can someone paste an example if they actually leased a Mac?
I haven't been able to find a number or percentage so it looks like you need to actually commit to the lease to find out.
The FAQ at the bottom of this page explains in detail the early termination, buyout etc.

I haven't been able to find a number or percentage so it looks like you need to actually commit to the lease to find out.

Here's what's in my Klarna lease agreement for my M5 Ultra:
EARLY TERMINATION & EARLY TERMINATION FEE

This section describes early termination rights and the early termination fee.

You may terminate this Lease before the end of the initial lease term by notifying us via the Klarna App
or by other methods provided to you. If you terminate this Lease before the end of the initial lease term
or we terminate this Lease before the end of the initial lease term because of your default, you must: (i)
pay us the total of your unpaid monthly Lease Payments, including applicable taxes and fees, through the
end of the initial lease term (the “Early Termination Fee”); (ii) return the Leased Property within 14 days

as provided.

And from Apple Upgrade FAQs:
If you change your mind after you enroll in Apple Upgrade, you have 14 days after receiving your device to return your device back to us. After we receive your device, your lease will be cancelled.

After 14 days, you will have to pay an early termination fee to exit your lease. This fee is equal to the total of your unpaid monthly lease payments, including applicable taxes and fees, through the end of the initial lease term.

Additional disclosures if you default on a lease. Apple isn't going to disable your device.

Additional lease details (not the entirety) in regard to defaulting on a lease:
Purchase Option at End of Initial Lease Term. You will have an option to purchase the Leased Property
at the end of the initial lease term for a fee of $X,XXX.XX (tax exclusive).

Other Important Terms. See the full terms of the Lease Agreement for additional information on early
termination, purchase options for the Leased Property, your maintenance responsibilities, your rights,
warranties, and obligations under the Lease, late and default charges, insurance, and any security
interest, if applicable. You may be able to change your payment due date on the Klarna app subject to
qualification and availability.

Additional Disclosures
Official Lease Taxes: This estimated lease tax will be included in your monthly payment. For a detailed
breakdown of your monthly payment with Klarna (including any discounts or trade-in credits), see
Appendix B.

No Insurance Requirement: This Lease does not require you to obtain a service contract or insurance.
No Security Interest: This Lease does not include or create any security interest.

Trade-In Devices: Except as otherwise provided in the Lease Agreement, if you provide a trade-in device
that you own in connection with this Lease (your “Trade-In Device”), you authorize Apple to transfer any
trade-in credit associated with your Trade-In Device to Klarna and agree the value of your Trade-In Device
will be allocated and credited to your monthly payments for the initial lease term. Any applicable taxes
will be allocated and applied to your monthly payments for the initial lease term. If the value of your
Trade-In Device exceeds the total monthly payments for the initial lease term, you will receive an Apple
gift card via email for the excess value. In this instance, monthly payments due during the initial lease
term will consist solely of applicable taxes.

If the value of your Trade-In Device is determined to be lower than the estimated value at the time you
sign the Lease Agreement, you don’t provide your Trade-In Device within 14 days of receiving the Leased
Property, or your Trade-In Device is deemed to have no value, you may be charged for the difference
in value or for any credits applied to any monthly payments already paid, and your subsequent monthly
payments and any applicable taxes may change.

Purchase Option: You have an option to purchase the Leased Property before the end of the initial lease
term and during the Extension Period for the Purchase Option Fee (as described in the “Lease Options”
section of the Lease Agreement).

Early Termination and Default: If you terminate this Lease before the end of the initial lease term, you
may be subject to substantial charges. You will be obligated to pay up to all remaining unpaid monthly
payments, plus applicable taxes, return the Leased Property, and pay for any damage to the Leased
Property beyond reasonable wear and use allowed for in the Lease Agreement (or, alternatively, an
AppleCare service fee if you separately enrolled in an AppleCare plan for the Leased Property). If the
Lease is terminated before the end of the initial lease term in connection with an authorized return of the
Leased Property or other reasons permitted by the Lease, you may not be obligated to pay all remaining
monthly payments. We may terminate this Lease at any time in the event of your default. In such cases,
you will be responsible for all monthly payments, in addition to any other default remedy described in this
Agreement. See the “Lease Payments and Initial Lease Term” section of this Agreement for additional
information. You have no liability at early termination or at the end of the lease term for the difference
between the residual value of the Leased Property and its realized value.

