All those things stil not workin!!
HI, i hv the latest macbookpro and both the msn messengr, adium and evn ichat are not workin!!! its ages i haven been using msn msgr....can u plz tell another solution...plzzzzzzz

Thank you in adv:)

For the past couple of days I've been getting the same error! Any ideas?

It's a pile of rubbish program. Unless A/V is needed, use alternative software such as Adium.

I personally use iChat with MSN.

Had the same problem today. Solved it by:
Deleting All preferences are located in your ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft folder.

So I deleted following file "Microsoft Messenger User Cache.plist" and its working now.

Since this thread is the top result on google when searching the problem I'll share the solution that works for me.

"you may not be connected to the internet msn messenger" "msn messenger won't get past sign is" "msn messenger stuck at sign in"

most likely problem, the browsers proxy settings:

set safari as the default browser:

open safari>safari>preferences>general>default web browser>safari

Last step:
disable proxies

safari>preferences>advanced>(proxy)change settings>proxies>uncheck any checked boxes

MSN is always kind of choppy and has lots of issues but this one is generally related to the browsers proxies being up. If this doesn't work check to see if you have tor, privoxy or any other third party proxy system installed, turn them off while using messenger.

btw people i reinstalled mac osx new and office for mac new and this problem came up again and i followed to the letter above.. and uncheck EVERYTHING on that page not only proxies but ANY checked boxes on that page.. and i turned mac on.... TA DA.... works like charm and now U can change back your default browser to whatever. :) Thanks for the fix.... I hope more people read this.

Mac Messenger wont sign in

I too will share my result as when I searched this was the post that came up. I could sign into Messenger with my email address no problem, but my son couldn't with his.

I followed some instructions.... reset his password - didn't work. Turned off wireless modem for 30 seconds - didn't work.

Then after trying that I clicked on the 'clear account history' button on the sign in page, confirmed that I wanted to clear everything and that has worked....so far anyway!!!:)

Im pretty new to the Mac world, but the above worked for me.

Further to this, with some experimentation, it seems to be, if you select the option to save the conversations. I decided to try and select 'Save None' and I haven't had a problem since.

"you may not be connected to the internet msn messenger

Okay I GOT THIS!

You need to right click on the MSN Messenger icon and make sure you are signing in as personal not corporate. ( unless you have a corporate account)
That worked for me.

are you using MSN 8? I don't see anything about signing in with a personal account.

This program is crap, I'd use Adium but for some reason I always get spam messages from people not on my contact list when I us Adium.

same for me my msn didn t work since 2 month unchecked all on that page and now it works perfectly thank you guys

Try this, maybe.

May not help, but mine started working again after I deleted my saved keychain for it.
Try going to applications>utilities>Keychain Access and finding you msn email application password thing there and deleting it. Then go back to mac messenger...sign in and it should work. Lol, mine did anyway.

MSN messenger

i had the above problem and had solved it but now today it has started doing the same again.

have gone through all the above but still not working any ideas

Mac's s**k

Never had so many issues with a laptop since I got my MacBook Pro. PC's are better.
Why wont MSN messenger log in? Keeps saying that there are other locations logged in as soon as I log in and then it logs me back out. Have gone through everything and logged all out and even changed the password to my account to force the log outs on all machines and its still doing it...

Apple are good at 2 things. Advertising products and keeping out viruses, but thats only because theres nothing on them worth stuffing up more.
Granted theyre quick for their processor power, but they are so damn restrictive in all products. Privacy, licences, secrecy, copyrights, geezus!! over the top. Cant even recognise my phone is rooted. Can access my files, everythings got to be done through itunes which is not user friendly in any manner. Has a mind of its own moving apps around on my phone, saving files to where ever it feels like.

Just make it work properly!!! Let me do what I want with my data, my computer, my phone.

cannot still sign in

tried everything above..... but still wont work!
still says "Sign in msn messenger fail because you network is not available or you are not connected to the internet" when i know iam and that I can browse and do everything else including skype.
plz help!

and where exactly is the "clear account history" button???/ i don't see it anywhere.

worked for me as well...

...to clear account history. had problems logging in as everyone else here but that fixed it.

Figured I'd post my solution since it's not quite in here and this is the first hit on google... For anyone still having problems with an older version of msn messenger, I'll describe how I fixed mine and then quote a quick little scroll-through solution, so hopefully that can help people out.

Right now I'm using safari version 5.1.1 and msn messenger 7.0.2.

I've had his problem once before on my MacBook Pro (it might have been an earlier version of msn messenger, I can't remember), and I fixed it using a solution having to do with the proxy settings found in the msn messenger preferences. Originally I found this forum thread through google, and what ended up solving my problem was the 3rd suggestion from Larry Tan's post; I'll quote it here:

PAST SOLUTION:
3. Your computer's proxy settings may be incorrect. Proxy settings allow your computer to communicate with the Internet. Adjust your proxy settings by:

a. Sign out of MSN Messenger for Mac. If you are signed in automatically,
click "Cancel Sign in' on the "Network" menu.
b. Click "Preferences" on the MSN Messenger menu.
c. Click the "Connection" tab.
d. Select "SOCKS Version 4.0a" or "SOCKS Version 5.0" in the "Type" list.
e. Enter the server name and port. For SOCKS proxy, the port is typically
port 1080.

I followed these instructions and msn messenger started working again. (Port 1080 worked for me). I forget exactly when it happened, but eventually msn messenger screwed up again. I gave up on it for a long while, just today I screwed around with the settings enough to fix it. I followed the advice posted by bluboi and jdaniel (quoted below), but msn messenger still gave me the same message "Sign in to Microsoft Messenger failed because the service is not available or you may not be connected to the internet". Once I opened up and changed the msn preferences to select "Automatically configure using system network preferences", though, it worked!

I don't know how relevant this is with the newer version of msn messenger, but this is how I fixed it, hope it helps someone. Also, if you're still having problems, check that link that gave the first solution; it had a lot of suggestions on the page.

CURRENT SOLUTION:
...most likely problem, the browsers proxy settings:

set safari as the default browser:

open safari>safari>preferences>general>default web browser>safari

Last step:
disable proxies

safari>preferences>advanced>(proxy)change settings>proxies>uncheck any checked boxes

...
...uncheck EVERYTHING on that page not only proxies but ANY checked boxes on that page...
Check that your msn messenger preferences are consistent with your browser settings:
a. Click "Preferences" on the MSN Messenger menu.
b. Click the "Connection" tab.
c. Select "Automatically configure using system network preferences"

Top search for google still. I thought I'd add, none of above solutions are even relevant to me. I've never used any proxies, they were all off to begin with. Safari is always default browser. There is no peer guardian, software or hardware firewall in way. The router has msn ports wide open. I can connect via those same ports with amsn just fine, even video and file transfer work just fine. In fact ANY msn clone works, but official 8.0.1 just spits out "sign into microsoft messenger failed because the service is not responding" every time. Unfortunately, none of the clones support Lync, which is why i'm stuck with the official client. As much as i'd love to use only amsn and delete this pile of crapware, i'm stuck with it, when/if it works. Their support has been no help either. Granted it's a free product, but considering Lync is not free, and I am trying to use this free product to contact people using a commercial product, my issue should be relevant to them. I've tried convincing the amsn team lync is relevant to support but they had no interest either :(
