So at a minimum I need a TV, speakers, amplifier, and then some number of inputs. For inputs I'd be happy with CD/DVD/Blu-Ray, cable/satellite, and my iTunes music library. I think I'm past the point where I need an AM/FM receiver.

I feel that if the Apple TV had a Blu-Ray drive, that would be fantastic. Unfortunately that still gives me four remotes. Amplifier, Apple TV, cable/satellite, and perhaps the TV (if it doesn't consolidate well with the cable/sat remote.)

I'm curious to hear about other people's setups. I'm not a Best Buy home-theater-in-a-box type consumer but I'm also not a $20,000 spender either. For me there is a sweet spot somewhere in between before you start hitting diminishing returns.

Right now I have only a Blu-ray player (BD30) and a Sony XBR4, which I sometimes hook my MBP up to for iTunes downloads, Hulu, etc. (See attached photo.) The XBR's speakers a PLENTY loud in my apartment, and I personally am not a big believer in surround sound in general. So I don't feel the need to have an amplifier. But aren't there surround-sound speakers one could hook up to a Mac mini if you wanted that?

As far as cable/satellite, I find almost all of television pretty terrible, and for the occasional show I really like I'll subscribe on iTunes. (I also bought a $30 HD antenna so I can watch the Superbowl, oscars, etc. -- in HD and FREE.) And then there's Hulu, and Netflix has Blu-ray....

Again, a Blu Mac mini would give me just one device... TV shows, rentals, music, etc. Plus Apple is working on a DVR...

Is Apple incapable of multitasking? This is a company with several billion in the bank and yet they act like they are a company of 50 needing to shift resources around because they only have 50 people working on hardware at any given time......

Thanks for the reply. There is also the other option of buying TV shows from iTS. When some people do the math, it ends up being cost effective if all they watch are a few shows. I'm not sure how well this would work for me, but the next time we move I may give it a test run prior to making the decision to hook up cable....hmm

The sad thing is it will probably still come with a Combo Drive that costs Apple about 25p.

Hahahahaaa... I LOVE comedians. You had me laughing pretty hard there. Oh, wait, you were serious?

Got quite a ways down the thread before the pipe dreamers started chiming in with their imaginary mini tower. Sorry folks, ain't happening, not now, not ever, get over it. You'll get your mini tower when pigs fly, cats and dogs live in harmony, there's world peace, Apple makes a Mac tablet, and other fanciful (purely delusional) things happen.

You mean like when apple makes a phone?

It's already very worthwhile for its intended market. I got the 1.83 version as an emergency stop gap, but now find myself in no rush to upgrade quickly as I orginally intended. For basic things most people do -- email, web surfing, word processing, light spreadsheets, modest photo work, etc. -- the Mini is a delight.

Sure, it's OK for low end stuff like word processing and web browsing...and it's also WAY overpriced if that's all it's intended for. You may not need a superdrive, but there are machines that cost hundreds less that include them.

I'd love to see apple boost the specs big time AND leave a low end model at an even lower price. Right now it doesn't deliver on being having decent performance OR being a good deal.

omg

This is so retarded Apple, don't even think about making another mini, the graphic card is going to suck because you don't learn that ATI will never be up to NVIDIAs standards. Plus on top of that you cant fit a lot of ram nor a bigger HDD unless you come up with some brilliant idea.
Just stop while your ahead. Seriously make a computer that can run CRYSIS at full & maybe consider patting your own backs with a semi congratulations. Because either if you want to succeed more you have to put your technology 5-10 years ahead sense we are so far behind. You say yours is but I don't think its fast enough especially with the new mac pros that I just got. Or fix the OS with an update and get rid of safari and remake it. Do something apple stop boring people.

apple ought to create a new midrange tower which is user upgradeable. ie graphics card, cpu, memory and space for 2 hard drives.

I've been hoping for a half-spec Mac Pro. Just cut a MP in haalf. One quad core CPU chip, two disk drives. slts for 16GB RAM all in a half tall case.

Te trouble is that every one at Apple knows that a machine like that would complete cannibalize the mini, iMac and MP products. Just think what would happen if Apple actually sold a "normal" computer.

I'd like to see it grow ever so slightly and pick up a 3.5" hard drive. Something looking sort of like a double height time capsule in appearance.

Huh? How do you figure that?

"Apple would never offer iTunes for Windows."

"Apple would never create a 24" iMac. It would be too top-heavy."

"Apple would never create their own office suite. It would make Microsoft angry."

"Apple would never offer a headless Mac."

"Apple would never switch to Intel chips."

"Apple will never get into the cell phone market. It's way too competitive."

"Apple will never let people run Windows on a Mac."

