So funny that "open-minded progressives" are so close-minded to "conservatives" ;)
Nah. the "open minded progressives" built the platform.

Now it's cool, even dreck like Carl Rove use it because it "just works."

Better integration with Time Machine

I'd like to see better integration of iDisk with Time Machine so that local copies (automatically synced copies) of iDisk get backed up in such a way that you can go back and restore individual files from different points in time, just as you would with other files backed up by TM. As it is now, the "local copy" of your iDisk is a sparsebundle file in username/library/FileSync. If you choose to include this in your Time Machine backups, it simply backs up the entire thing. If you want to pluck a file out of it, I suppose you have to restore the entire thing, then mount it, then . . . well, something like that.

I'm a .Mac user for over 8 years now  and (no joke) I would like:

  • the sync service to actually sync reliably and consistently (like for more than just a few times in a row)
  • my computers to stop randomly disappearing from the list for no reason
  • to be able to sync my music through the service instead of using dozens of crappy quasi-legal shareware apps to "steal" my own music for use on a different computer.
  • "back to my mac" to work reliably (or at all in some cases)
  • the interface on the sync services to make sense in some way that is intelligible by human observers.
  • a way to use the web feature without using iWeb (which is almost unusable unless you are a grandmother or a small child.)

PS - I know that the last one is *possible* it's just unreasonably difficult and confusing (like most of .Mac)

:)

Amen to that!

And I would like to add, for iDisk to work as flawlessly and fast on my computer, other Macs, and other PCs, as www.box.net does.

I hope that it includes some basic changes to iCal. Such as allowing others who are subscribed to your published calendar (with your permission) to edit your calendar. So that your wife, or family member or secretary could update, edit and add to your calendar. It seems to me that this would be a welcome addition and easy change, especially if you are a .mac family or small business.

Oh... and one other thing to Virgil... Great idea on some type of social network within .Mac, but just remember, owning a mac does not necessarily a progressive make. You'd be surprised at the number of conservatives who also enjoy Macintosh.

1. over my dead body would someone else edit my calendar. When I say no, I mean no. Nobody's booking nada into my precious empty spaces!

2. i would not be surprised at anything a conservative enjoys. I would be fairly surprised to hear one get up and actually cop to enjoying anything. maybe the conservatives I know are just especially dour dudes

3 I like dotMac primarily for the iDisk and just for the few odd things I like to be able to reach from any of my books, plus the occasional lazy shove of some purchased iTunes track onto iDisk for awhile instead of backing it up "properly" here on planet earth. I do that sometimes when I buy something onto a laptop when I'm away from home. I tried to use bookmarks sync during a time when the process was apparently a little buggy. As a result I am a little leery of automatic sync using dotMac. Suppose I should give it another trial sometime. I'd probably still be doing individual backups though out of distrust... so it feels like extra work for no particular benefit?

You can do this already, though you can't force the changes.

I would also like to add:

Changing the main email address. The login I sign up for can't be changed, EVER, unless I get rid of .Mac (loosing all info and uploaded files/web pages/etc in the process) and sign up for it again. Can I change my main email address and have all of Apple's info update.

I'd love to see the over-the-air syncing (from and to iPhone) for calendars and contact info, not just email. It would make my life so much easier - only having to physically sync when I want to change music/movies. Periodically charging in my car and office keeps me free from docking for days, but my calendars get too out of sync.

Plus, I sync my iPhone with my desktop. But when I'm out of town with my laptop, I can't sync without screwing up all the data on the iPhone. Over-the-air sync or maybe even some kind of network sync via Back To My Mac would make things so much more convenient.

Push mail for .Mac accounts would also be super.

I hope they give us a few extra items, I have had .mac for awhile and never get much use out of the $70 yearly fee, hopefully if they upgrade it I won't mind paying for next year and will renew.

I see someone else always buys it from Amazon...

Back to my mac...

God forbid they get around to getting Back To My Mac to work.

Sounds like a great idea though. I love .Mac, when it works.

works just fine for me. Wasn't quite right with first release of 10.5, but as soon as 10.5.1 came down a couple of weeks later, it was fine and has continued to be fine since that time.

Social networking is the biggest web-related story in the last five years, but Apple is doing absolutely nothing in this area. I'd rather hook up with people on .Mac than get on FaceBook and have every old high-school idiot I ever knew try to "friend" me. I have nothing in common with those people.

