Since this thread is the top result on google when searching the problem I'll share the solution that works for me.
"you may not be connected to the internet msn messenger" "msn messenger won't get past sign is" "msn messenger stuck at sign in"
most likely problem, the browsers proxy settings:
set safari as the default browser:
open safari>safari>preferences>general>default web browser>safari
Last step:
disable proxies
safari>preferences>advanced>(proxy)change settings>proxies>uncheck any checked boxes
MSN is always kind of choppy and has lots of issues but this one is generally related to the browsers proxies being up. If this doesn't work check to see if you have tor, privoxy or any other third party proxy system installed, turn them off while using messenger.
Then after trying that I clicked on the 'clear account history' button on the sign in page, confirmed that I wanted to clear everything and that has worked....so far anyway!!!![]()
Im pretty new to the Mac world, but the above worked for me.
Okay I GOT THIS!
You need to right click on the MSN Messenger icon and make sure you are signing in as personal not corporate. ( unless you have a corporate account)
That worked for me.
Tom
btw people i reinstalled mac osx new and office for mac new and this problem came up again and i followed to the letter above.. and uncheck EVERYTHING on that page not only proxies but ANY checked boxes on that page.. and i turned mac on.... TA DA.... works like charm and now U can change back your default browser to whatever. Thanks for the fix.... I hope more people read this.
Had the same problem today. Solved it by:
Deleting All preferences are located in your ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft folder.
So I deleted following file "Microsoft Messenger User Cache.plist" and its working now.
and where exactly is the "clear account history" button???/ i don't see it anywhere.I too will share my result as when I searched this was the post that came up. I could sign into Messenger with my email address no problem, but my son couldn't with his.
I followed some instructions.... reset his password - didn't work. Turned off wireless modem for 30 seconds - didn't work.
Then after trying that I clicked on the 'clear account history' button on the sign in page, confirmed that I wanted to clear everything and that has worked....so far anyway!!!![]()
3. Your computer's proxy settings may be incorrect. Proxy settings allow your computer to communicate with the Internet. Adjust your proxy settings by:
a. Sign out of MSN Messenger for Mac. If you are signed in automatically,
click "Cancel Sign in' on the "Network" menu.
b. Click "Preferences" on the MSN Messenger menu.
c. Click the "Connection" tab.
d. Select "SOCKS Version 4.0a" or "SOCKS Version 5.0" in the "Type" list.
e. Enter the server name and port. For SOCKS proxy, the port is typically
port 1080.
