What are you smoking!?

OSX not for networking due to Windows compatibility? That's laughable, well for starters the fact that OS9 doesn't even support SMB is good for starters. 2) Not all networks are one mac and all PCs. 3) DAVE is available for OSX, which I've heard is MUCH better than the standard OSX Samba support. The only problems I've had is not being able connect two OSX-computers via a computer-computer Airport network. Although It's probably my fault anyway. Running OSX on TWO of my computers, and because whatever the default file-sharing for OSX seems buggy, I use it's new and improved AppleTalk functionality, besides it offers OS 8/9 compatibility.

10.1.1 & 10.2

Powerbook Wallstreet upgraded to a 466 MHZ

10.1.1 works flawlessly. Using 100% for work: connection needed for me is just ethernet and that one has no troubles for me. Being able to work (Unix & C++) locally on the Mac is just amazingly good.

The RagePro is not supported but the 2D acceleration works just fine: no lag in there to report.

AFS (using Arla) is a breeze and Wireless with Orinoco Gold card is effortless.

For Networking people has to wait 10.2 (Apple hardworking on it) but on the Apple discussions (have seen those? a must-see) there are lots of (working) solutions for most networking problems (and other). Also networking with NT and 2K PC is covered.

Sure, OS X is probably asking a bit more knowledge of computing than old OS but if you do have that knowledge or are willing to acquire it OS X finally makes Macs a *real* platform for serious work/applications. For the first time in my life I may work on the Mac (scientific field), not just writing papers and alike.

In due time (hopefully already with 10.2) it will be AGAIN the Mac so easy to use for casual users (not computers geeks) as well.

I'm aware of the OSX 10.2 project, but does anyone know any specific features? All I want is 3 things:
1) Software Base Station
2) A HID Key mapper
3) A Defrag tool.

Of course others probably want more performance, GUI skins, better Networking Support, a cleaner Connect to utility, more printer support ect.

Networks

I currently run two repro networks:
• Graphics & Admin - 354 Macs (G4s, Cubes, G3s, iBooks, Powerbooks)
• Sales and CSEs - 243 Windows Based PCs, (Mostly Dells and Compaqs)

I have been using OS X.11 on a Powerbook 667 and networking it to the PC and Macs no problem, even better when I got Dave.

Currently about 90% of the Macs are on OS 9.04, 9.1, 9.2 (QuickSilvers) and 9.21, but our archives, toast and distillers as well as Rips and admin machines are all running OS X.11 perfectly

Next December (2002) we aim to have all machines running OSX.

In my professional view, OS X.1 and X.11 is ready for almost all to use. There is VAST amounts of software and hardware available for it.

Ensign Paris,
Sounds like your expertize in Networking is greatly needed on the Apples discussion board regarding Networking OSX. There are hundred (I am not exagerating there are hundreds) of posts regarding difficulites networking with OSX.

Try this one.

OSX10.1 on an NT sp6 network.

Log on in SMB working and stable.

But SMB is not supported in classic so file opening/saving/ linking, through a classic app won't see the SMB log on

AFP log on is tempermental but now mostly stable. Can be seen by the Classic apps but if you Open/ close or link, the app. will crash.

No one on the discussion board has been able to help me with this. They are also having this problem. Most have got SMB working now but it is a very "un-Mac" way of working.

Here is another one for you.

Pagemaker 6.5 only works in the Admin password and will not work in any users passwords even if you give the user admin rights.

thanks for the help. Your expertise in networking is greatly needed in regards to this new Modern operating system.

Yeah networking sucks....

I moved to Apple 8 months ago and everything was perfect. Cool OS, even better computer, fantastic support for devices. I thought networking would be as easy, just click and play.

No way.

There has to be a fault and that is it. Nothing else is wrong for me, but running my machine on my home network or school network is like dying in slow motion. SMB works, if you know the name of the machine. Then if it disconnects by accident, Finder halts for a min. Great.

