This is just 1 year of age difference we're talking about so that 3 years is very exaggerated.
You're comparing the mini to laptops, which is a fair comparison.

Actually three years ago, quad core machines were available with discrete graphics, which would outperform today's mini. So my earlier statement that the mini is comparable to the fastest of three years ago, is not really true. Nevertheless, today's mini is plenty powerful enough for most anything you throw at it, except games — unless you're the impatient type. :)

Purchase

I made my decision yesterday: I decided to pick up the 27" iMac. It's a bit of a stretch for me financially but I think it will suit me better in the long run.

Attached image shows the 27" iMac with my Dell 2408WFP attached for additional screen real estate.

Beautiful. It will definitely last longer and allow you to do a lot more. Nice computer..

I'd definitely go for 4GB ram though, I think it makes a big difference over 2GB, and will be more future-proof.

Too Late...

Ah well.. Enjoy your iMac I'm sure its fab.

But from my point of view the Mini is a fab little machine.
I ditched my PC in March and it is my new do everything I need it to work horse.

Web, Email, webpage writing, Online TV, Open office, and editing some fairly large (400MB) photoshop files for work.

It does all this admirably. I'm sure the iMac is a bit nippier, but if its e-mail/ web/you tube I dont think you will be gaining alot.

I used to do that stuff on my old dual 700 P3 PC with a whopping 10Gb hard drive , so the Mini takes it all in its stride without batting a megaflop.

Using a mac mini 2ghz with 4gb ram and 80gb x-25 intel ssd.

This thing is blazing fast. Everything launches in 1 sec. I'm a professional photographer and i even do all my photo editing on it. No problem.

Just make the switch to an SSD. trust me, it'll make your life so much better.

I paired it up with a 24 inch LED display.

Until the imac starts offering SSD options, this mac mini is staying with me. It's so small and silent. Love it.

The Nvidia 9400 is good enough for watching 1080p MKV files no problem.
