Well folks looks like I have turn the corner and I don't plan to ever come back! I bought my decked out top of the line Dell Hybird a few months before Jobs wrote his insulting comments after a conference call and I finally sealed the deal today when I placed my order for the new Dell mid range tower with the Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 / 2.33 GHz for only $799.
Good for you. I'm leaning that way myself having just bought a netbook; my first ever windoze computer. Glossy screens and no mid-Mac are really turning me off.

Damn a Quad for 799? That sounds pretty cheap. Good luck

Yep! :) so Im glad a few of you see my point and my reason for going over.

A direct quote from SJ a month or so back after a conference call said and I quote!

"we do not know how to build a $500 budget box"

Steve Jobs

I that was saying the 499 price point vs the 599 price point.....maybe thats just how I read it

God, that looks delicious! Turkey pot pie is one of my all-time favorites. I've been in Korea for 4 years and haven't tasted turkey the whole time.

I think, though, that S.J. would insist that the top of the pie be glazed, for that must-have glossy appeal.

Oh, and about switching to a PC... I'm leaning that way, too. It'll have be something I can install OSX on, though. No MS OS for me! But Apple is really messing up their hardware line up--all high-end and glossy. With the current economic turmoil, the price of the new machines jumped way out of reach here in Korea (for a 2nd machine at least, which is what I need for work). I really regret, now, selling my old PPC Mac Mini. So, to do light word processing at work, I'm looking at a netbook. Apparently, it's easy to install Leopard on them. And they cost 1/5 of a MB Air around here! On the other hand, I might just try to find a used Mac Mini G4 or Core Solo.... If they update the Mac Mini in January, I may get a new one of those if they are priced reasonably. We'll see.

Personally, I think Apple will see their market share shrink in the next couple of years. Their neglect of the low end will cost them.

If that's actually a quote & not a journalist's rewording, then whoever said it sounds like a right arrogant *anker! :)

I wonder how Apple employees must feel when their fearless leader publicly says that they are incompetent. Must be great for morale!

I know....and as I said, I read that as him addressing why the Mac Mini is no longer 499 as it was when Apple used PPC, and it jumped to 599(which isn't 500) when Apple moved to intel chips.

And remember thats also PR, I'm sure Apple make a 500 dollar Mac, and many people wouldn't call it a "piece of junk", heck a nettop with a atom chip in it would be a fine Mac, which could easily be under 500

If they can't make a $500 machine that's not a piece of junk, maybe they should look at design philosophies other than Ive's doctrine slimmer, prettier, less useful. It would be pretty easy to make a machine that's a much better buy than the mini while keeping design standards and being much smaller than SFF machines from the competition. Of course it would be a bit larger and we can't have that.

Hm. That's a pretty disappointing soundbyte from Steve Jobs that I somehow completely failed to notice.

I'm a fairly happy iMac owner but I started off with a Mac Mini and thought it was absolutely terrific. The BYODKM thing worked really well for me, and it still does as I sold it on to a friend and he loves it.

Sadly the iMac fails because of its quite frankly pants video card - the same applies to the 24" because the 8800GS just doesn't cut it either. I just can't bring myself to get a Mac Pro JUST to have decent (and upgradeable) graphics so my next step after the iMac might have to be a return to Wintel ownership. I love my iMac but just can't continue to suffer on specs simply because Apple are that arrogant that they can't acknowledge (or tap into) a potentially enormous seam of customer base.

It's a shame really.

haha...but that be crazy TALK :p

Its to bad, I think the market is to full of tower for users who don't need them, but there is without a question a place for them and I'd like to see Apple fill that place

Time to bump up this thread :) Mac Mini forever !

Seriously, I just saw the review of the Logitech Dinovo Edge for Mac, and it looks like the perfect match for the mini ! Small, fully-featured, includes a trackpad, should be nice with a Mini used as HTPC.
