Even if the problem was only happening to people who upgraded to big sur (it's happening with everyone), this first version of a new OS has been beta tested for months. I'm pretty sure people can complain when an official version of a software is released...or really, whenever they want to. I complain all the time, and I love it.

Anyway, the general public is not supposed to be beta testing software, and even this site loves to mention how much and how quickly users adopt new versions of Apple's software. Maybe Apple should be waiting before releasing buggy software, but again, this is not just for big sur users. I imagine that this related to its release though.
Yeah, sorry I thought this was just Big Sur so my bad. (I thought people were updating an OS in the middle of their work day and getting screwed, which is not great practice haha)

If people were actually concerned about a loss of productivity, they wouldn't have tried installing Big Sur in the first place. I only tried because I have two MBPs.

FWIW, I'm still seeing an error message and going to retry later this evening when there's less traffic/demand.
The issue affected those who never tried to update the OS today.

You don't know what you are talking about. This issue has nothing to do with Big Sur. Affects Catalina and prior OSes. This is explained upthread.

This is ridiculous. I have work to do and my machine is useless. I nearly reinstalled the entire OS from backup because I couldn't figure out what was wrong.
Yeah! Same here, had no clue what was going on... I would get a weird freeze every minute when using any active app, decided to start force quitting a few applications.

Now, here’s the catch, restarting with “open all open apps on restart” checked would basically leave with a french OS re-launch where nothing would happen, the menu bar which I have packed with apps, the several dozens apps that were open before, the whole system would just go to a crawl... eh boy did I panic, was already lifting the phone to start troubleshooting my “faulty or maybe overheated cpu” with Apple care support or something.

yes but it's very important to undo this when things are stable again. hopefully apple will correct this failure to be more graceful in a future update.
Yes, at least a notification of the system status and to decide if to open at your own risk or something... I really though it was something in the system gone awry. It would freeze half for a few seconds every so often.
I had no clue this phoning home thing was a feature... kinda don’t like it, makes me feel like the system works only if the whole Apple itself is up and running, too much tethering dependance.

This is the stupidest thing i've ever read. My apps don't need to start immediately? Firefox was taking 2 minutes to load. I thought my SSD was failing and proceeded to spend the next hour on diagnosing an issue that didn't exist on my end. I don't need apple to phone home every time I run an app. I am perfectly capable of downloading legit applications.
This is indeed key... I too thought my iMac just broke, I thought at first it was Time Machine backing up to the Time Capsule via wifi (I know, savage, bear with me), guess what, turned off wifi and it did fix it, then stopped the backup and turned on wifi back. Same issues, panic starts, what could it be? CPU throttling? Faulty ram stick? SSD failure?

Next time a system status of what’s happening server side would be nice. It would also be great to not be so tethered to any Apple server, let alone for launching a single app.

OCSP or Online Certificate Status Protocol is a method used by X509 certificates to validate expiry or cancellation - think of it as the modern version of a certificate revocation list. A browser would contact the ocsp provider to verify if the certificate issued remains valid using its uid. Now its possible that Apple built a mechanism that performs this action for signed applications and this platform (ocsp) is suffering an outage. As a result, there's no response or an invalid one that's being returned. This may result in a requery and therefore people are seeing things hang or fail.
There are 2 potential issues at play here - 1) there is an invalid response due to failure or 2) apple is under attack at ocsp.apple.com

Since certificates are in play in all of Apples application services, there's a possibility something significant has failed (given the new release of Big Sur) and this is now hitting other services (like apple pay etc)...

Just a hypothesis...
Or... 3. Apple upgraded their servers to Big Sur 😛

It's been more than 10 years I have been using macos , I recommended macs to everyone when we chat about computers etc and I have never been more embarrassed in my life about my choice and recommendation to others.

So what if there are serious outage more often or let's say something happen and Apple loses all their backup servers because of something serious, do we have to be unable to use our computers? What kind of amateur logic is that by top notch software engineers? How is that possible they didn't see that coming. Shame.

Because nobody is looking at the system overall.

Why do you say it is important to undo?

why should apple (and anyone monitoring my network traffic) get a log of every app opened on my computer?

do whatever you want, just don't come here bitching when you get hit by ransomware

Why is it "very important" to change back once the servers are up again? If Apple at some point decides to blacklist users with a custom hosts-file, it means it's time to jump ship and move on to e.g. Linux. It really is that simple.

They also can't deny those without an internet connection to use installed software, that'd be the end of Apple's general computing division. This is even if you disregard personal freedom: some work at remote field sites, others need to follow strict security protocols.

And if I'm not using a Mac - one Apple device less, many of the conveniences with their inter-device connected services gradually go away. These services work as an incentive to make our next "connected device" purchase an Apple one, which is what it's all about for Apple these days.

What an absolute joke all of this is. It looks like the issue got resolved for me quicker than it did for others, though. Maybe before 10pm GMT, everything was working as normal again. Why do all apps need to have a health check over the internet before opening? This is ridiculous.

I’m on Catalina due to buying an MBP a few months ago, otherwise I’d have still been rocking Sierra on my MBA. I’m one of those people that does really bother upgrading iOS. I was happily using Lion on my MBA for years. I tend not to need or be excited about fancy new features, so have no need to update to Big Sur anytime soon.

Just install Lulu and block trustd, problem solved and it means apple cant spy ahem I mean check on every app you launch and at what time

Server side issue with gatekeeper.

Scary. shows how Big Brother can stop you from using your favorite apps

The OS is becoming more and more thin client. relying on remote server communication to function.

Not 'to function' so much as to check for malicious content. The apps were doing their usual notarization scans to check for malicious content by way of trustd contacting oscp.apple.com; but something happened to make oscp.apple.com unreachable. If an app can't reach oscp.apple.com the Mac is thought to be offline, so the process would soft fail (and the problem disappeared people went offline). But yesterday the OS knew the machines were online yet still found oscp.apple.com unreachable; thus the slowdowns. But they would all time out the attempt and work eventually. That timeout was the whole thing. Offline stapling would improve things. The event was unfortunate but it should be seen against the background of a framework of processes which try to keep your Mac secure.

Did someone on Mojave also have this happen?
I have.

When this happened, I was running two computers both on Mojave (yes, Catalina had poor success with me...). One had the issue, the other one not. Based on this, I was really suspecting something wrong with the machine. An Apple Server issue would have been the last thing to come to my mind...

As I type this problem still hasn’t been fixed. Had a problem with a slow app, checked the Console and OCSP is still failing. Disingenuous of Apple not to log it in their status pages.

I wonder who is going to get fired?

PSA to developers: Notarization alone is not enough. You'll need to staple your notarization results as well. That way your user's mac won't need to go online to validate your app for signs of tampering.

How? Have a look here.
They should hire you at Apple, instantly! They need people with a brain!