Lost or Stolen Device: If your device is lost or stolen, you will be obligated to pay your monthly payments
through the initial lease term and the Extension Period, after which you will be charged the Purchase
Option Fee.

Standards for Wear and Use: When you are required to return the Leased Property, you must return the
Leased Property in good physical and operational condition, as described in the Lease and as reasonably
determined by Apple or its trade-in service providers, to avoid being charged damage fees.
Maintenance: You are responsible for maintaining the Leased Property such that it remains in good
physical and operational condition as described in the “Maintenance” section of the Agreement. Any
service performed on the Leased Property must be performed by Apple or an Apple Authorized Service
Provider.

Warranties: The Leased Property is subject to the Apple One (1) Year Limited Warranty as further
described in the “Warranties” section of this Agreement.

Late Payments: There are no late fees.

IF YOU DO NOT MEET YOUR OBLIGATIONS UNDER THE AGREEMENT, WE MAY EXERCISE OUR RIGHTS UNDER THE “DEFAULT AND REMEDIES” SECTION OF THE AGREEMENT.

LEASE PAYMENTS & INITIAL LEASE TERM

This section explains your payment obligations, the initial lease term, and events of default under this Lease.

Promise To Pay
You promise to make all of the payments owed under this Lease (including all fees, taxes, or any other
amounts owed) (each, a “Lease Payment”). The amounts shown in the Federal Consumer Leasing Act
Disclosures above are estimates based on information available as of the Signing Date.

Lease Payments
The initial payment for this Lease, which is due at lease signing, consists of your down payment (if any).
Your first monthly Lease Payment will be due one month after the Leased Property ships or is available
for pickup. Thereafter, your monthly Lease Payments will be due on the same day of the month (or the
last day of the month if any month does not have such day) in each subsequent month until termination
of this Lease.

You must provide a valid payment method during checkout when you enter into this Lease. This payment
method will be automatically associated with your user account (“Klarna User Account”) and all Lease

Payments will be charged to this payment method. You can change your payment method at any time in
the Klarna app (or by other methods provided to you). By entering into this Lease, you agree to Klarna’s
Recurring Payment Authorization Policy, which is attached to this Lease as Appendix A.

The taxes applicable to the Lease Payments may change if you change the billing address associated
with your payment method or the shipping address for the Leased Property or if tax rates or regulations
change. You may view the amount of your monthly Lease Payments at any time in the Klarna app (or by
other methods provided to you).

Initial Lease Term
This Lease has an initial term of 36 months, beginning the date the Leased Property is shipped or made
available for pick up. By the end of the initial lease term, if you do not exercise the Termination Option,
elect to purchase the Leased Property and pay the Purchase Option Fee, or Upgrade (if available), this
Lease automatically enters the Extension Period, as described in the “Lease Options” section of this
Agreement.

Default And Remedies
You will be in default under this Lease if:
• you fail to pay any Lease Payment when due;
• you give any false or misleading information in your Lease application;
• you lose possession of the Leased Property by confiscation, forfeiture, or other involuntary transfer
(whether or not the Leased Property is the subject of judicial or administrative proceedings);
• you assign, or attempt to assign, this Lease or transfer, or attempt to transfer, the Leased Property
without our prior written permission;
• you initiate a bankruptcy, receivership, or insolvency proceeding or one is initiated against you or your
property;
• you fail to return the Leased Property when this Lease requires;
• your use of the Leased Property violates applicable law;
• you are declared legally incompetent or you die; or
• you fail to meet any other obligation under this Lease.

