I've been using my MacBook Air M1 in clamshell mode at my office with a 27" LG external display with no issues. Just 2 days ago, I bought a Mac Mini M1 (new, from Apple) to use for this purpose instead, connected to the same display. The first thing I did was upgrade the Mini from macOS 12.1 to 12.2, so I'm not sure if this issue is related to 12.2 or not, since I didn't use the Mini with 12.1. The issue is that for 2 days in a row now, when I leave work, I press control + shift + eject to put the display to sleep like I always did with my MacBook Air. However, when I press a key on the keyboard the next morning to wake the display, I discover that the Mac Mini has rebooted and after I log in I get a message that the system restarted due to an error. Both times I've reported it to Apple, and I've also pasted the diagnostic details below in case any knowledgeable people here might be able to see something in it that would provide a clue.

Anyone else experiencing this issue?

Two other things worth mentioning:

1. I know of course I could simply power the display off instead, but putting it to sleep shouldn't result in a system crash - that bothers me. And that's also less secure because I have it set up to require the password immediately upon waking the display. That won't work if I simply power off the display using the display power button. It only happens when I sleep the display using the Mac command (which is causing the system to crash).

2. For some reason, my Apple wireless keyboard (model A1314 - the older one that uses 2 AA batteries) refused to connect to my Mac Mini during setup and I had to go out and buy a wired keyboard to be able to complete the Mini's setup. I tried everything to get it to work, including powering it on and off multiple times, pressing every key, etc. but all I ever got was the blinking green light. Once I completed setup using the wired keyboard, I was able to connect the wireless one using System Preferences > Bluetooth and haven't had any connection issues since (even after rebooting), but I'm wondering if the keyboard might be causing an issue. Seems unlikely, but I thought it's worth mentioning since it gave me trouble during setup.

Update: Apple Menu > Lock Screen also causes the system to crash ? Tried that when I left work today, and when I opened my remote access software (Splashtop) just now at home to access the Mini, it shows it's offline. I'm going to take my MBA to work on Tuesday since it's also updated to 12.2 and see if I can replicate the issue. By itself, the MBA doesn't crash when I sleep the display, but this might be related to an external monitor. Obviously I have no choice with the Mini but to use an external monitor.

I'm surprised this thread is getting absolutely no action. This is sort of a big deal. Here's a video of what it looks like every morning when I go to wake my Mac Mini M1 (macOS 12.2) after sleeping the display the previous evening (either using ctrl + shift + eject or by going to the Apple menu > Lock Screen, then pressing the esc key). Another strange thing is that it makes me log in twice when this happens:

A major issue with this is that I'm unable to remotely access my Mac Mini from home (the Mac Mini is at my office) because it restarts itself after I put the display to sleep. Simply turning off the display isn't a viable option because then my Mac is not password-protected (I have it set to immediately require password after screensaver after sleep or screensaver . . . and I don't use a screensaver so that's not a viable option either).

Update: I think I MAY have solved the problem for ME, but there's obviously still a bug. Under System Preferences > Energy Saver, there's an option named "Prevent your Mac from automatically sleeping when the display is off" that was not checked. I checked it, put the display to sleep for about 20 minutes or so, and then I was able to wake the display and enter my password without encountering a "Your computer was restarted because of a problem" error. If I'm still error free after a couple overnight tests, then I think the issue is solved. However, obviously the Mac shouldn't be crashing when the option I checked is off either. Sleeping the display or computer should not cause the Mac to crash and restart.

Sleep has never been consistent and rock solid on Macs since forever. On some machines it’s reliable and many others not.
If it works- count yourself lucky. If not- that’s fairly typical.
Unless proven otherwise, I wouldn’t use sleep on any Mac that needed to do work for me (vs casual stuff like email & surfing etc)

Well, I don't ever use Sleep mode on my desktop Macs (I put the display to sleep instead), but it HAS worked flawlessly on every MacBook I've owned, including my current M1 MBA, so it still doesn't make sense why it would be an issue for the Mini, running the same macOS (12.2). Unless closing the lid on a MacBook is not the same thing as selecting Sleep from the Apple menu? However, in this case, as indicated by my posts today, I didn't realize my Mini was going into Sleep mode (because I didn't realize I didn't have the setting checked to prevent that upon display sleep).

Well, unfortunately, although the problem seems less frequent, it's still happening ? With the "Prevent your Mac from automatically sleeping when the display is off", while the Mini doesn't crash consistently every time I put the display to sleep now, it will still crash every few times. I press a key on the keyboard to wake the display, and am greeted with two login screens in a row (I still don't get that part - why do I have to log in twice?) and then I see the message that my computer was restarted due to an error. I simply don't understand why this has not ONCE happened with my iMac running the exact same macOS version and the SAME apps, etc. are installed.

MacOS and iOS (and iPadOS) always have had and continue to have a long long list of bugs that never get fixed because this list is so long and nobody at Apple knows how to fix them without breaking something else.
It’s just the nature of today’s software due to their annual rushed upgrade cycle.
A better way to to “appreciate” Apple software is to be glad it sort of works at all.
To expect it to work perfectly is silly.

