M6 MacBook Pro Expected This Year With Apple's First 2nm Chip

I recently came across a lightly used 16-inch MacBook Pro with an M5 Max, 36GB of RAM, and a 2TB SSD (the base M5 Max configuration) for around USD 2,800. A new one now costs almost twice as much. I was tempted to buy it, but for what I do, my M1 Pro is still more than capable. With prices having increased so much, I imagine many people will end up buying used high-end models—or even new old-stock units at the previous pricing—with far more performance than they’ll ever actually need.

There have been rumors about an M6 MacBook “Ultra” with touch screen and OLED screen for ages. Are they now saying it’s gonna ship with a base CPU or pushed to the M7 series?
 
Before the bubble I was more excited for the very early rumors of the M6 as a jump much bigger from the M5, than the M5 was from the M4. Not just for speeds or memory bandwidth, but also because it was expected to be more power efficient. But all of this is now going to be out of reach for me for quite a while.
 
Apple lineup should be simplified, like it used to be under Jobs. 3 models is the max: good, better, best.

And components should be upgradable/replaceble so the lifetime of purchases increases. Not to forget: the OS and tons of helper apps apple is loading on the machines should be restrained. We already have a microsoft, no need for another.

Your MBA might have a problem, then, if it «rainbow wheels doing anything» . You should call Apple for a check
 
The M6 will be an unexciting upgrade and I would hold off if I have an M2 or M3 for the M7 which should bring more substantial gains. Of course, if you have an M4, M5 ir are simply a light user, you are fine for years to come.

Glad i bought an M4 Pro in 2024 and a 17 Pro in 2025. And both on AppleCare

Was gonna update my iPad but thats no longer happening.

Won't be buying anything Apple for a good while.

the current keyboard is the show stopper. it’s not solid.
even with 1k rebate i don’t wanna have a new m5-max.
why did apple change a perfectly designed macbook keyboard anyways ?

i wait until the old keyboard is back!

I mean I have the same machine and I'm doing heavy AI dev curtesy of Devin and apart from the fan running ALL. THE. TIME I manage ok. I'm a heavy VMWARE user so it has to be x64 for me on Mac.

Same. I'm so glad I bought my late 2023 M3 Max with 64GB of memory to future proof it. And people always tell me you can't future proof! HAH. I was already planning for a 2029 upgrade at the earliest, but with a battery swap I could probably make it last until the early 2030s. Surely the AI bubble will have popped well before then! I'm still crossing my fingers for a 2026 collapse. PLEASE.

I would hope that unlike the M5 the statement "The chip will have higher memory bandwidth at approximately 200GB/s (up from 153GB/s in the M5)" doesn't just refer to an uplift in the number of cores.

It seems a pretty odd metric to say the M5 has higher memory bandwidth because it had more cores.
