obsolescence is just lack of imagination.

The tech is, allegedly, available. Build one!

one g5 imac (with new guts due to recall/warranty work), one hinge and a way to protect the video cable when you mount the screen backwards, one really (REALLY) big ass laptop battery, and a keyboard hot-glued to the case....

presto. g5 laptop. with the burns and blisters to prove it. :apple:

Yes, as many have said: the POWER arch is far from dead. It is still being highly developed and used today in more than just the console game boxes.

The 970 chip by IBM is not dead; IBM sells workstations and servers outfitted with this chip. Just visit your local ibm.com. The latest revision of that 970 chip in fact has lots of virtulization power built in which makes it very popular in the server world.

And as someone mentioned that 'G5' chip is actually a POWER4 derivative:

The POWER6 chip needs a major cooling rig and takes a lot of power. So it is doubtful that it would end up in a quiet little home desktop machine. The Cell processor will probably make its way into home machines in the future, however, as it can fit in a small box.

My bad.

Sorry for all of the confusion. My original question for this thread, was based on when, of if Apple would be coming out with a completely new Mac Pro computer. I know I asked about a G6 thinking that was the next name (I obviously wasn't paying attention). The current line of Mac Pro computers has the same aesthetics as the Original G5 and I wanted to know if there was something new on the horizon. I also wanted to know if they would be updating the monitors from where they are now. Thanks for all of the replies!

mmmm...... G7.

It would be nice if the thing is not like the Cell, which has one core for the OS and seven for SIMD; if it is not like the Cell (i.e., completely serial), I will drool.

It's late, and I feel sorry for being part of the revival.

Also, pretty sure the G6 and G7 are IBM.
