Your Mac is phoning home, which is perfectly fine since it is the property of Apple, not yours.
That's for SE-CU-RI-TY and your own good, and to save the planet while at it.
You should be grateful for this non-issue that is actually a feature. Just wait a bit longer and your app will start up. Apps never needed to start immediately in the first place.

Not sure why there are people on here saying "this screwed up my work." This is the first version of a very new OS. You should be waiting to install this on work machines after a few update points or when you read that it's safe to do so with the apps you need. And THEN install it when you have some free time and a buffer of having to re-install the prior OS if everything doesn't work correctly.
This was not limited to Big Sur, my friend.

Is this still happening? I could not get any online stuff to load (One Drive, Adobe, Dropbox). Also Big Sur update just throws an error 'Installation Failed while installing the selected upgrades". No help, nothing. Interestingly it shows it is trying to install 11.0.1. Now what?

I've added an entry for that domain on my DNS server to point it to one of my local webservers (so it still gets a quick response).

As far as I'm concerned, it can stay there until Apple publicly announce that this issue has been fixed in a future software update. It's absolutely unacceptable that this scenario wasn't tested, and that a failsafe timeout wasn't added.

Apple shouldn't have this much control over my computer.

I am still on Catalina and that is where I am having the issues (on 4 different machines). Cannot get Big Sur onto the Air which I designated as a test for Big Sur. It refuses to download and install.

This is just part of the plan to fold the Mac into their walled garden.

SOLUTION FOR THIS PROBLEM...?I need my Mac asap cause I need to work...HELP ME... THANKS!!!!

Even if the problem was only happening to people who upgraded to big sur (it's happening with everyone), this first version of a new OS has been beta tested for months. I'm pretty sure people can complain when an official version of a software is released...or really, whenever they want to. I complain all the time, and I love it.

Anyway, the general public is not supposed to be beta testing software, and even this site loves to mention how much and how quickly users adopt new versions of Apple's software. Maybe Apple should be waiting before releasing buggy software, but again, this is not just for big sur users. I imagine that this related to its release though.

The problem apps are hung awaiting an iCloud service, simple as that. Even when everything is running right for Apple, if you shutdown your Mac with all your normal apps open (Cal, Notes, Mail, etc.) and you're connected to iCloud, then restart the Mac without an Internet connection, you'll experience exactly the same thing. Just saying that sooo many apps depend on an external server connection when they start up, so if it ain't there, it's a ugly deal.

Yes disabling internet works but how long will that work? If you adjust the clock ahead a year will apps work anymore? I suppose you could right click and open them.

This is beyond ridiculous.
Time lost troubleshooting what should be a non issue. That Apple services makes Apple apps slow, sure, but other applications not starting (I mean, I could barely start the terminal after 5 minutes) because of a Mac phoning home issue, this is just ridiculous.

Your Air is one smart machine.

Apple are very quick to brag about their achievements. How about Tim Cook sends us an open letter apologizing for what happened today and taking some responsibility for a change?

Thanks for posting this! Since this morning I restarted few times, trying to understand what was wrong with my computer. Then I noticed the difference having internet on or off. I thought I had a virus or something malicious using my computer...no just Apple ! How come that without active navigation or other internet activities, Apple can slow down apps that don’t use internet?! When I say “slowing down” I mean 10 minutes to launch an app or to close a window.
I WASNT downloading Big Sur , I wasn’t downloading anything, I was working with my computer!
