I'm sure this has been asked/answered, but help me out..will the Mac App Store recognize apps we've already download (free & or purchased), and keep track of their updates as well? Or only knew ones we acquire through the Mac App Store?

It has been discussed before and, from memory, the opinion seemed to be very much that existing apps will not be included.

This is another opportunity for developers though.

Say you have been selling an App by other methods. Make a few minor changes to it and get it into the App store. Email all your existing customers telling them that it is now there, that there are improvements, and that buying it from the App store means that you will bring it into line with all your other App Store purchases, as well as possibly getting more regular updates.

I bet quite a few people would bite.

Thanks. I'm sure it'd been brought up, but read through the thread and didn't see it mentioned. That's unfortunate..

Still though, I'm intrigued and excited to see what this will bring.

I am assuming that this will be a download via Software Update or through apple's website. If so (and you don't like the idea of "closing" Mac OS X) then here is my simple one-step solution:

DON'T INSTALL IT!!

I for one like the idea of the MAS and will download it!

The App Store does nothing to "close down" OS X. You'll still be able to run any software you like. Some apps won't be made available on the Store but you'll be able to download and install them exactly the way you do right now.

I don't know if this has been posted before but with the mac app store arrving on the 6th and the last day of the '12 days of christmas' promotion ending on the 6th, I think the last or maybe an extra 'present' will be a free app for the 12 days of christmas.

It would quickly encourage wide spread uptake for the app store and get people used to downloading apps. The ios 12 days of christmas also gets people who wouldn't usually download games and stuff from itunes to their devices, to do it because it's free but then they're more likely to download again.

Alternatively, the developers can always do the minor changes, update their applications in regular distribution channels (like CNET) then email existing customers. The difference? The developer keeps 30% cut that Apple wants.

No, they don't keep the 30%. They may keep some percentage of that 30%. Or it may cost them more than 30% based on their distribution channel.

I for one am excited about this. I am hoping once it is established Apple will loosen the rains a little like they have done with iOS store. Can't wait to see how it grows and what applications from other developers will be in the store!

Of course, they can, and they do.

There are more differences than that though.

The App store is new. There is a good chance that some customers will pick up on this update where they wouldn't under normal methods.

There are plenty of posts on this board and others from people who are wondering whether their existing Apps will auto update along with App store purchases. I suspect there are quite a few people who will bite if there are a few new features and they will move over to the App store.
