EFI is the Extended Firmware Interface. It is not a file system but rather the interface between the hardware and the OS and "defrag" has absolutely nothing to do with EFI. Maybe you are thinking of HFS?

What you have on your Mac is HFS+, HFS could only handle up to 4 GB so that would be rather antique. Yes, it doesn't need defragmenting apps - first, HFS+ doesn't create as many fragments as other OSes in the first place, and second, it automatically defragments every file up to a certain size as you open it.

On the other hand, some people just _need_ the placebo effect of defragmenting.

EFI is not a file system. It is the Intel firmware replacement for the hardware BIOS. The Mac filesystem is HFS+. HFS+ does not need to be defragged by the user because the OS does it automatically.

You thought correctly. It is not needed in most cases. You also don't have to dust of the top or your 7-foot tall bookshelf if you don't want to. Some people do.
