IMHO they should just cut the price a bit, whatever they do to the specs. I'd probably buy one if they did.

So the current model could stick around for $499 and then other models range up to $1,099 or something.

The Mini is kind of like the Macbook. I think it would be great if the Mini could be like the Macbook AND like the Macbook Pro depending on the model you get.

Hell yea, bring on a slightly larger Mac mini (same footprint as Time capsule) in aluminum case with macbook Pro innards and possibly dual display output. I mean, even the GMA950 can feed two 23" screens.

G4

I've got a place on my shelf and a KVM cable sitting there waiting for it.

Must have new Mini.

(As long as new Mini still silent, still tiny, and offers significant computing ability increase over my PPC 1.42)

Hey, don't know what you are waiting for but even the Core Solo I got is heads and tails better than the G4s I had: mac mini G4 1.5 and powerbook G4.

Whatever is released now will be three generations improved! :p

...

Apple needs to be bolder with Mini. Prices should be 399/599. 2.1 and 2.4Ghz Penryn along with 1GB and 2GB of RAM standard and 4GB Max. X3100 is totally fine for me, Mini is not intended to be a powerhouse. But I want my 7200rpm HDD BTO option.

Also, a full Dual Link DVI-I out would be heaven for some who want to use 23"+ screens with it...

I agree. The price is cheaper than any other mac on the market but it's still at $600 for the low end, and it's made from parts that may not be worth much more than $300 wholesale.
I was waiting for someone to say this. The processor alone is more then US$200 and it has been since the first Intel Mac mini. Intel isn't going to give away its 45nm processors either.

would be nice. I was holding off on bying my first mac as I do not have the money right now for the laptop I want, and really could not see getting a mini if they were going to be discontinued, plus they were slow on upgrades. My wife needs a new desktop, but I do not have the money for an Imac. the mini would suit her fine - but if I am going to get a mac, I really want one that would suit my needs also until I could afford a laptop that suited my needs.

I make a lot of videos for YouTube/Godtube and for my church. i need processing power. Even a Duo Core 1.83 Dell running premier elements is slow as hell when you compile something that is made up of smaller clips and photos. With having to make 4-5 videos a week, I really cannot be spending 5 hrs on each video as it takes now. It takes about an hr just to render to either FLV or WMV.

Plus I also need something that can run parallels for my Windows only software. Mac Mini was just not powerful enough and even Apple sales people had said it would not meet my needs. Maybe with these upgrades, mini may be a viable solution.

Put me in the 'I Love the mini' category

I've had my G4 1.42 mac mini switched on 24/7/365 since I bought it and it's fantastic.

It runs my answering machine (Phlink), records my BBC radio shows (Audio Hijack Pro) and my (legal) torrents and if it's hard disk was bigger, I'd use it to serve all my music as well!

I test all my web sites on it (using PHP, Mysql, Qmail etc.), use Webmin to administer it.

It saves me a fortune in not having to keep my beast of a MacPro switched on all night and it's smaller than a sixpence ... well, OK, taking things a bit far there!

It's a sadly under appreciated little beauty of a machine and I'm so pleased that people will have the chance to buy one in the future. I'll certainly upgrade when the time comes!

Blu-ray Mac Mini, Please

Everyone should write to Steve Jobs and demand a Blu-ray Mac mini asap. Apple has got to stop being scared of Blu-ray because they could make some serious coin with a Front Row-integrated Blu-ray/iTunes rentals solution.

The Mac mini should start at $499 for a DVD-based model, but I would be willing to spend $999 on a Blu-ray model. (Obviously that price is too high, $799 would be better.)

But think about it: the ultimate HD box. The only box you need to hook up to your HDTV. It's your stereo, amplifier, all-format TV solution.

I'm sick of having to change inputs on my TV, and the mess of all the cables, etc. And let's face it, there won't be 50GB downloads on iTunes anytime soon. (Nor really should there... that's just too damn big to store on a HDD.)

Good news! I love that little guy!

Good - discontinuing the Mini would be a big mistake IMHO (not least because I'm planning to buy one for server use shortly ;) )
That's what I'm using it for-- and as a wireless router...

Make it a worthwhile machine or put it out of its misery.

The configurations offered have been pathetic for a year or more, it's just sad.

It's good news to hear the Mac Mini project is still alive. I would like to see support for dual-link DVI on the unit as well as a "better" graphics circuitry, such as an nVidia 8600M or something...the 64MB intel GMA is kind of lowly for something designed to be a desktop replacement...and the only "non-Pro" not-all-in-one Desktop that Apple makes...

But I understand why Apple doesn't put dual-link in the Mini, they just don't think somebody would drive a $1200+ display with a computer that costs half that, plus the current card will support a 23" , 24" or 27" at 1920x1200, they must think that's fine or more than enough --- they probably doubt anybody will be doing serious FinalCutPro or Aperture work @ 2560x1600. That's why they sell the Mac Pro, after all....

Still the Mini is a nice machine and will run basically all the Mac apps. RAM support for 4GB would be nice too, it's been lacking in that area. Plus a Mini that comes with a 200+ GB 7200rpm drive would be great.

Just a few ideas --

Good to hear. Until I got Leopard, I didn't have any problems with my Mac. Once I got Leopard, I have a few video artifacts due to trying to use it with a 24" LCD.

That wasn't enough to justify the move to the CS or CD models of the Mini.

But a new model would definitely be so much more up to date than my PPC model, that I would jump on it. As long as it stays true to its original form. If somehow it came out and was noisy or something, I'd stay in PPC land.

It'd be nice to see the Mini get a GPU similar to the iMac or MBP. But, of course, it'll never happen for fear of taking away sales from those two machines.

They need to lower the prices on the Mini, they just aren't competitive compared to a low end iMac.

apple ought to create a new midrange tower which is user upgradeable. ie graphics card, cpu, memory and space for 2 hard drives.

Hahahahaaa... I LOVE comedians. You had me laughing pretty hard there. Oh, wait, you were serious?

Got quite a ways down the thread before the pipe dreamers started chiming in with their imaginary mini tower. Sorry folks, ain't happening, not now, not ever, get over it. You'll get your mini tower when pigs fly, cats and dogs live in harmony, there's world peace, Apple makes a Mac tablet, and other fanciful (purely delusional) things happen.

I agree with all that. Throw in HDMI output, while your at it. I think I'd still want a separate receiver/amplifier, though.

Still, with or without HDMI and Blu-ray, I want one (upgraded).

So, the mini is too expensive and underpowered (not to mention lack of upgrade-ability), and a mid-range tower doesn't exist.

So the only thing can fit the bill for "mid-range" is the iMac (anything with integrated graphics doesn't really count)?

"Bring out your dead, bring out your dead...."

nice doors ref

Im holding out to buy 2 maybe 3 minis. One for my bar, one for my dad and maybe a 3rd for my sister. come on 1000+ posts about nothing! Its like a seinfeld thread!!!!

I gave my father a mac mini a few years back, and when he travels, he brings his mini along all the time. He has not laptop, and no need for it either. He is due for an upgrade soon. A new mini would be nice.