"Apple will never let developers into the iPhone. It's a security problem."

"Apple would never call something the Macbook Air. That's horrible sounding."

You sir, are the latest in a very long line of naysayers. So please, express your opinion with that in mind and save the sarcasm for a time when history isn't against you. Also, it wouldn't hurt for you to show a little more respect for those who know what they're talking about. The single biggest demand right now on Apple is a headless, midrange Mac tower. Not only are more and more Windows switchers demanding such a thing, but a lot of high-profile Mac commentators are saying the same. If you think Apple is ignoring that, you're delusional.

Exactly!
Everyone keeps harping on about BluRay for the Mac but I can't see that happening soon from a company that still offers a CD-Burner/DVD-Reader only with some of it's products.

I can't see the dual-link DVI anytime soon either. DVI and mini-DVI though... ;)

One of the problems with waiting for Apple hardware upgrades is between what they CAN do and the CHOOSE to do.

I bet it's within their scope to make a mini with a 2.4+ C2D, 2600 graphics, bigger/faster HDD and DVD-Burning but that would harm the iMac and they can't make the iMac too tasty or it would harm the Mac Pro and they can't make the Mac Pro more powerful or it would become self-aware, invent time-travel and go around murdering unfortunates with the surname 'Connor'.

I'm switching to Mac in about 2 weeks and I originally was going to buy the entry level Mini. But then I saw- No DVD burning. By the time I'd picked the £500 one added a 20" display, Mac keyboard* and new mouse I was reaching over £700 and the iMac's £800!

(* I know this is optional but I do really like them)

But I would still go for a Mini if they get the price/spec right. I just hope it's sooner rather than later as I'm buying in a coupla weeks.

It has happened. Apple chose to move up the price $1000 in order to push all in ones. Then again who cares if computer performs like a cheap Dell as long it doesn't look like one right.

i want another 30watt trooper machine, just like my 24/7 g4 has been for the past 3 years. optimal power/performance ratios FTW.

joke post?

Good news! But man do i hate appleinsider!!! All they did when there didn't came any new mac minis, they nagged about it was dead! It was basicly their idea! Now that it's about time for an update they change their mind and say that a new penryn mini is coming out! hmm... what a suprise! They rarely have any good sources either.

Any one with me on this?

I would like an SR chipset, superdrive, no price
increase and release within a month. The first may
well happen, second might, third unlikely and fourth
don't think so.

Because of something I'm involved in which would
utilise a computer (HD video editing),
I would like the update within
the next twenty-eight days and after having had
to deal with a PC for the first time in ages recently,
it reminded me of why I switched. However, if Apple
don't upgrade in that time, I might have to look at
a PC and upgrade my MM later in the year.

An iMac is out of the question due to budget.

Why on earth would Apple target gamers with a computer. Apple's drive for stability wouldn't work. Gamers are notorious for installing new drivers every time they're released, hoping for that extra frame per second. And the nanosecond that Nvidia released the next generation chip, they'd go bonkers because they couldn't just plug in a new video card. Crysis is only important to a small fraction of the computing world. Apple doesn't need the headaches that gamers offer.

However Apple could go get some cheap Geforce 6800 chips from a few years ago, they could be clocked such that the heat isn't bad, but it would give them the ability to play WoW or drive very large displays. It would probably be a major jump in performance over any integrated Intel GPU, but not so new that it would need a fan on constantly.

Apple is still way ahead in many ways. Find any major manufacturer selling a 6"x6"x2" computer. We'll wait. There isn't one. Some small outfit making custom rigs doesn't count. Apple has a machine that cools itself properly and runs silent. HP's nearest PC is 10"x10"x2". I haven't found the smallest Dell yet, but you can be sure that it's not Mini sized.

It's called market segmentation. The Mini has a specific market segment. Gaming is a different segment, one that Apple has decided to avoid. I don't blame them. Doing tech support on easy stuff sucks. Doing it for 14 year olds that want their games to run is another issue completely.

Amusing insight you have.

You mean ATI making high performance low cost video cards as opposed to Nvidia's "lets make it ever slightly more powerful than the competition, and we can double the price" tactics.

Oh and Crysis blows.

Appleinsider is backtracking on their last year's claims that the Mac mini was set to be discontinued. According to the rumor site, they've received word of the contrary:
The Mac Mini is expected to accompany the rest of the Mac line to the new Penryn Core 2 Duo processors. Specs are expected to start at 2.1GHz with the same GMA X3100 graphics processor used in the current MacBooks. The Mac Mini was last updated in August 2007.

MacScoop was first to predict Penryn Mac Mini updates in the coming weeks. Apple is also expected to also refresh their iMac line with the latest Intel processors.
