well that makes commone sense which people in the forum lack. Macmini is just like the g4 cube all over again it is for mac crazy fans who have no lives and just buy apples. This is just like the macbook air has no market just for crazy apple fans who have implusive behavior. By the end of this year no macbook air, and no mac mini. Just because 100 people on this forum live in their own world does not meant hat the 6 billion out there is actually going to buy apples. That is why they have 6% marketshare. That is just about everyone in the forum.

The article is from last May - the Mini was supposed to die 8 months ago. It's still around...

Wow, OK. The mini may be overpriced for its power, but it is by no means just "for mac crazy fans who have no lives and just buy apples". It differs in one crucial way from the MBA: price. It is fairly inexpensive, and very affordable compared to this guy and other small desktops. Although people who fit your description may buy a mini just for fun, it is really meant for the "switchers" who want to try out the Mac but don't want to spend a fortune. You may, however, be right about the MBA.

The company I work at just bought a Mini.

Being the most affordable Mac avilable, they bought it to hook up in the server room (to one of our server KVM's) to do configuration testing since our Marketing department uses a lot of Macs.

I used to own a Mac Mini myself as well. Coming from the PC world it was the perfect system to get me to switch. It is headless (which allowed me to re-use my PC peripherals/monitor), and affordable. If Apple had never released a Mini, I would have never switched to Macs. I don't see the Mini going away anytime soon. It is overpriced though, considering the PowerPC versions were $100 cheaper, had a better graphics chip, and I would assume had a more expensive CPU. The iMacs are of no interest to me.

The MBA in it's current configuration has no chance of surviving. Apple either needs to drop the price, or address the battery issue. Expect a revision before the end of the year.

Think it's possible they'll just rebrand the mini as an AppleTV? AppleTV 2.0, perhaps? Give the current AppleTV a little more storage space and a little more OS X to it and ditch the mini?

That seems to be a good strategy. Like many on MR, I've been vacillating between the ATV and the Mini, and the ATV2 won.

I hope they'll update the mini soon, although I will probably get a new computer before then

I really can't express how much I want an updated Mac Mini with a Blu-ray player! Seriously, that would be a real killer on the market I think. Imagine the mediacenter possibilities!

But alas, I guess Apple wants people to buy Apple-TV instead :(

The Mac mini G4 was the Mac that brought me into the OS X world. I had been using Mac OS 8 and OS 9 on my ancient Umax c500e for almost 8 years. My main computer at the time was a WinXP system. By May of 2005, I had switched just about everything over to the mini.

It's still working great today, but I would love to see an updated model. The latest 2.0ghz C2D is not bad, but I'd like to see it continue on as a product and eventually get another mini to replace my G4 someday.

Why is this thread still going?

*that's a serious question*

Except the large passage of time to confirm this article is false.

I want a speed bump and SR. 2.16 with 4gig and an x3100 and I will fork over the cash.

I doubt apple would get rid of it. They want to lure people from PC and the mini is the best shot. People can use all their own gear and they get a nice lil comp out of the deal.

Cos there are a whole load of us who want to see a new Mini.
I have been waiting for news of an upgrade for a while now.
Yes I know you buy when you need and i guess I don't "need" much but if and when they do an upgrade I'm right in line.

Ah...that would be my dream machine too :)
But I would be very happy with an upgraded Mini and a PS3.
Come on Apple it's been too long in coming...bit like the MBP's

im one of those window converts, I have a really nice monitor, but not enough money for a mac pro. I want to upgrade to mac desktop and really the mini is my only option.

Im totally confused about what to do. Do I just buy a top of the range mini now, or wait? But if I wait I get the impression Apple may kill off the mini! Honestly how long could we be waiting for news of a possible successor? Doesnt see to be any indication that any news is coming soon anyway (or am I miss informed?)

I have been wanting a Mini for a long time. I am really ready to dump Microsoft crap for a Mac, but I just can't afford the higher priced models. My needs are very basic and I don't need a lot of power or capacity. The only reason I haven't bought one yet is I'm waiting for my Compaq laptop to die, to truly justify the purchase. If it doesn't hurry up, I may have to accidentally drop it on the floor ;). In the meantime, I hope they don't discontinue the Mini anytime soon. There are a lot of us out there that are ex-Microsoft users, who want to jump ship but are put off by the higher Apple prices. My last PC only cost $600. That's why the Mini market will continue.

No, I think you are as informed as the rest of us.
The Mini is without a doubt the least talked about machine in the Apple range.
I am also really wanting to invest but I'm able to wait so that's what I'll do .... for a while longer.
My gut says there is a 50/50 chance of an upgrade or discontinuation.
The big question is ...if they discontinue it, what comes next...if anything.

Funnily enough if I consider what the upgrade might be, it might only be a speed bump so I'm wondering why I'm waiting  :D

I completely agree with you on the Blu-Ray option, but I may end up getting a PS3 for that before Apple does anything about it. Digital media stored on a hard drive or network needs to be accessible in your living room and the Apple TV addresses just that. However, with the advent of hi-def optical discs and players saturating the market, there are a lot of us ready to replace our aging DVD players. There are, of course, 3rd party options out there to upgrade a Mini to Blu-Ray and add a USB TV tuner but those options are never going to be as obvious or attractive to the consumer, or profitable for Apple, for that matter, as an all-in-one device would be.

I theorised that maybe the mac mini will eventually be replaced by a dock based ipod touch/iphone device.

for example, the dock will accomodate the ipod touch or iphone, which would then be connected via the dock to a full size keyboard/mouse and screen.

The ipod touch/iphone (with the new SDK) would seem powerful enough to do the following:

- internet browsing, email etc. (does this already)
- playing itunes media (does this already)
- open/edit/create office documents (an iWork suite for ipod touch/iphone)
- maybe an iphoto type image app.
- .Mac access/blogging etc
- light gaming (i imagine games will be the first apps released with the new SDK)

obvious missing feature is the optical drive, but maybe this could be negated by optional external drive, remote drive (like the macbook air). And this may become less of an issue in the future as discs become less and less used - especially as ipod touch/iphone apps are downloaded direct from the itunes store.

I'm just speculating of course, anyone else lke to comment about this potential solution to the mac mini question?

Personally of course im hoping a MacPro light will be released for half the current lowest price mac pro - we can all dream cant we?

I have had mixed views of the mini since it came out. I have an instructor at college that bought his as his first ever Mac and he loves his (which happens to be a PPC mini). I have thought in the past about getting one but went for the MacBook and bought an external monitor and this is now my main system. I hate to see them go though because it was so easy for people to switch to Mac with the mini, most people switching already had a monitor and USB keyboard/mouse. Maybe Apple needs to bring back something that compares with the eMac. Not that I have any doubts, people will keep switching, even if they have to pay a bit more for their first Mac computer.

Wow. That's one angry little troll.
