Some people are clueless. The mini is not for power users. If you are trying to configure a 25k mini mac, your just foolish for not getting an Imac. I guess these message boards allow perpetual whiners a formum for whining. Then again, makes me feel good about my analytical abilitites.

Spoiled people will always complain about Apple's latest stuff. Apple could stuff dual 5GHz G5s in this Mini and people would find something to bitch about. I wonder if the whiners have any intention of spending money to begin with. People constantly complain and threaten to switch to a PC, yet they're always back to see what Apple has to offer. Those suckers can't live without OS X and they know it. :D

When the iPod first came out, I remember numerous people who said the iPod was a stupid, expensive mistake. Well, there's a reason why Jobs is running a multi-billion dollar company and the whiners are at home playing video games on their precious Macs.

I'd love to see more people put their money where their mouth is. **** and use the machine that suits your needs or go buy that Dell you keep talking about. Vote with your money, not the silly vote on MR's front page.

[End rant]
continue spoiled whining and Monday morning CEO'ing :p

Is it just me, or are others unable to add the .mac $69 promo to their shopping cart when trying to order this puppy?

Maybe the cart hasn't yet been told that the mac mini qualifies... anyone wanna tell me .mac sucks and I shouldn't get it, anyway? Are there better 3rd party virus scanners, etc.?

There have been zero documented viruses for OS X. Count 'em, zero.

If you have broadband, your ISP likely gives you free web server space. You can backup onto CD's or DVD's, depending on your drive. The rest of the features are just services to post stuff on the web. With an FTP client, some server space, and a basic knowledge of HTML, you could accomplish everything that .mac has to offer.

That said, .Mac is idiot-proof. If you don't have basic web skills and/or a desire to learn, .Mac is for you.

This would make it perfect

Two requests:

I need a cheap KVM switch that works with Bluetooth so I can use a single BT keyboard/Mouse and DVI Monitor with multiple PCs/Macs. - That alone would get me to buy one.

Apple should bundle It! - Dell does it - Make a bundle of the Mac Mini, BT Keyboard, Mouse, maybe some new 15" Flat Panel and bundle it for $999 - that would be some bundle discount of about $100 - Sold!

Memory

Hmmm...
My first email confirmation says:

You are the one making the unfair comparison. The iMac G5 comes with a 20" LCD display driven by an ADC connection. You are comparing a $300.00 15" driven by VGA or a $100.00 CRT driven by VGA. Give me a break!

Swissmann is correct! The macmini low price is misleading. I configured one the way I would want to buy one and it came to $1500.00 with Applecare before tax. This was without a monitor. Add Apple's cheapest monitor (currently a 20" LCD @ $999.00) and it comes to $2500.00.

Apple needs to offer lower ram price, low priced mouse & key  board & 15" LCD bundle to make this a popular seller.

Otherwise value buyers will buy a cheap $449.00 Dell that includes monitor, keyboard, mouse, faster cpu, equivalent gpu, word perfect, and XP home media package.

The only thing i agree with here is that the ram should be cheaper since it cannot be installed except by apple.

There is a reason this looks nothing like a computer. There is a reason computers are all so unnecessarily large. They are going for different markets... or i should say that regular old computers aren't aiming at any market except the "cut costs" market. This has the look and attitude of a consumer electronics device - just like the ipod. It doesn't feel like it has to be at a desk. That liberating feeling makes this computer appealing to people who really don't know or care what is inside their computer. It is also hardly more expensive than an ipod... I'd spend the extra $80 for airport extreme, up it to 512 mb ram and buy a USB based wireless keyboard. Who needs a monitor when I already have a high def tv? Now i can just hit the tv/video button on my tv remote and navigate my music, do audio, text or video chats, check movie times, show photos, and all without having to be AT A COMPUTER. That is an essential difference. YEAH YEAH YEAH you could do that with a TV card in any computer, but no computer is this small and this cheap at the same time. The specs of a PC are unimportant - it is the way it seems to fit into your life that is most important.

