... I always wondered though, for those users who don't or can't upgrade to a new version of 10.X, does Apple still work on revisions of older OS's. For example, when Leopard (or whatever it will be called) is finally released, and PowerPC Mac users for whatever reasons don't/can't upgrade and stick with 10.4 Tiger, will Apple still work on any bugs in that OS with 10.4.X updates?

i think they will fix any critical bugs with the system, and provide updates for compatibility with leopard, but they won't do any more major updates.

To be honest, the minute Leopard's release was pushed back, the fact there would be a 10.4.10 became as obvious as Britney Spears' lack of talent.

She might lack talent, but at least she's hot. Definitely a MILF, iMO.

As for the update, meh. If there are bugs in Tiger still, let's just hope Apple fixes them all and doesn't create new ones.

I think we all know now that this is not a decimal # so .10 != .1. In software, a lot of it has an x.y.z version number. x is a major revision where most of the code base has changed. Y is an upgrade which adds new features, but still mainly the same code base. Z is an update that has bug fixes and other stuff that doesn't really affect operation. So 10.4.10 would be the 10th revision of the Mac OS, 4th upgrade to Mac OS X and 10th update to 10.4. They can go up to 10.4.infinity if they wanted to. The periods just seperate the numbers, but that's it. They could have used an underscore or exclamation point if they wanted.

Maybe that will slow my iMac fans to less than 10m rpm.

And guzhogi, less preoccupation on numbering systems and more on the opposite sex and you might get your MILF ;)

Ah, my Tiger hasn't been put out to pasture just yet.

is that even the saying? I've only heard shards of it here and there :D

It'll not be a 10.4.10 update, but rather a "Core audio update", "Apple Mail 2.1.2" or a more specific update for the part that had a problem/bug.

Funny, I've always considered every new OS X version from Apple to be characteristic of a Service Pack. Leopard is simply going to be OS X SP5... :p

Ah, the first Britney Spears reference on Macrumors lol :p

First?!? You must be new here...

First of all, yes, it will definitely be called Leopard, no question there. Secondly, Apple usually caps development once a new OS is released. They did with Panther after Tiger was released, not releasing anything past 10.3.9. That being said, Security Updates and the like were (and still are) always made to work with previous versions and such, so it's not like they are completely abandoned - I still receive updates for my Panther machine. And FWIW, Leopard will support PPC architecture, so older Mac users won't be SOL.

It'll be 10.4.chicken_licken_the_sky_is_falling_OMGWTFBBQ!!! just you wait and see!

Who the hell is Chicken Licken? Any relation to Chicken Little?

:p

Apple is still releasing updates to Panther and I suspect a year after Leopard they will still be releasing Tiger updates.

Not version updates though, only security updates and the like. As I said, 10.3.9 (build 7W98) is the last version of Panther and it has been that way for over 2 years now - since mid-April '05 IIRC...

dudes you are all missing the point of this. What was the reason leopard was delayed? lack of software engineers i seem to remember? well mebe if they stopped farting around making 10.4.999992313100920391857 then they would have enough software developers to actually release leopard?

grr apple

Did they said they were using engineers to work on 10.4.10?
Maybe the guys from building facilities will be working on that update, they should be able to sweep all the bugs.

It's doomsday

I think we all kinda guessed it as soon as Leopard was delayed. There has to be an update for the Santa Rosa/LED/Warp 9.999 MacBook 1701-Pros... right? Or we not prepared to boldly go where no OS has gone before?

They can go up to 10.4.infinity if they wanted to.

As someone who has a degree in Math, let me please ask you to be more careful what you say! "Infinity" cannot be used as a number! Apple can, however reach "Lim(n -> Infinity) 10.4.n"

Plus if you wanted to truly go beyond the scope of the human imagination, you would say 10.4.[Power Set of Infinity] or better yet, the Infinitieth Power Set of Infinity.

For those of you unfamiliar with the power set, let me describe it as such:

A Simple Infinity is, for example, the set of integers... (1, 2, 7, -14, 42, etc.) and there are an infinite number of them. These are also known as a "Countable Infinity" because, as the name suggests, you can count them. The Power Set of Infitity is almost like a deeper dimension of Infinity. This is akin to the set of real numbers... (Pi, e, -14, 10.4, etc.) but between any two real numbers exists infinitely many more real numbers. For this reason, there are uncountably many real numbers. The Power Set of the Power Set of Infinity would then be a 2-dimensional Real Number system, where two points are separated by infinitely many real numbers in the 'x' direction and the 'y' direction.

Carry on with this until you reach the infinitieth Power Set of Infinity and you've successfully blown the minds of any who attempt to comprehend its magnitude.

...Sorry...

I had to offset the Britney Spears comments somehow...
