Apple seeded Mac OS X 10.3.3 7F38 on Thursday to developers. Key enhancements are said to include:

- network volumes are now available in the Finder sidebar and Desktop for convenient access
- improved file sharing and directory services for Mac (AFP), UNIX (NFS) and PC (SMB/CIFS) networks
- improved PostScript and USB printing
- improved font management
- updated Disk Utility, DVD Player, Image Capture, Mail and Safari applications
- iPods connected via USB 2.0 are now recognized by iTunes and iSync
- additional support for FireWire and USB devices
- new ATI and NVIDIA graphics drivers
- improved compatibility for third party applications
- FileVault, FireWire 800 and WebDAV improvements from Update 10.3.1
- previous standalone security updates and Bluetooth Update 1.5

Looks like a healthy update. It will probably be released to the public sometime next week. Too bad iPod at Home isn't on the list. :(

Wow, that's quite a nice little package. I'll take network and graphics updates anytime! And Safari and Mail too? Guess it won't be long now until it shows up in SU.

I'm stoked... it looks like tangible updates to me. I hate doing things like security updates and most other updates for that matter I guess. I rarely notice anything different. I'm always excited when they list programs I use in the update... although sometimes it's just background stuff that I'll probably never notice. Oh well...

Last night I turned off my iBook (which I normally don't do). I only turned it off because I had had it encoding video since Monday and I felt bad for the poor thing. So I let it rest.

iPod at Home??
Something that was mentioned on Apple's web site for Panther but never showed up and was removed from the web site. In short it let you store your home directory on your iPod and then you could log into your desktop by plugging your iPod into a Mac and logging in with your username/password....

Has anybody noticed that Mac software releases have been pretty much Blah!?!?!? Not just system software but everything!! I hope this sparks some new stuff, somewhere down the line.... I'm pretty bored on my Mac these days......

Now that sounds like a pretty cool idea. Like the sound of that.....although as I have never met another mac user in my life, not much need :(

maybe this will get the ball rolling for other updates....maybe even hardware updates.....people can dream you know......but only for so long...

So the description has the same details as 7F34? what was fixed or changed in 7F38?

The new graphics drivers are apparently 15-17% faster than those included with 10.3.2.

I agree with you. nothing special, nothing innovative. it's currently dull dull dull.

Can't wait for WWDC!!!

Size?

Does anybody know if this build increases/decreases the size? I think the last was around 65MB. Correct me if I'm wrong about that...

I've only got a 56K dial-up connection for DL's... :(

heh, one of the updates is that iTunes will recognize iPods plugged in with USB 2.0 :p

Personally, I think iDisk should work a little better when you don't have it stored locally. It seems like it's killing Finder when you're using it, even on a T1 connection. If you scroll too much it often requires a Finder relaunch. not everytime or anything, but i mean compared to the overal Mac experience, using iDisk kinda lags behind

How is this different from the way network volumes are currently available in the Finder sidebar and Desktop?

This sounds like a hefty update. Even more improved graphics drivers? Great! I hope the networking instabilities get fixed. I can't wait.

aha i think the change will allow you to put an alias of your network drive in your sidebar. right now, the volumes only appear after you log on. you can't simply drag them to the sidebar to save them for one-click access.

10.3.3 7F38 is just under 70MB

Panther 10.3.3 as a whole OS in CD

I wonder that when they do release this latest build, if they will put it out to CD like in the past and replace those initial 10.3. The reason I ask is I'm still using Jaguar and it would be a drag to buy the Panther and go thru the updates one by one after changing the OS.

Besides, wasn't the initial Panther release buggy?

Mail problems?

"updated Disk Utility, DVD Player, Image Capture, Mail and Safari applications"

Has anyone else had problems with email since the last update to 10.3? Windows colleagues no longer can open my Office documents, although they could before the last update. My workaround is to zip them first. Sometimes they say two documents come (Mac's invisible companion files and some kind of MIME conflict?), but in call cases they cannot open them any more.

That would be a nice feature. I'd download and install the update just for that (I use network drives quite a bit; any improvements there are welcome).

Are you referring to the OS? Because I think the iLife apps have been great. Garageband is fantastic. What type of things were you looking for?

That's probably them seeing the data fork and resource fork as separate files. Did you try checking "send Windows-friendly attachments" under Attachments in the Edit menu of Mail.app?
