i have all our servers in the dock for easy one click access using jaquar. you cant do that in panther with the window side pane?
I think the issue is that you can currently only return to the most recently used server via an alias. After I connect to a second server, the alias to the first server (in my dock) no longer works until I reconnect again through the "Connect to Server" command.

Hopefully this update will allow permanent aliases.

System updates are good, usually.

Besides this revision is required for the g5 powerbooks.

Ha! We'll be at 10.5 before you see a G5 Powerbook. :D

Apple seeded Mac OS X 10.3.3 7F38 on Thursday to developers. Key enhancements are said to include:

- network volumes are now available in the Finder sidebar and Desktop for convenient access

* NICE

- improved file sharing and directory services for Mac (AFP), UNIX (NFS) and PC (SMB/CIFS) networks
- improved PostScript and USB printing
- improved font management
- updated Disk Utility, DVD Player, Image Capture, Mail and Safari applications
- iPods connected via USB 2.0 are now recognized by iTunes and iSync
- additional support for FireWire and USB devices
- new ATI and NVIDIA graphics drivers

*EXCELLENT. Looks like they have recognised the desire for more options and power

- improved compatibility for third party applications
- FileVault, FireWire 800 and WebDAV improvements from Update 10.3.1

* FIREVAULT so cool but is pretty damn scary if it goes tits up. I am not sure how they can convince me to use it...

- previous standalone security updates and Bluetooth Update 1.5

* NICE to see they are bundling things up

Has anyone else had problems with email since the last update to 10.3? Windows colleagues no longer can open my Office documents, although they could before the last update. My workaround is to zip them first. Sometimes they say two documents come (Mac's invisible companion files and some kind of MIME conflict?), but in call cases they cannot open them any more.

Yes, I had some problems with attachments sent by mail. I figured that checking 'send windows compatible' in the attachment dialog fixes that.
When simply draggin and dropping into the mail it can cause problems.

As it turns out, zipping files also strips them of their resource forks, which explains why zipping files before sending them works like it does.

FYI, zipping does not necessarily strip resource forks. If you use the "Create Archive" contextual menu item in the Finder, it preserves the resource forks in the zip archive it creates. MacZip and Stuffit also preserves them. It may be that they transparently do a MacBinary flattening on the file first, but still it is possible to maintain resource forks in zip files.

I don't know what happens if you use gzip on the command line, that may not work correctly. And of course if you use a zip program on some other platform, like Linux or PC, then it probably won't preserve them.

Just got word from someone that 10.3.3 will be coming next week.
I cant confirm anything, but he seemed very confident!

Lets go hunt the bugs! :D

I forgot about those; anyway, I read somewhere that the zipping process strips resource forks unless the resource fork is stripped from the original file and zipped separately, then reassembled by a program that understands resource forks (Windows zip programs obviously won't do this). Therefore resource fork preservation in zip archives is essentially a hack.

Heh... Pretty much any dev seed means that the official release will be coming out the next week, as long as there are no major problems ;)

I just zipped a couple of PS1 fonts (LaTeX) with Stuffit 8.0.2 in Panther, after unzipping them, all them were labelled unix executables. Strange, next time I use .sitx for such special files like fonts.

Various sources are saying that the new powermacs rely on updates from 10.3.3. This is because the new powermacs will use the RadeonXTs, so new graphics drivers are obviously needed. When the new patch comes out, new powermacs will not be far behind!

I'm almost at the point where I think I *need* a Powermac. The biggest thing I want is faster Superdrives!! The ones right now are soooooo slow. :(

When you browse the network and log-in to a remote computer, there is no icon on the desktop. The main problem is, how do you eject / put away the network connection, or how do you know if you are still connected.

But when I use apple script to log-in the icon does appear on the desktop.

Don't use StuffIt to make zips, just Control-click the file or folder you want to zip and choose Create Archive. It'll preserve all the Mac-specific stuff.

Whack in a Pioneer DVR-106 (native 4x burning in Panther) or a DVR-107 (8x burning, works in Panther with an easy hack - supposedly native in 10.3.3, possibly indicating this drive will be used in PowerMac G5 revisions).

For a Rev A. Powerbook 17", update the firmware to go from 1x to 2x burning.

No new Mac purchase necessary!

sounds like this will be quite a good update. lets hope they've got all the bugs ironed out, or at least the big ones. :p

I agree. To be safe though, I think I will wait a while till it has been tested by some of the experts here on the forum. Their approval means a lot.

Yeah but do you think theres an essance of a chance you could like contact apple to say you are willing to help out and get an update sent to you, think i heard they do similar thigns with beta testers on game formats.

There is something called the AppleSeed program, in which they seed pre-release software to fairly normal end-users (as opposed to developers [members of the ADC]). I can't recall anyone on a forum ever admitting to being an AppleSeed participant--either there aren't very many of them or they sign a pretty serious NDA (or maybe both). Also, last I checked Apple wasn't seeking any new participants. I would like to be one of them, though... :)

In Panther, there are two ways to connect to network shares. The 1st way (the way I always do it, and apparently you as well) is to use Go -> Connect to Server, and give it a URL, or choose from a list of recent/favorite servers. This will place the network share you just logged into on the sidebar and/or on your desktop, depending on the way you have your Finder Preferences set. The other way to connect to a server is to browse the network using the handy dandy Network icon in the sidebar. The results are currently somewhat unmaclike in that once you connect to a server, there is no obvious way to disconnect from the server, short of logging out of the local system, or pulling your network plug. Interestingly, if you Change out a couple of the terms*, Windows works in the exact same way.

My interpretation of the new feature, is that when you connect to a server from the Network icon, the server will show up on the sidebar/Desktop just like if you had connected using the Go menu. This would make me happy, and i'd probably even use the browsing method more often if that was the case.

*the terms to replace are Go -> Connect to Server with Right click on My Network Places and chose Map Network Drive, and handy dandy Network icon with My Network Places

It does look like a nice feature if thats the way it works.

I sent a "Windows-friendly attachment" (just a picture) with an email to my mum's PC and she couldn't open it. So I always make sure I DON'T check the box.

10.3.3 sounds so good. And the OS is already so good. I really like Panther and the way Apple is developing it. Hopefully the fix should stop the Finder from crashing or hanging for ages when browsing networks. And yet another Safari update?

To ^, there is both a Safari and WebCore update in the 10.3.3 release :)

I'm hoping it comes this Tuesday, I'm getting a little impatient!
I also hope it fixes the Finder crashing when you drag a load of pictures on the desktop when icon preview is enabled. That's bloody annoying.
As I keep saying, I'm really really glad it sorts out application launch time problems caused with 10.3.2. Safari used to open in one bounce, now it's three :(

I wouldn't on my G4. We do have a spare iBook that I would be willing to be a beta tester.