If you are in default, after providing you any notice and waiting any time required by applicable law, we
may do any of the following:

• terminate this Lease and require you to return the Leased Property and pay the Early Termination Fee,
if applicable, as described below;
• take certain actions we believe are required to protect our interest in the Leased Property, subject to
applicable law;
• subject to certain exceptions, repossess the Leased Property;
• subject to certain exceptions, file a civil action against you; or
• pursue additional actions permitted by applicable law.

We will exercise our rights without breach of the peace, at reasonable times and places, in a reasonable
way, as permitted by applicable law. If we repossess the Leased Property, we will hold it free of any rights
you may have under this Lease and may delete any data on the Leased Property, subject to any right you
have under applicable law to cure the default or recover the Leased Property. You will pay our reasonable
expenses of taking these actions as permitted by applicable law, which may include expenses of taking
and storing the Leased Property. If we have to pay someone to help us collect any Lease Payments you
owe us, we will add the amount we have to pay to the amount you owe us, which may include reasonable
fees for attorneys who are not our salaried employees and court costs, unless prohibited by applicable

law.

If you default on this Lease, it may impact your ability to use or be approved for other Klarna services.

And returning a lease property:
RETURNING THE LEASED PROPERTY
This section describes how to return the Leased Property.

If you are required to return the Leased Property to us in connection with the early termination or
any other termination of this Lease, an Upgrade, Authorized Return, or as otherwise provided in this
Agreement, you must do so by returning the Leased Property to an Apple retail store in the U.S. or by
mailing the Leased Property in a return kit with a label provided by Apple, but only after backing up your
personal data, erasing all personal data, turning off “Find Devices” (“Find my iPhone” or the equivalent
for other device types) and following any other instructions provided. You may not use your own label to
mail the Leased Property to Apple.

Except as otherwise provided in this Agreement, your liability for monthly Lease Payments continues until
either: (i) Apple or its trade-in service providers inspect and accept the Leased Property that you return
to an Apple retail store in the U.S.; or (ii) Apple or its trade-in service providers inspect and accept the
Leased Property that you mailed in a return kit provided by Apple. If you opt to mail the Leased Property
in the return kit provided by Apple, you may be refunded by us for any monthly Lease Payments made
while the Leased Property is in transit.

If you are required to return the Leased Property under this Agreement, it must be returned in good
physical and operational condition, as determined solely by Apple or its trade-in service providers,
otherwise you may be required to pay for any damage to the Leased Property, including any damage due
to unauthorized repairs or installation of non-genuine Apple parts (“Damage Fees”). The Leased Property
will not be considered to be in good physical or operational condition if it has a damaged, scratched,
or cracked housing or display; display or touchscreen malfunctions; cracked camera lens; damaged
charger port; damage caused by exposure to liquid; corrosion or discoloration; damage to memory ports;
hardware or software alterations, including damage from unauthorized repairs (i.e., repairs performed by
anyone other than Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider) or installation of non-genuine Apple
parts; and any other malfunction, failure, or damage caused by misuse or mistreatment of the Leased
Property. If the Leased Property is not in good physical or operational condition when it is returned, you
are liable for any damages, including Damage Fees, which may be charged to the payment method(s)
associated with your Klarna User Account.

If you do not return the Leased Property as required by this Agreement, you will be liable for the Purchase
Option Fee, which may be charged to the payment method(s) associated with your Klarna User Account,
as described in this Agreement.

Amex Platinum is offering an additional 2500 point bonus for purchases >$5k, in addition to the standard points and they also provide a 2nd year of warranty coverage. I'm sticking with my up-front preorder CC payment.

I went through the application process and stopped at the adding CC for lease payment info. I noticed the same M5 max pre-order config had an estimated delivery of (Oct 1 - 8); sooner than my existing pre-order (Oct 6 – Oct 13) that I made not long after the announcement 😆

No. Thats I am saying, there is no framework to do it for MacOS that I am aware of. Like I said if you are airgapped how do you restrict it if the current framework if polling in the background?
Easy, if the device cannot verify after x number of tries / days then it defaults to lockdown mode.

