I'm guessing the people who's orders are already shipping live in the middle of nowhere. You shouldn't worry if yours hasn't shipped because it will probably simply take less time to get there. They have to stagger the shipment dates so that they all arrive on the 24th.

I don't think it's this organised: I live ~40 mins from one store (Westfarms) and I got Jag the day before its official release. I didn't order it particularly early either.

Re: No .edu Panther at the Apple Store

Sethypoo,

A few words of warning. I called the Apple Store the day Jaguar was released, and they told me I could buy the .edu Jaguar. I waited in line, picked up a copy, and said I wanted the educational discount.

That is where my purchase came to a screeching halt. I talked to the manager of the store, and apparently, you can buy discounted educational hardware, but not software.

With hardware, the product is all the same, regardless of discounts. However, with software the .edu version of OS X is a separate product, in a separate sales channel.

So unless things have changed in the last year, buy it online and save yourself a trip...

I've purchased both hardware and software on the education discount at the Apple Store here. They just made a copy of the teacher's ID and driver's license, filled out a form and done deal. That was over this past summer.

So either it has changed, or one of the two stores screwed up.

Best bet, call ahead and check before you make the trip (I ordered mine on the web this time, just because I had other things to do that night and still want it when I get home).

Panther...

All throughout the beta seeds, I performed an "Archive and Install" with the "Preserve Users" option checked. This way, it installs a new System, archives the old one, and keeps your user folder in tact. You won't get the "cleanness" you would if you erased the HD and did a clean install, but it's much better than doing an upgrade, which in my experience, always leads to problems.

And I can second the info that trying to buy Panther with your education discount at the Apple retail Stores isn't going to happen. You can only use the discount on hardware, not software at the Retail stores. Either find a Authorized Campus reseller, or buy it online.

Why, Why did my iBook die last week?

I'll have Panther this Friday and nothing to install it on. AHHHHHHH! I won't get my iBook back before next week. Anyone got a G5 they can loan me?

Calling all MA mac fans

Which Apple store will the MA people be at on Friday night? I want to know so I can go to the other one (and thus raise my chances of winning a prize :D )

The following is an email I got from someone who works at Apple in response to someone else's query. (I am on the Mac users' mailing list at UVA).

With your educational institution photo ID and driver's license you can
get education-channel pricing at the retail stores.

I think it has changed actually... I remember them specifically telling a teacher in the Apple Store last year that she could get her ibook there, but that her Office and reduced Keynote had to come from the online store.

But then, less than a month ago, my mom was desperate and went there, ready to pay full price, and they just photocopied her faculty ID and gave her the software for the EDU price.

They've either changed the rules, or they are inconsistant in how they enforce them.

Both of these examples were from the same Apple Store.

Kids in a candy store

Geeze, you guys are like kids in a candy store....this is computer software isn't it? LOL, I am the cautious type, I will wait till everyone finds all the bugs, then in a month or so get a copy. I need not be the first on the block with new software. New hardware is another point all together, but overall let everyone else find all the problems first, then you can join the party.

:D

no love for me yet

Mine still hasn't shipped yet -- darn you MacRumors for getting me so excited this early in the morning! Now I'll have to check my order status every few hours, instead of daily like before ....

I don't mean to second guess Serpicolugnut, but can confirm this installation route to be save? I have no way of backing up data to do a clean installation.

Do any of the Powerbook owners whose registrations slipped in and got the free UtD received shipping notices?

I got a notification yesterday that my UtD order was on hold due to a problem with my credit card. I know this is not really the case since the same credit card also has three orders of edu-discounted Panther on it, and I haven't received any notification about that. I am supposed to call Apple today to find out what's going on, but I'm guessing they're onto the fact that I didn't purchase my powerbook after Oct. 8 (though my serial number was accepted on the UtD purchase page).

I'll post again in a few hours, after I've talked with Apple.

I bought panther 20$ (powerbook upgrade) first when i ordered, they told me it will charge me the shipping wich they does first but today i check my order and they remove shipping charges and upgrade my shipping with 2 days shipping.

Friday is the day !!!!!!!!!

I ordered mine the day it was announced. it is still in "open" status. est. ship on or before 10/24. Is that an estimated departure or arrival?

I ordered an up-to-date version with my Powerbook... and although not recieving a shipping notification yet.. my shipping has been upgraded to 2-day.

Maybe most orders will be sent tomorrow?

I did check my online status though, and it seems my shipping was changed to 2-day... though I paid for overnight.

I also got the educational discount, perhaps that has something to do with it?

...

Well I called apple this morning. Apparently they don't know why my shipping was changed to 2 day, and they changed it back for me over the phone. Couldn't tell me when it would ship though. Oh, and for those of you wondering, I ordered through the educational online store.

Blah.

Just checked the status again, now it says "Standard Overnite", although still not shipping.
