If you ordered Panther using the G5 up to date program, how do you know when it will ship? Is there an order tracking site?

It should be just the normal Apple Store. It is for my up-to-date. But for you extra special G5 people, maybe you're too important for our order tracking site. Elitists.

Just kidding. And I loved your G5 pics :)

At 5:50 Eastern I just tried to check my order status from the US site, it's down too, I just get an error message.

Darn...any idea as to what's going on?
Server is also down in Canada, unable to check status or place an order.
Perhaps we are all overloading the servers with checks on est delivery??

Yeah but how about when the FedEx guy gets there in the morning before you go to work, Shaaaazammmm. You've gotta love that, it happened with my new PB. Need less to say, I didn't get much work done tht day.

And for those people that insist on complaining to Apple about your 1 day shipping, their goal is to get the package to you by friday, so if you keep the 1 day, they're just going to ship it later. A smart person that has been bumped down from 1 day to 2 day would ask for an adjustment in shipping costs.

I'd say a smart person should have chose Ground Shipping to begin with.:D

Probably from the steam-era idiom to "pull out all the stops", to go as fast as possible, to eschew timidity.

Or, perhaps, to be as loud as possible on a steam-powered organ...:)

Has anyone from Canada received these notices??

I live about 5 mins away from apple canada and my UTD order status said on or before 10/21/3002 but was still "open" last time I checked. However now the Canadain store order status like many others is down.

Thats cool though since my G5 came with Panther, hehe.

Thank you Phil!

I will check the order tracking site.

Yes. It has been opined here and elsewhere that perhaps this is a result of the massive number of hits it is receiving from eager Panther customers. But I have a hard time believing a few overenthusiastic geeks are overloading the system. Rather, I prefer to think that so many Panther shipments are being processed right now that they had to take the system offline while they update all the orders.

Hey, I can hope. ;)

OT: PHIL'S SITE

Phil, I had such a fun time browsing your site!!

SO many great quotes.

I like this one: "I don't exactly deny the existence of a god. I don't deny the existence of Klingons either."

Thanks! It's feedback like that that encourages me to keep working on it!

By the way, have you signed my petition yet?

No proof of a negative is probably also why Gbush is able to keep up his pretense about you know what in you know where....

I signed the petition! YOU DESERVE A MERCEDES!

Here we go with another delay. I just got an email from Apple letting me know that my on or before 10/21/2003 has now been pushed back to 10/24/2003.:(

Dear Apple Customer
We appreciate your recent purchase from the Apple Store. Due to an unexpected delay, we now anticipate shipping the following item(s) as follows

M9231LL/A, MAC OS X PANTHER 10.3 FULFIL/UTD-USA will now ship on or before 10/24/2003 We regret any inconvenience this delay may cause.

Looks like you may be disappointed then. The fine print for the .Mac renewal offer clearly stated that the $20 credit cannot be used in conjunction with educational pricing. We thought about using it for an educational purchase of Panther, but saw this in the fine print, so we opted for The Sims instead. Unfortunately the only other things we needed recently at the Apple Store were $19 cables, and the $20 discount also doesn't cover shipping/tax, so it was no good for those either.

Re: pc program in panther?

I just started with a new web server. It allows us to update things online with asp databases, etc. Anyways. I'm a mac user and the interface dosen't show up right on my computer. I have a G5 and VirtPC would not work on it. So I called the company and asked about whether they were trying to make their stuff online compatible with macs. The reply I got back said that they understood that the new mac OS that was coming out, 10.3, was going to have a program WITH it that could run PC programs. The email was fairly vaige, as I am sure whatever info she got from Apple was even more vaige. Anyways, are there any rumors like this that there is some kind of PC app running on the mac platform out there?

There was an early article about Panther in the last month or so that mistakenly gave the impression that Virtual PC or similar technology was included with Panther. I forget who published it, but it showed up on the rumor sites before the publisher quickly clarified that it was a mistake. That's probably where they got it.

Unfortunately G5s are probably out of luck until Microsoft fixes Virtual PC for them. Who knows how long that might take??

Re: clean install question

I'm just wondering - to do a clean install do you just have to pop in the CD and select an option for clean install? Or Are you supposed to format the hard disk before you install the program? If so - how would you go about formatting the hard disk?

I haven't seen the Panther install yet, but either you will be given a choice of installation types, or there will be a Customize button at some point in the process. Don't be afraid to push that button and choose the option that fits you best!

I'd say for most people, Archive/Install is the way to go. You get a nice clean install of the OS, but you don't lose all your data and settings.

In addition, before you format your hard disk, do you have to deauthorize your itunes music and then authorize it again after the clean panther install?

That's a good point! Regardless of which install method you use, it would be a very good idea to backup /Users/Shared/SC Info. This is where iTunes authorization is stored. If you really want to be ultra-safe, you could deauthorize too, and just reauthorize after the install. But backing up and restoring the SC Info folder should also work.

For those planning to Attend in MA

I just called the Apple Store CambridgeSide....

I asked "What time should I arrive at the store Friday Night?"

The Guy said for the Jaguar Release @ the Store, the line went all the way down past the cheesecake factory.... Now for those who have been to the Galleria, knows that is a very long line.

I'm planning on arriving around 6pm... shouldn't be too bad around then considering people will be getting out of work around that time...

Wouldn't it be nice to come in with nothing, and leave with Panther and a iMac or G5!?!? Only Time Will Tell!!

Night of the Panther is Approaching!

Hi,

I am a UK Apple Reseller, and we received all of our stocks yesterday morning. I was as suprised as you guys, considering the Friday launch. I was expecting stocks to arrive on Friday, or after the event, just like the Jaguar event.

Anyhow, installation is a breeze. Just run the installer and it senses you already are running 10.2 and it does an upgrade. Takes around 40ish minutes to run. Doesn't ask for CD#3. First impressions are the speed it now makes my Powerbook 12 run at. Very impressive. Next I installed it onto a G4 400 and had problems, the installer said there was an error with the install, try again. I tracked this down to be a disc error on the hard drive, so Norton 8 fixed that, and then Panther installed fine. The G4 400 is now much zippier than before...

I'll be playing some more today, just getting ready for Friday :)