My preorder is for store pickup on Oct 6 but I’m pretty sure most of these pre orders are going to be ready for pickup on release day, Sep 22nd.

I don’t know what framework they would need. If they wanted to do it they could use their activation servers to force a Klarna provisioning profile on to the Mac when you activate it.

Same mechanism they use for business and enterprise customers now. Profile is assigned by serial number when the Mac ships. Companies can have MacBooks drop shipped to employees and they automatically download the profile and provision on the companies device management platform of choice without an IT person ever touching it. It would probably be pretty trvial for Apple/Klarna to rig up this system to automatically lockdown the mac if x number of payments are missed.

Leasing is an option regardless of the price.

Considering how bad inflation is, it makes sense to pay as late as possible doesn't it? The money you part with now is probably going to be worth more now than if you part with some of it a year or so later.
Leasing ( or, buying and paying in instalments, which I’d chose over leasing ) does have that advantage.

The fundamental issue is that a purchaser has to sure that they will be able to manage their monthly outgoings for the full length of the lease / instalment plan.

That’s the worry in the current economy. Being locked in for 24 months while cost of living is rising faster than income.

So is renting an apartment vs. buying, doesn't mean its ideal. It seems in general (not pointing to anyone) that Apple folks are coming out of the wood work to laud apple for being courageous and innovative, lol.

Agreed. Or your job could be gone tomorrow. Personally I’m more of a cash buyer for peace of mind.

That is a good point, the uncertainty of life and being locked into a 50 to a 400 dollar a month lease. Also you'll be doubly worse off if you break the lease, between the penalty fees, and losing the computer. Now you paid a lot of money monthly and you have nothing to show for it

Exactly how I approach things. If I list my job next year and couldn’t get another, at least I have the option to sell my cars or Studio. But if you are tied into a lease you have nothing to sell.

Just pay off the remainder of the lease, buy the system for the residual, then sell it.

The issue that could raise its ugly head is that the person couldn't afford to buy it outright, ran into some financial difficulties and now cannot pay the monthly lease payment. They won't be able to pay off the remainder of the lease.

Also there may be extra penalties for breaking the lease mid term, and that just adds to the crunch. Looks like the fee to break the lease is pay off all of the remaining months. If you only owned the Studio for 6 months (out of a 36 month lease) and you cannot afford to pay the lease anymore - breaking the lease will mean you owe 30 months of payments at once.

Presumably the money that you would have spent buying the system would still be in the bank.

Yes, this is what I think Klarna will do - similar to how Apple enrolls corporate / enterprise customer devices into DEP and using a mobile device manager (MDM) for control.

Klarna lease contract says the device does NOT belong to you - but it belongs to the leasor (Klarna).

Will have to see if during activation, a provisioning profile will get installed, making it accessible / controllable / lock ability by their MDM.

Leasing isn’t for me. Never leased a car or tech. Never will.
I used to say the same, but I run my own business, and I finally gave in to my accountant's frustration at my attitude - for a small business in the country I'm based, I was screwing myself by buying outright rather than leasing or buying and paying in monthly instalments. :-(

Yes, that's correct and how leases work.

When I leased cars, it was structured the same way all leassors handle contracts.

Credit score usually gets hit if you break a lease.

And most likely since the device is owned by Klarna, it will end up getting locked / restricted (DEP / MDM profile activated).

For me, does not affect me as I retired and don't have to work anymore.

Well I understand for a business. But as someone who is unlikely at my time of life to ever run my own business I prefer to pay cash.
I know all the arguments for lease and invest the money. But for every one that that works out for, I reckon there is 2-3 it doesn’t.

I agree. As a person, not a business, I hate the idea of being debt in any way.

Same here, I have a small business which can afford the cash price buyout if I needed, but my CFA says why do that - when I can use someone else's money.

Plus it's a tax deduction for 3 years since it's a lease!

Fun fact. Never checked my credit score in my life.

Here we pay 20% tax at purchase (whatever way you buy it). No further tax after that.
