Why haven't they added screws so I can open the box safely? They really want me to scrap the plastic housing?

Is it strange if the first comment I had while looking at the pictures was, "Hey, we still get those cool white apple stickers!"?

Seeing that 3.5" drive next to the mini makes me realize the mini is just a Powerbook crammed into a small square box with no screen. With that being said, it's current limitation on hard drive size is 100gb? Is there a notebook drive bigger than 100gb? I don't know. I think it's awesome, but I'll wait until the specs increase to include at least a 64mb video card.

What's up with the custom build of OS X?
Every new Mac model always comes with a custom version of OS X that includes drivers for that particular model. IIRC, the Power Mac G5's were shipped with a custom 10.2.7 for example. In the next point release those modifications will be integrated into the "mainline".

Right now no one makes 2.5" drives above 100Mb.

hah

Is it stranger that my thought was, "darn, so the stickers I got with my U2 iPod weren't special?"

Oh, and first thing I did when I saw them was try to see if they'd glow in the dark 🙂

So what justification does Apple have for putting 256 MB RAM as stock, when 512 MB sticks are scarcely more expensive, and OS X runs so much better with 512 MB than 256? 😛

Their justification is sales. If they can get someone to spend an extra $75, $425 for ram upgrades its more $$ in their pocket. Not all reasons are based on hardware considerations. Some are based on Apple being a greedy bastard.

Yep, I bought a Samsung 7200 rpm 60GB hard drive for my brother's laptop for Christmas. You can get up to 80GB (that I'm aware of right now). They're out there.
Could you post a link please, or at least name a manufacturer? I've searched for 80GB 7200rpm 2.5" drives and can't find one. Thought I heard Seagate was working on one but it's not shown on their site yet.

The mini has a fan. Most people on this thread are talking out of their ***

Yes heard that it only turns on with heavy apps.
It is said that the noise level is just above 20dB so very quiet 😛

Im talking eMac sans monitor... thats not that much bigger than the mini, especially when you are still using a slot load laptop Optical drive instead of the massive 5.25 standard optical on the eMac.

As far as not saving money on the 7200 3.5 40GB, doing ONE search i found a 40GB for $43. Doing a similar search for "40GB 2.5 4200" got me a hard drive for $68.95. I bet Apple's prices would be slightly better because of bulk pricing. There is nothing BTO about it to make a 3.5 drive standard either.

The decision by apple to make the mini ridiculously small is because they wanted to impress people with the size, no matter what the underlining technology is behind the machine. It is not because of anything to do with Microelectronics... look at the micro-atx cases around that have 3.5s in them AND a power supply.. this is not a difficult feat in the least to make this puppy a few inches taller, and wider keep the PSU external still and give the thing a real performance jolt.

LOL. So you are saying Apple bases their designs around form not function. STOP THE PRESSES! OMG! YOU ARE KIDDING RIGHT?
Duh. Apple has always been about making it pretty before making it practical. As for the hard drives and prices. *sighs* You do understand how the market works right? Just because you did a google or pricegrabber search and found the deal of the week doesn't mean that's the base price and that’s the price an OEM would pay for a device?
You want to get a unit price. Go to the manufacturer and see if you can buy off their site. Find out how much a top tiered manufacturer's drive goes for and scale it back from there for bulk purchases. And I'm not talking some no named company. Apple needs to ship these in bulk. Again we are talking a planned 100,000 units per month. So Simple inc is probably not going to be able to handle the orders. I’m talking Seagate, Toshiba, etc. 7200 laptop drives don't ship standard in most laptops and there IS a reason for that.

See I'm at odds with this myself. I've been holding off getting a Mac because of price. Well price and because PowerBook perf is crap but that's another topic. Well price isn't an issue anymore. I CAN live without a 64MB card and Core Image. Its just it kind of sucks that tiger is now months away and I know that the Mini isn't going to be a perfect package for tiger. It somewhat disheartening. And before someone tells me to get an iMac I think its asinine that I have to spend over a grand more for just Core Image and a system that is 100% compatible.
Then again Apple took down the cards that were compatible with Tiger's Core Image so I hold out some hope.

Still.

They COULD have made a larger case to make the Mac Mini more practical. Its not like they would have been whipped by critics if they made the smallest desktop around, but it was 8" by 8" instead. If nobody sees the 6" by 6" Mac Mini, nobody could have complained and we could have had a faster HD.

And Apple makes a boatload of money off of duping switchers out of money by charging more for RAM. Many switchers still think that the RAM used in an Apple is different, and so they purchase "Apple RAM" to make sure it's the right stuff. Hell, I've been asked by a friend if he needed to get a new CRT if he wanted to buy a Mac. 😛 Oh man, Apple could take much more advantage of their "small-ness" if they wanted to, but then there are moral complications....

I sure hope a 7200RPM hard drive doesn't exceed a Mac mini's cooling capacities.

Would an external FireWire 3.5" 7200RPM HD be faster then the internal 2.5" 4200RPM HD?

Uh. iDon't think so. It is 100 GB. 😉 And just to make sure this isn't an issue for you in the future, Mb is Megabits, MB is Megabites. 8 bits to 1 byte. Thus, 800Gb is 100GB.

And that is a neat theory on Asteroid. If that is true... Ohhhhhh.... Does a TiVo subscription transfer over? 😛 😀

How do you know that?

Apple has not released the final requirements for Tiger. Specifically, the GPU reqs have been removed. And who is to say the mini will still be on rev A when Tiger ships?

Skimming through the headline, I read "iPod Mini photo details".
Oh my god! thats so great.
....No wait. 😛

D'oh!

Announced in early January, shipping EARLY...so they HAVE to have been built in December, which'd be before iLife would be ready for pre-installation (but not for CD duping....)

The motherboard of the Mac mini says "2004".

You didn't even BOTHER to finish reading my post did you? 🙄

I said I know based on the info we currently have. The last specs stated Core Image wouldn't work with the minis GPU. That is ALL we have to go on right now. Apple removing the cards is neither here nor there. They may have done it to keep people from going "Well damn. The mini isn't supported. I guess I won't get one." Or they may have done it because they are tweaking the specs to work with the mini.

I read somewhere (but can't remember where) that CoreImage specs hadn't been finalised yet. So there is still hope Apple manages to support the Radeon 9200.

Because even their lowest model of PowerMac only comes with 256MB. 🙄
