is this from a trusted source? :D

Wait! Wait! I just looked it up, and apperently next week there's going to be a TUESDAY!

That's proof that the new Mac Mini and iPods with full PDA functionality will be released!

Care to point me to a post where you elaborate on this.
IT is a bit vague on details or reasons.

this is from a duplicate assertation by mathwhiz on another thread. These are his reasons.

Mathwhiz: "Intel drops chip prices on the 22nd, 2 promos end the 23rd, sufficient time after iphone and before school.... and everything's overdue!!!! "

I say no way will there be new iMacs or mini's before the Sept 16th.

Simple business practices tells everyone that if a product isn't selling or making the enough to keep it going then its not worth it to keep producing it. So obviously if true, the MacMini didn't sell very well. Its a low end computer and by the time you get a keyboard, mouse, and display, you're in iMac territory as far as price goes and the iMac is a far better computer than the MacMini. Yes, the MacMini has its places, but more often than not, people will go for the iMac instead. Its an end to end solution.

Take this for example, why was the MacMini originally released? It was to TRY and compete in the low end computer segment. Mainly the $499 Dell type thing. Well compared to a Dell, the MacMini isn't a very good deal at all. The Dell is an end to end solution. It comes with everything you need right out of the box. The MacMini doesn't, plain and simple.

I honestly can't see the MacMini as being a money maker for Apple. This is why it doesn't come with a keyboard and mouse. Apple had to design a package that would not cost them as much for shipping (which is a big cost for Apple) to make as much money off this as possible. Yes, the MacMini did switch a bunch of people, but so did lots of other Macs. It wasn't just the MacMini that did so. In business, if a product isn't making you any money, or not enough money to keep it going you kill it no matter how well people like it. Apple is in business to make money, not keep a select group of people happy.

I'm sorry that it was a good computer for you and some others here, but sometimes you just gotta let things go. Some things don't last forever.

BTW...the iPod Mini was probably the best selling iPod until it was replaced by the iPod Nano. Everywhere I go I see people with iPod Mini's, not regular iPods or iPod Nanos. I don't know what people are trying to get at there. It was kind of funny because people thought it wouldn't sell very well at all because it was only $50 less expensive than a 20GB iPod and it only had 4GB of HD space, yet it was Apple's best selling iPod. It out sold the the regular iPod by a bunch.

Also, nobody has true numbers of any types of sales because Apple doesn't release those numbers.

The MacMini is an awesome HDTV addon though. I would much rather spend the extra 300$ to get a full blown mini than an AppleTV... but Maybe the AppleTV is the next MacMini... there's a thought for you.

Canning the AppleTV would make a lot more sense.

Even if the Mini really isn't selling, it is boosting sales of the next higher models (as others have mentioned).

THIS is the strategy! :D

I can see it from here, just before replacing the minis, Steve asked Appleinsider to spread the rumor to give Mini sales their last boost!

That's it! That's where these rumors come from! It's like Britain's vs. Germany's spies in WWII: Germany thinks it has spies in Britain, but in fact, Britain has control of them. They send information to Germany (Furer! They're going to attack Calais and Norway!) that would benefit Britain (Normandy invasion).

Apple has created these false "sources" in order to actually boost sales around products, test the waters about lineup changes, get feedback,
etc. Perhaps AppleInsider is operated by Apple, even... and that's why ThinkSecret keeps getting it wrong... Apple hasn't infiltrated their ranks.

With the rumors that the iPod is going to have a small Mac OS X version, I think it will blend with and absorb the mac mini.

I mean, why not have your iPod be a full, complete computer?

Mainly because it would be slower & more expensive.

Of course, if it can do everything you want that's fine (and that will happen at some stage... I just don't think we're there ye).

I do think that Apple may make a "wireless widescreen iPod + TV dock" that functions almost identically to an AppleTV when docked.... but even then the iPod may not be capable of the same menus, or 720p resolution. It certainly can't match a Mac Mini's power.

it doesn't matter much to me, they should really make something that is between the mini and the macpro, without monitor (not imac)

No, I didn't mean that at all, I meant that the Macintosh has never been a machine that you build yourself, and upgrade every component like non-Macintosh computers have always been.

Your newsflash is rude and not needed.

I would compare macs vs. PC's like eating at a good restaurant vs. cooking at home. Macs, the chefs pick the best ingredients for the highest quality dishes; PC's, you take what you have and do the best you can; you save money, but at the cost of quality. Even worse are people who buy a PC, then don't upgrade it and run it until it dies; that's like getting fast food takeout = cheap and very low quality, and you don't even get to pick what you exactly want.

Hey guys..

Good to know about the DVI to HDMI lead. I'm preparing to jump on a new mini as soon as we get word on whether there will be something new.

Here's another thing I've been wondering... How long a cable could I get away with? I'm wondering if can run the cable from 1 room to another?

Any ideas?

Find a way to do it wirelessly. :D

I think eliminating the the mini will deter many people from switching. When you can buy a $400 gateway or dell many low income computer users would not not opt for the $1000 machine (even if its worth every penny). I know a few people who are interested in trying apple and want to get the mini because of its price. Until i get a more credible source i will dismiss the idea of the mini being discontinued as here say. (Long live the mini)

I agree with you. But to me apples quality is in their software. The way they build software is amazing to me. For it to look beautiful and highly functional is why i decided to switch to apple. I got so tried of widows and their mindless menus. The hard ware is pretty much the same. Or at least the components that go into each computer.

I find the hardware to be very different on the Mac side. Things are sleeker, more stylish, and much, much sexier:) Apple products are just beautiful, inside and out.

naw...

this has been said many times, but i doubt it.

a. because it is the low end mac that switchers buy to test it. Apple would lose switchers by discontinuing it.

b. with apple's technology they could refresh the look by making as small as Apple TV.

Nah. I think the next generation mac that replaces the mini, or the next revision of mini, depending on what happens, will be slightly bigger to accomodate a full HDD, lowering the price. I also think they'll have advances in cooling so they can plop a cheaper desktop chip in. I think the mac mini or replacement will have even more measures to cut costs.

Just out of curiousity, where do the "Mini is teh DOOOMED" posters get their info on the Mini's allegedly poor sales?

I only ask, because I've never seen any hard data on this. I have noted that if you do a search on either the US or UK Amazon and rank Macs by sales, one or other of the Minis is always either the first or second desktop system that comes up, which doesn't tell us much but is the only definite information I've ever found and seems to at least slightly contradict assertions that the Mini is a poor seller.

Cheers

Jim