This is a great addition. It'll bring a lot of switchers, especially those who have considered switching but the price always turned them away. And BTW, most people won't buy their displays from Apple. Sure, if you do then the iMac is a much better deal, but most people either have them already, or they can find a decent 17" monitor for around (usually under) $100.

Damn... what is it with Apple ripping people off in Australia?

The Sydney Morning Herald have kindly posted a Reuters article and included the AUD conversions of the USD prices - they're so much different!

http://www.smh.com.au/news/Technology/The-120-song-130-iPod/2005/01/12/1105423518180.html

For example, 499 USD converts to 654 AUD, but the Australian Apple Store is selling the 1.25GHz Mac Mini for $799; the 1.4GHz model is going for $949, which is vastly more than the USD/AUD conversion of $785. We're supposed to pay more for the 1.25GHz model than we should be for the 1.4GHz one? Wow, thanks, Apple! Does it really cost $150 more to send something to Australia?

The prices for the other products mentioned in the article (and, I assume, everything else Apple sells in Australia) aren't much better.

Apple loves Front-242

So did anyone notice the Front-242 lyrics on the "graphics" page for the mini. Apple must have some strange people working for them these days to be using industrial music lyrics on their site. If your not familiar with the band they had a nice song called "Headhunter" off of their "Front by Front" album in 1988.

the chorus:
"One you lock the target,
Two you bait the line,
Three you slowly spread the net
And four you catch the man!"

Next they will be using "Skinny Puppy"
Rock on Apple!

Where did you hear this? I can only say, don't get your hopes up. The mini has a 32MB 9200 - no where near as good as your X800. Don't count on it running well.

JOD8FY

Its right on apples mini page

http://www.apple.com/macmini/graphics.html

"Lock the Target

Or one 3D game. Go ahead, just try to play Halo on a budget PC. Most say they’re good for 2D games only. That’s because an “integrated Intel graphics” chip steals power from the CPU and siphons off memory from system-level RAM. You’d have to buy an extra card to get the graphics performance of Mac mini, and some cheaper PCs don’t even have an open slot to let you add one."

Do you think the iLife 05 packaged with the Mac mini will install on my G5 Powermac?

Wondering if the iLife CDs that the mini comes with will also install on my Powermac G5.

I was going to buy iLife 05, but I may just get the mini and get both. Of course I would uninstall it from the mini before I install it on the G5 as to not violate any user agreements.

Quite honestly, when I buy one of these, it will be for one of two reasons...

A) I am replacing another system. I doubt I will need to replace my LCD screens, wireless keyboard, or mouse at that time.

B. ) I am adding to my current PC setup, in which case, due to ergonomics, I will probably just buy a Belkin KVM from the apple/macmini/accessories page.

Either way, this is considered a replacement, or bait computer. It is not being marketed the same way as the iMac G5.

Just keep in mind. Most die-hard Windows users would not be happy with the bottom of the line DELL. In my case, I still build my own, as I am not happy with any DELL. This is a cheap way for Windows users to 'try' a mac without forking over $2k .

Max.

You can buy the same Belkin KVM at www.newegg.com for $79.00, @ Apple it will cost you $129.00.

I was pretty negitive about the specs back when reading about the rumors, but I am warming up to this pc, I still think it should have faster parts but I see the possiblites of adding this to my existing keyboard, monitor & mouse with a KVM switch. If I bought a iMac I would also have to buy a desk & another chair for my office which I don't want to if I don't have to.

tarriffs? Are all computers more? Is a dell in american $ converted to AUD cheaper than the price in australia?