I don't think I'm being "silly" for expecting a brand new Mac Mini to NOT crash and burn every time I put the display to sleep ? That's a pretty major failure, not some nit-picky "perfectionist" expectation. And the fact that this has NEVER happened to my iMac, which I sleep the display on twice each day (before I go to work and before I go to bed), and it's running the exact same macOS version and the same apps are installed makes it all the more puzzling. Maybe it's an M1 thing (my iMac is a 27" Intel)?

As I mentioned in post 4, selecting System Preferences > Energy Saver > "Prevent your Mac from automatically sleeping when the display is off" seems to have helped, but the problem is still there, just less frequent. For example, the other day I accessed my Mac Mini from home (the Mini is at work) via Splashtop (remote access software) and everything was fine. About an hour later I went to access it again and it showed up as offline - indicating it had crashed yet again! I was completely dead in the water. I've accessed my iMac from work via Splashtop many times and never had the iMac crash. I have it set to lock the screen when the remote session is closed, and that's the issue - for some reason locking the screen triggers a kernel panic at random with my Mac Mini, but not my iMac.

I think you are totally right to be concerned by this behaviour from a newly purchased computer. At the very least you should be talking to Apple Support about it while the new M1 Mini is covered by Apple Care. Given your need for remote access, this is a very real problem for you – and you should make that clear to Apple. If their trouble shooting steps don't solve the problem, I would be asking for a replacement.

I read the entire thread because I have the same issue with a new MacBook Air M1 bought last week. Every time I turn on the screen saver and lock computer it reboots at some point after. Frustrating and it should not do this. I found that if I shut the lid it doesn't reboot, at least not yet. I find any use of the screensaver and it reboots. If I lock the screen using hot corners and let the screen saver kick in, it will reboot soon after. The only thing that stops a robot (that I have found so far) is to simply close the lid. On a Mac mini I suspect that's the same as putting it to sleep.

I will be taking this back to Apple as it should not operate like this. My 2015 MacBook Pro (which I replaced with the M1 Air, does not do this but then I didn't upgrade to Monterrey and its using Intel silicon.

I just saw this new M1 Mac Mini 16gb/512gb review and he has grown to hate it because of display and Bluetooth problems (mouse, keyboard) - I have it cued up to the discussion of the myriad of problems:

Here is the video from the beginning where he first praises his various other Macs:

I also have a M1 MBA, but I don't use a screensaver with it and I always just shut the lid if I'm not going to use it for a while (even if plugged in). This must be an M1 issue since my Intel iMac has NEVER had this problem, as I mentioned.

It seems what triggers the issue for me is locking the screen (option + command + q or Apple > Lock Screen) and then pressing escape to sleep the display. If I just sleep the display directly instead (control + shift + eject), it doesn't reboot, even though I have it set to require a password immediately upon waking the display. Totally bizarre.

Haven't experienced any display issues or Bluetooth issues with mine, thankfully. Well, I wasn't able to get my Magic Keyboard to connect during the initial setup, but after that it has worked flawlessly.

Yep, exactly the same issues. I have an appointment with the Apple store tomorrow. We'll see if they have anything to add. I suspect not one we just have to wait until 12.2.2 comes out, or better.

Hardware malfunctioning
Software bug
Try full erase and reinstall

I'm not really having the issue anymore, so I'm not going to bother with trying to exchange it. And if it's related to the M1 processor (as I thought might be the case given the fact that my Intel iMac has never had this issue), I don't understand why there would be any difference between two of the same M1 machines.

It is possible it is just another example of poor Apple quality control. That could explain how exchanging can fix the problem.

if it doesn't happen anymore probably you are ok. Still, might be worth getting it checked at store if possible.

I'm getting this now on a constant basis. I've done the following:

  1. Reformatted the Mac from scratch. to 12.3 (current as of this writing)
  2. Reformatted again to Big Sur (latest as of early 4/22)
  3. Reformatted again to 12.3
  4. Disconnected absolutely everything but the BT Apple keyboard and mouse
Still doing it. This thing A. didn't do this for a year, and B. isn't cheap (loaded Mini). I've never had issues like this before with a Mac; it's very frustrating.

Do you have the "Prevent your Mac from automatically sleeping when the display is off" option under System Preferences > Energy Saver enabled? As I mentioned, that helped a LOT for me, even though it hasn't totally eliminated the issue.

I noticed the other week when I left work for the weekend, I turned the display off (using the power button on the display), and I noticed the Mini had crashed and restarted when I went to access it later that day via remote software (because it shows it's "offline"). So for some odd reason, using the control + shift + eject shortcut to sleep the display is safe, but physically turning off the display isn't. So odd.

I'm not sure; I've messed with so much crap the last two weeks, it's a blur. I'll try that too. Mine's also crashed a couple times literally in the middle of something; for example, I was in Logic and it seized up, and crashed.

Thankfully mine has not done that yet. For me it seems strictly tied to computer and display sleep functions.

I'm bringing mine in to the "Apple Genius" today. I ran the hardware test, and it came up clean, last night. Really getting sick of this ****.
