It's just that when I set up a new computer I like to start with as clean a system as possible. If I install 10.6.3 I won't have to install all the little incremental updates that have been released since 10.6.2. It just seems cleaner...

Steve.

I don't like to do the delta updates either, but ...

I always download the combo update and run that. I save it on my hard drives... so I can go from system 10.6.0 to 10.6.x whenever.

When I download the new combo update, I trash the previous one I'd been saving on my drive.

The problems I have been experiencing: The eject button on the menu bar disappears after restarting my Mac or turning it off and turning it on the next day, The Weather Widget glitch, my Airport Express Time Out hang and when inserting a CD and once iTunes finds the track and you say no when asking if you want to rip the CD the CD disappears. But I believe the iTunes problem is separate comparing to what a Mac OS update is all about. One other problem I still have is Kernel PANICS. OMG! I hate when things crash because of a Kernel.

I am hoping this update will come today.

I always get confuse with this, instead of the auto update you download the the Combo Update from apple site? I was wondering if I can do that. Obviously through auto update you don't get combo, only time you get combo through auto update if your just installing Snow Leopard or reinstalling.

I guess we can forget about this being released today. Damn...

I have a brand new 27" i5 iMac, bought yesterday, stood doing nothing. I have installed Snow Leopard, iLife, and iWork; copied my files from my old iMac into Documents/Pictures/etc; I have even copied across the .dmg files of the apps I want to install...

However, I was really hoping the next step would be to install 10.6.3, then run software update and get everything up to date, then go through the Preferences Pane and get everything as I want it, then set up all my apps...

Poo.

Steve.

You don't need to install the OS or iLife on a new Mac. New Macs should be unboxed, plugged in, and they just work. You didn't unbox your new Mac, and install from the Snow Leopard disk as if the hard disk were blank; did you?

Upgrading from 10.6.2 is not cleaner than starting with 10.6.3.

What's the difference? Just use your computer now. Updating doesn't change anything to your apps 99% of the time.

Yes, yes. I know it seems ridiculous, but that's the way it is.

I always reinstall the OS when I buy a new Mac. I don't necessarily want the install options they have chosen for me. For example, I only install in English and don't install all the language translations...

Steve.

If it follows the timeline of Leopard wasn't it about 3 months from 10.5.2 to 10.5.3?

It seems like with Leopard and now Snow Leopard the first couple of updates came quick to fix the big early bugs.

Well, you're right about one thing:

Ridiculous!

If you've got nothing better to do, have fun with your redundant installations.

Besides the extra languages, what are the other reasons that you do what you do?

You could use Monolingual to delete the languages you don't need.

I'm starting to feel a bit John Merrick. I was born this way, can't you accept me?

Here's the thing:

I've spent a lot of money on my new mac. more than I can really afford, if truth be told, but I'm fine with it because using my Mac is my main hobby. Expensive as it is, I'll get three good years out of it...

I take care of my stuff. Think of it a bit like waxing a car. Pointless. It makes me feel I'm being really careful and taking good care...

And it's not completely without foundation. People often say (and MacRumors forums can take responsibility for a large part of my OCD) that combo updates are better. Well, I'm waiting for the combo update. I want this Mac to be the best it can possibly be.

And in my defence (as I know I sound like a bit of a psycho), I am also waiting for a UPS to be delivered as the electricity supply around these parts is a bit flakey. I'd kind of like to get that plugged in before I mess around with the new computer too much. My last iMac's HDD died (I think) because of frequent, momentary, power cuts.

So why are people so anxious for 10.6.3. Is apple adding new functionality or just bug fixes. SL has been very stable for me and while Its great to see a major bug fix, Having a number of threads pop up lately about this seems to indicate folks are anxious for it

While most people don't have issues with Snow Leopard, many who does have issues are usually specific or use the Mac different from other people. For example, a lot of users have issues with sharing with Windows computers (Samba) but majority of users don't use Samba. So it seem like SL is very stable to them but to Samba users, it isn't.

For me, my macbook pro since 10.6.1 has issues waking up on the first try. Every time I try to wake up my laptop, my monitor goes into a power saving loop, it wakes up and then sleeps. The laptop doesn't wake either, so it would take me 5 wake up attempts from keyboard/mouse to get it to wake up. (external monitor, with closed lids).

A lot of people repeat what they hear. And, if the first person who initiated a rumour didn't know what he was talking about, all of the hypochondriacs spreading the rumour are clueless.

And, when 10.6.4 is released, you'll want the cleanest system. So, rather than installing an update, you'll probably sell your Mac and buy a new one that comes with 10.6.4. Right?

I hope, for your sake, not.

Make sure that you hold up your left hand during the first boot up. Doing so helps to amplify the signal reception of the Airport card.

I'm kidding. Please don't spread this rumour.

Or do spread the rumour. I'll take credit for punking the hypochondriacs of the Mac world.

Shall I take the bait? Shall I? Nah...

Consider me punked. You the man.

There's nothing stopping you doing a combo update from 10.6.2 to 10.6.3 when the time comes. The end result is exactly the same as having done it from 10.6.0.

It seems like we are not going to get any updates today, too soon to tell if there is going to be any updates this week. Who Knows? Anything can happen though.:(

Hopefully it's released soon. I've seen many problems with Quartz Composer, both as a user (literally the app just crashed) and as a developer.

Maybe they're just waiting to release the update alongside the new MBP's as it may contain something specific to the new notebooks, But who knows

Next week I guess. Although if they are waiting for the new MB/P revisions, then it won't be coming until after mid-March.
