MacStories reports that it has received word that Apple will be releasing Mac OS X 10.6.5 and iTunes 10.1 via Software Update tomorrow, with iOS 4.2 set to follow on Friday. The report comes, however, from a "source working close with AT&T", and carrier representatives are frequently sources of incorrect information, so some caution is warranted.
According to our source, 10.6.5 completed the certification stage a few hours ago and iTunes was ready 3 weeks ago - likely after the release of beta 2 to developers.
The golden master version of iOS 4.2 was released to developers early last week, but it appears that a public release has been waiting for Apple to complete work on Mac OS X 10.6.5, which is required to support certain aspects of iOS 4.2's AirPrint functionality. iTunes 10.1 is similarly required to support AirPlay streaming functionality. Consequently, it seems that Mac OS X 10.6.5 and iTunes 10.1 should appear before or at the same time as iOS 4.2.

Apple just yesterday seeded Build 10H574 of Mac OS X 10.6.5 to developers.

Claims from a pair of German sites over the weekend had suggested that an iOS 4.2 launch could come either today or on Friday, but it appears that there will be no such launch today, as Apple's iOS releases typically occur around 10:00-11:00 AM Pacific Time.

No upgrade for me

Unless they address screwing up the iPad rotation lock-switch, they can choke on the upgrade. I'm not trading one flick of a switch for 5 gestures. That's not an upgrade - that's self-abuse.

My proximity sensor was never fixed on my iPhone 4 on the last update. Anyone else still having issues? Thought was to be fixed <_<

So you'd rather wade through page after page of apps instead of getting folders with the new upgrade? I figure having folders would save me a lot more time than the two seconds more it will now take to lock the rotation. And I maybe use that switch once or twice a day (if that). I'd use folders constantly.

Yup. Looking forward to 4.2 on the iPad. Folders here we come. As for the screen lock, I'd rather have it be a mute switch. I rarely use screen lock and don't mind getting to it through the MT bar.

I, in fact, hope this is not true and that they release it sooner. Really not fair for us iPad users to still be on iOS 3.2

Why is this source being considered reliable?

MacStories has no track record whatsoever on this kind of Apple Rumors and it's written by an italian guy based in Italy. What kind of reliable sources may he have at At&T that are not completely based on internet buddy-ness?

I'm really hoping they're right of course, but I was just wondering about the way MR selects the publications they give credit to.

5 Gestures?
double tap home button,
scroll to the left,
hit screen lock.
seems ok to me, not that I ever use the rotation lock

I currently running the 4.2 GM and it's NICE. No major issues despite how little RAM is in there causing so much concern for so many. Very smooth with multitasking, folders, and battery life is good too.

Enjoy when it comes out.

I have two suggestions for you:

1) Suck it up and find something worthwhile to be outraged about.

OR

2) Have fun being a martyr on 4.1. You'll be missing out on a bunch of great new features. Sooner or later none of your apps will work properly.

1 Gesture - Switch
Four Gestures - Double Tap, Scroll, Hit Button

Complete waste.

Why is everyone so against having choice? Why not set that to be a toggle for you mute guys who love SJ more than life, or leave it the way it is.

I do prefer the rotation lock switch to changing it in the task tray. It's faster and when I need it then it's usually when I need it fast. We already have a fast mute by holding down the volume rocker. It still does the fast mute even in GM.
