M6 MacBook Pro Expected This Year With Apple's First 2nm Chip

I recently came across a lightly used 16-inch MacBook Pro with an M5 Max, 36GB of RAM, and a 2TB SSD (the base M5 Max configuration) for around USD 2,800. A new one now costs almost twice as much. I was tempted to buy it, but for what I do, my M1 Pro is still more than capable. With prices having increased so much, I imagine many people will end up buying used high-end models—or even new old-stock units at the previous pricing—with far more performance than they’ll ever actually need.

As much as I might like a new one, my 16" M1 Pro is more than capable for my current needs.

If there was a guarantee that the prices are going to stay like they are, I’d cancel my order of the M5 MacBook Air (purchased before the price increase) and wait for the M6, even if that meant paying an extra $200. But given the situation, prices could go even higher and I should settle with a smaller storage and less RAM. So I’m keeping the M5 1TB/32GB MBA.

Its not going to be obsolete, we're not talking about Apple watches here which apparently now have a 3 year lifespan. Apple is just going down the cell phone route, where there really isn't any difference between each gen.

I bet the AI accelerators in each GPU core will be improved a lot. These things are about to go wild in the “built for AI” race

Memory bandwidth will still need to increase >1TB/s to match high-end consumer graphics cards.

The M6 will be an unexciting upgrade and I would hold off if I have an M2 or M3 for the M7 which should bring more substantial gains. Of course, if you have an M4, M5 ir are simply a light user, you are fine for years to come.

The MacStudio will get M5 max a year after the MBP and at inflated prices. Then at least another year, maybe even 2, to get an M7 max.

Huh? Does this mean the rumored 2026 14”/16” OLED MacBook Pros are getting carryover M5 chips, will only be available with base M6 chips to start, or that they’re delayed into 2027?

It would not surprise me if the MBP Ultra or whatever its called will get the M6 and everything else stays at M5 for another year.

If it wasn't for yesterday's price hikes I'd be kicking myself right now for buying a top spec MacBook Pro 6 weeks ago.

Instead I can take comfort knowing that I got mine for £2,000 less than the current pricing, even if it is soon to be last gen.

Definitely referring to the Intel machine. The MBA runs my 5k UltraFine Display and everything that I use open at 88-95° CPU temp. Its incredible.

MacBook M1 Max still holds pretty well. I guess I'll join wait and see group 🙂 Wanted to buy 16' M5 Max 64GB 2TB, for 5249€, now it is 6304€..well, Apple needs to make M6 pretty good otherwise sales are not going to be great.

It’s not OLED MBP, it’s MacBook Ultra. The MBU will be like bringing the iPhone Air philosophy to the MacBook form: engineered with premium materials and features to provide the best ultra portable Mac experience for the wealthy buyer who wants to spend their money on the surrounding case case design and components instead of a Max chip.

My experience began in the early 90s with a low-end PowerBook. It had a nifty ball instead of a pad. In today's inflation adjusted dollars the price was over $5,000. (Interestingly, even then we already hated the Apple spradsheet/document/mail products). The adjusted price of first MacBook Pro in 2006 started over $3,000, and 2016 ~$1,900. My all-time favorite was a 2016 11-inch MacBook that cost about $1,200 in today's dollars.

I do not understand the "Neural Engine for AI processing." Current Macs, from the Neo to M5 base chip have a neural engine and it doesn't seem to do anything. I've tried running a lot of Siri AI stuff on the beta while running MX Power Gadget, and I can't get the ANE to budge, let alone spike. Most things seem to use a combination of performance and graphics cores.

That's what I was thinking when this article was first published, but now Gurman is claiming the Ultra/OLED will just get the M5-series Pro and Max chips to start.