Probably this hasn't occurred to them because "the Steve" is such an antisocial loner to begin with. :p

Not to get off track but I guess I'm antisocial as well (or I can blame it on being a generational thing--I'm an ol' geezer) but I don't "get" the whole FaceBook/MySpace etc phenomenon at all--like you pointed out, why would I want to have "friends" on FaceBook/MySpace I'd likely not even talk to in real life? The concept seems totally contrived and artifical to me. And let's say I do have one of these pages and have "friends" on it then what????????Do we meet up at the mall and hang out????? Do I then have a blog about our "adventures" at the mall? And finally, IMO it's nuts the whole "you don't exist" in the social landscape if you don't have some totally pimped out [gauche!] web page with all your BS on it. My take on them (IMHO):

1) How incredibly self-absorbed
2) Does anyone REALLY care about the cr*ap on my web page?
3) As a rule, they're usually very loud and UG-LEE (as in CHEESY!)
4) Many of these web pages are like empty cans--they make a lot of noise while having no depth...
4) See Number 1.

I just don't understand..... :D

As you suggested, if the connection were .mac or something else (a forum specific to something in common [for example, wedding photographers, Cube owners etc etc]) then these types of things would make a LOT more sense to me....

Like many things. Social Networking at it's worst is tragic but at it's best it is a powerful paradigm.

Take Myspace. Sure you can have a bunch of "strangers" asking to be your friend but you can also have true famly and friends keeping in touch. You can also be kept in touch with your favorite music groups, filmmakers etc.

Everytime I login to Myspace I think. Apple could have something like this whipped up in no time. The only problem is Myspace's play is advertising dollars and Apple is certainly not going there.

AppleSpace would be centered around Digital Lifestyle. Yes you'd be able to find friends and have forums and listen to music and watch videos but it would be less ambitious and certainly have more polish than Myspace. Media links would of course go back to iTunes but you would still be able to publish your music without being on iTunes.

You could easily sync your AppleSpace friends with your Addressbook on your Mac making for a nice web front end for Addressbook. You'd have a web version of iCal and there'd be embedded links which would allow you to iChat with other Mac users and chat with MSN/Yahoo IM clients.

The Apple TV would support AppleSpace as well you could embed Youtube video but from iMovie 9 and on you could edit your home video and upload them directly to your AppleSpace page.

Social Networking is what you put into it. At it's worst it's useless but at its best it's enriching to someones life.

I love .mac and wouldn't be without it, but have always thought that Apple are missing a great opportunity. If they halved the price and gave it some 'must have' features, the user base would likely quadruple.

I couldn't agree more.

.mac has allot of wasted potential by playing it a little overly safe.

Maybe the .mac relaunch coincides with the whole Game thing which may may .mac the Xboxlive of Macs and the iPhone.

Mainly, I have .mac for iDisk, but it really needs improving:

1) as others mentioned, the transfer speed really needs to be faster, particularly the uploads. Some of us really do use the 10 GB's of space, and not just for backups.

2) The Mac OS and iDisk still don't work right together, which makes no sense. The upload progress bar is 100% useless, and after dragging a file to upload, many times the Finder gives a spinning beach ball, rendering the computer basically frozen for as long as it takes to upload. If you decide to stop an upload, you have 2 choices after hitting "stop": a) wait for 20 minutes until it actually stops OR b) force a computer shut down by holding in the Mac's power button. Then, once you restart, you can't delete or upload a new version of the files, since it tells you that the "File is in use" for about another 20 minutes, until it decides that it isn't "in use" any more.

3) If you password protect a Homepage on .mac, you have to enter the password twice to get to it. This is a bug acknowledged by Apple, but never fixed. Even worse, the page never tells you to re-enter the password after the first entry, it just reloads the password page.

iDisk is a great tool, and it works just well enough for me to be able to use it for my business, but these issues are also just frustrating enough to make me think that I need to find a more professional option. I really hope that the issues are addressed soon as well.

By the way,"Back to my mac" is dead. Now that oil is so expensive, so is keeping your computer on all night long. Time to really fix iDisk, Apple!

At the moment, I am very satisfied with .Mac

I use it for my email (though I use the Mail Application), iDisk, and some other small things

If they want to expand it to chat with other .Mac members I would be all for it that but if not, so be it
