The way Apple are going, I’m not convinced they’ll be an M5 Ultra.
I was hyped and waited impatiently for an M4 Ultra and a new 32’ display but neither materialized.
I now no longer really listen to gossip and hype of what may be coming soon as it generally means disappointment.

But the word pre-M4 was always saying there might not be an Ultra. With the M5 it seems all signs have consistently been pointing to it launching mid-year. I’d say the “gossip” has been pretty on point, and I’d be confident it’s coming unless something went really unexpectedly wrong.

In fact, I’d expect it to be the featured element of the new Studio’s presentation - since otherwise it’s just a spec bump that doesn’t require a special introduction.

In the UK the Studio bumped from £2000 (M1 Max) and £4000 (M1 Ultra) to £2100 (M2 and M4 Max) and £4200 (M3 Ultra base, without the extra cores).

I do expect it to bump up a bit in price, personally. I wouldn't be surprised to see ££4400 or 4500 for the 'base' Ultra.

Nah you'll get an M5 Ultra in WWDC in June. It's pretty obvious.

There have been disappointments for sure - like sticking obsolete chip technology into the 2025 Studio. I'm definitely hoping for the M5 Ultra in the Mac Studio and that it'll see a release this year, but there's no way to know reliably. Lately MacRumors articles have been claiming the next Mac Studio will have an M4 or M5 Ultra.

There are some people out there claiming that Apple couldn't possibly pull the rug out from under potential Ultra buyers again by putting an M4 Ultra in a theoretical 2026 Mac Studio, because the M4 Max lacks the necessary interconnect. However, plenty of people were saying the exact same thing about the M3 Max and its lack of the UltraFusion interconnect:

So saying the M4 Max doesn't have an interconnect and therefore couldn't be made into an Ultra doesn't hold a lot of water without more proof than "no interconnect." The M3 Max didn't have one either, and yet there is an Ultra version.

Like I said, I'm still holding out hope for an M5 Ultra at WWDC, but am also prepared for the possibility of Apple disappointing again.

It absolutely won't have a M4 Ultra because the interconnects couldn't scale which is why the Mac Studio got the M3 Ultra the last time around. It wasn't that it didn't have interconnects. Also, the M3 had interconnects but didn't have the same scaling issues as the M4.

EDU discounts are only 5-10%. There's no such thing as a 20% EDU discount.
The best discount method is be a veteran. you can go to the veteran store and then go to refurbished the m4 studio base is about 1530 which is down from 2000 so it is around 23.5% off.

you can then use your Apple Store balance to buy it. the trick here is fill the balance with gift cards you buy with credit card points another 10% off so 1530 in balance cost you 1377. Lastly if you live in Delaware pick it up at the Apple Store in the Christiana Mall no sales tax. So 1337 for a 2000 dollar pc .

I know its a bad thing to ask but how do you get veteran discounts without being one 👀

If Apple was going to stick an M4 Ultra in the Mac Studio, I think they would have launched it with the MacBook Pros since the Mac Pro is dead so no reason to hold off to WWDC.

The only reason I see them waiting to WWDC to launch it (or at least announce it) is that current TSMC production is fully consumed with the M5 Pro and M5 Max so they need to wait a bit to announce Ultra until they have enough to perform an initial fill of the channel. We also do not know what an Ultra will be since the new architecture does not require Apple to continue combining two Max SoCs using UltraFusion (though it may remain the optimal way to do so).

Apple could also be struggling to secure sufficient stock of high-density DRAM modules to ensure that the M5 Ultra Studio has a 512GB RAM option (or even higher) at launch.

Veteran discounts on new products is 10%. Apple uses id.me to verify veterans status. You can also buy Apple products tax free through the Base Exchanges.

you find out a friend or relative that is a veteran and buy through them. Note this is not an offer for me to buy one for anyone.

I got my base m4 studio with a single mod 2tb. i used veteran and did not wait for a refurbished. I did veteran and apple balance filled with my cc points. so I got 2500 to 2250 to 2020 and i paid sales tax. as i do not live in delaware

I'd be shocked if it didn't go up. I was going to buy another M2 drive, the exact same as I bought last year for approx £440. That drive is now over £1200 🙁 Then there's the RAM issues...

I got kinda lucky. I bought a stupid amount of M2 SSD storage last year on sale. Not because I needed it right away, but because I'll use it eventually and it was an excellent price. The same amount today would be ridiculous. Maybe I should consider reselling what I'm not going to use in the near future, and call my purchase last year an "investment." 😆

BTW, those in the US wanting to purchase M2 drives at a discount, Best Buy has been selling the WD - BLACK SN850P 2TB Internal SSD PCIe Gen 4 x4 with Heatsink for PS5 for $299 for a few months already. I got 2 about 1 month ago and I'm using one inside the M2 slot of my Satechi Thunderbolt 5 CubeDock and getting the advertised speeds with my MacBook Pro M5 Pro.