OK, I want to try a MAC, because like most people I'm sick of the crashes, anti virus software incompatibilities, and spyware. So I have a few questions. First I have a SAMSUNG 51" DLP HDTV, and would like to know if the Mac Mini would work with this. If it would I'm surely interested in purchasing this. I would configure it with the Wireless Keyboard and mouse and it still is cheaper than any other MAC you can find, plus I get the educational discount. So will it work with my TV. I have a DVI port, and a HDMI port on the TV. This is what I've been waiting for. I didn't want to spend more than $1000 for a MAC and than have to learn the OS all over again only to find I didn't like it. This solves that problem. I love Apple and if this works out and I like it I'm ditching my Dimension 8300, for a G5 or something. Also can I find a wireless keyboard and mouse that will work with the Mini at Officemax or Staples, and will it be cheaper?
yes, you can get a wireless microsoft mouse and keyboard set for about $60. if you get the apple keyboard and mouse it is $100 plus $50 to add bluetooth. The only difference is that the microsoft mouse uses a usb port and has a little antenna dongle that you will have to put somewhere.

Did you stop to think that maybe Oz has different tariffs on things coming from China? :) Or that they may be required to do some other regional-specific thing, like buy some stuff locally? I'm just guessing, of course, but you can't just compare apples to... um, apples? :)

Also, in re: the complaints about the G4 and the 256MB base RAM; shouldn't the faster FSB from previous G4s make up for this, at least partially? I'm still in the Windows world, and it makes a big difference, here.

What are they thinking, this thing looks great but can't chose a better graphics card?? this is a 5 yr old card, barely enough to run OSX. Forget any games, forget Garageband. With the also outdated G4.
You can internet and word process, maybe a little Iphoto.

Too bad it puts Apple right back to underpowered TOY status.

Steve

Not quite...A Radeon 9200 can easily run Jedi Academy, JK2, UT2k4, etc.

...This machine is designed for people who are price sensitive who don't need top end machines. The Mac Mini is an excellent balance and will sell like hot cakes.

I completely agree. I work at a nonprofit, and we've been using rev. 1 & 2 233 & 350 MHz G3 iMacs for a long time now, which are finally starting to die. For an investment of about $2K, we can replace four computers in our office for the nominal price of a single G5 tower system, 2-3 eMacs (depending on configuration), or 1-2 G5 iMacs. Plus, there is a "green" component to the MacMini - by using existing (and most likely, perfectly functional) end-user monitors from PC switchers, it keeps them out of landfills.

As a home user, I'm now starting to save for a souped-up rev. 2 MacMini, which, if Apple sticks to its general release timelines, could appear later this year.

After reading all the specs, I'm thrilled with this system - I do wish it had a little more VRAM (maybe 64MB), but that's all. Apple's really outdone themselves with this one. That being said, here's my predictions for future MacMinis (rev. 2 & 3 machines):

* Expandible VRAM a la PowerBook (perhaps a BTO 32 or 64MB choice)
* Larger HDDs: notebook drives seem to lag about a year behind 3.5" drives in terms of space and speed, so this might be a logical progression.
* Bigger DIMMs: If 2GB DIMMs start selling more cheaply, I'd bet anything the existing memory controllers in the MacMinis could handle them... This isn't a new phenomenon with Apple hardware.
* Faster CPU: maybe mid-year 2005 the 1.5GHz G4 chip might make an appearance in the pricier Mini, and maybe in 2006 the 1.6GHz G5 chip (or its low-end equivalent at that time).
* Maybe 10/100/1000 Ethernet, though given the target market, I'm not sure it's necessary.

The faster CPU and additional graphics memory might come concurrently with Tiger, which would take full advantage of them.

I can't wait to buy one of these later this year - I already have the spot picked out for it: sitting right on top of my souped up G3 Blue & White!

Go Apple, this looks like a home run. :D

I for one am glad Apple didn't include a keyboard and mouse. I dont like either of them anyway. The keyboard is at a crazy, NON-ADJUSTABLE angle the one button/no scroll wheel mouse sucks! If not including them helps keep the price down then thats great. I think they should make the mouse and kb optional on all macs!