Airport is fantastic, that is true, but again not on a windows network. Even AppleTalk works once in a while and the so called local network shows my machine 8 times with none of the other macs on it.

Apple, we want it so make it!

yeah they haven't dropped the ball per se...they just really haven't picked the ball up until now. anyways third party proggies are working fine as much as i didnt want to have to go that route. from what i understand dave is good stuff. i use sharity and its a charm, no problems and out of the way.

blah i forgot the horrors of file Xfer on 10BaseT lol i just got a rude awakening over airport. anyways this is great stuff i am still nothing but happy...currently transferring some of my mp3s to be ready for my iPod next week hehehe.

one satisfied customer.

p.s. seahawk is right...its almost there. its so easy already but geeks like me can drop to a terminal and do some real damage :D GAWD i love rebooting my linux router from a terminal on the g4s at work lolololol

works for me

Try getting Dave for OS X.11, connected two Macs is as simple as pie, linking a Mac to a PC, (I tested a G4PB to a NT Service Pack 6 and WIN2K) worked ok, but was better with Dave.

Gu

but what about xp

a lot of us NT 4.0 techs are skipping w2k and winME and getting ready for the whole windows XP thing in the next year and i hope networking with OSX will be a reality...but who knows

everything the traditional windows techs learned may be different...even if it is just the huge change in the GUI appearance of windows which makes it a sqaure one issue with many of us

problem with install

The OS X update is great, except for one thing... If you happen to have your Mail program in the default directory, then when the update is installed, it writes over the Mail program with a directory named Mail. This directory is suppose to be a new beta of an impoved mail program, but Apple failed to make it a package. It isn't even complete enough for Project Builder to create a package with the contents. Good luck to all, and look out for those incomplete packages.

I'm amazed that there were no complaints when people were using OS9, but since Apple promised SMB in 10.1 everyone is angry that it's flawed. What the? OSX's support for SMB makes things like Dave easy to program, besides I'm sure Apple wants to polish the whole "connect to…" interface. The thing needs it's own thread because currently it stalls the finder.

My real issue with 10.1 came to my attention only recently. For whatever reason sometimes it doesn't power my mice on my iBook. This is really weird since it recognizes the device (Apple System Profiler). This and a key-only force quit should perfect OSX to a point where it's really solid.

...try this (worked with my pismo)

The DVD player in 10.1 is great but it's still nothing with out the abilty to watch DVDs on a T.V or monitor. I rather save money up for a iPod or Airport 2 than go by a DVD player.

1.shut down the PB and the TV
2.connect PB and TV
3. turn on TV and choose the right channel (AV)
4. press the ON button of the PB - AND CLOSE THE SCREEN !!
5. OS X will start on the TV
6. open the Screen and start the DVD Player

so it worked with mine...

A second reason for a not working DVD player could be that you have not choosen right settings for the (external )monitor = TV.
DVD Player needs 1024x768 and MILLIONS of colors otherwise DVD player will not work ! (under os 9 you got an error message - under X ....it just won´t work)

DVD

Is there a way to turn off the LCD and only use TV-out on a P92 iBook (IceBook). In OS9 I could just turn brightness to 0 and it worked. In OSXs this turns of f the TV-out. I'm thining of trying this technique, but It'll take a while before I get around to it.

DVD

I think same procedure which I described before (and which works with my Pismo) should work for the icebook.

when acting as described with my Pismo the LCD is OFF..

just try it...good luck

..networking via SMB FASTER !!!

installed yesterday the 10.1.1 Update and then connected my Pismo PB to my IBM Notebook as usual and downloaded some data (avi films, mp3s and so on)
It was 3 to 10 times faster then before the update - unbelievable :) - Only one thing which I have to mention...the back side of the medal is that the system crashes sometimes when downloading BIG files (600MB or so) - the only thing you can do then is to switch of the PB !!! :-(
what´s your experiences ???
