Just out of curiousity, where do the "Mini is teh DOOOMED" posters get their info on the Mini's allegedly poor sales?

I only ask, because I've never seen any hard data on this. I have noted that if you do a search on either the US or UK Amazon and rank Macs by sales, one or other of the Minis is always either the first or second desktop system that comes up, which doesn't tell us much but is the only definite information I've ever found and seems to at least slightly contradict assertions that the Mini is a poor seller.

Cheers

Jim

Normally at the end of financial quarters (didn't see the results for this latest one) the release figures for number of laptops and desktops sold, perhaps they also release the figures for individual product lines, although I can't ever remember seeing those figures.

It does seem odd that the mini hasn't seen an update for nearly a year, with all the recent rumours about it being news it will be discontinued... there doesn't seem much hope for it.

I have read this rumor, and I've been thinking about getting a mini, just so that I can replace my old PC that's not doing so well until I can afford a bigger Mac. But are they worth it? It seems like they don't have much graphics capability, for one.

All depends what you want to do graphics wise. The Mac Mini will be fine for most things except gaming, although it runs GTA San Andreas pretty well, and high end video work. IF you are going to buy it I would suggest upping the ram to 2Gb and then you should have a very capable machine.

Well, this is pretty much my point. It's a good machine, with the caveats you offer, that makes a fantastic media centre (and this is one of the main points against those who point out cheaper systems with similar specs - this machine actually looks nice in your living room*), and the only anecdotal sales evidence I can find seem to indicate that the machine is selling quite nicely, thank you.

So ... the only real evidence that it might be axed is the fact that it's currently the most overdue for an update in Apple's line-up, then?

Cheers!

Jim

*Don't try and tell me that paying extra for nice aesthetics is in some way foolish - we have our Mini in the living room ... I wouldn't buy a butt-ugly TV or stereo just to save a few quid. Same principle.

Shame coz mini would be a perfect "small footprint" setup... oh well - let's see what other companies have to offer:

New Sony Vaio:)

Looks like Macbook dont you think?

The Problem with the mini was that it didn't share the benefits of other macs (built in speakers/screen/webcam/the list goes on)...so the only thing going for it was the mac osx software

there it wasn't really worth the sacrifice of speed from an equivilent windows machine for windows people...and mac people knew what they got for a few hundred dollars more.

If Apple are dropping the 17" iMac (as rumoured) I cant see them dropping the Mac Mini unless they are doing something new for an entry level Mac.

I bought one about a year ago, when they all went to core 2. Upped the RAM to 2 giga, and I am really happy with it... I also have a MacBook Black but I prefer the Mini... It is a very capable computer and can run XP without hurdles. Only thing I hate is the Apple keyboard

I was fully aware that an iMac would have been more "cost efficient"...but have u ever tried sneaking one of those past custom? :D

A MacMini is the perfect desktop for a European on a shopping spree.. I hope they don't dicontinue it... :p

A mini or the iMac?

I bought the Mini at the Apple shop near the Moscone Center in San Francisco last September... I like it a lot because of its small footprint and the 22" monitor attached to it ;)

A MacMini can be placed in a carry on and "imported" rather easily... The base model is 500 Euros with tax in the U.S. while a 20" iMac will set one back about 1500 Euros or 2kilo bucks

Since I get 3" CD at conferences with papers, I need an external burner anyhow or something really "pro" like a 4-core xeon with a CD tray

Was just curious from the "core 2" description in your post. I guess you meant when all the others in the lineup went to core 2 duo?

Regardless, I've always really like the mini's but I really doubt they'll be around long. I'm hoping the the 2nd generation iPhone and 7th generation iPods will be able to dock with an ACD and BT keyboard/mouse setup.

i'm a pc guy and there's no way in hell that i'd buy a sony pc...i'm going to have to pick up a mac mini soon just to mess around with it.

I would personally get the iMac, seeing that Mini looks abandoned and the iMac has dedicated graphics...but who knows?

It's not like all the Minis in the world will stop working if Apple discontinues making them. Anyone who wants a Mini should just go ahead and buy one, as long as you understand its limitations.

I liked the mini.
It's not gone yet!

does any one else see the cube coming back a perfect idea it be perfect for gamers if you could get a pci express card slot or something to expand etc i think a intel cube would sell like crazy

the cube was definitely ahead of its time. Maybe its time has come.

I could see SJ actually liking the name iCube in his lineup. Even in the original form factor It would still be compact enough to awe switchers and satisfy Jobs, but with mid-range customizable desktop components (provided you could cool it), it might sell better than the mini ever did. iCube would combine a midrange tower with the mini replacement, satisfying everone.
