5 Gestures?
double tap home button,
scroll to the left,
hit screen lock.
seems ok to me, not that I ever use the rotation lock

You forgot about having to click the home button again after touching the rotate lock icon. So, technically, he's right. It's five painstakingly excruciating actions!

(click + click) + swipe + touch + click

Apple will never be able to position the iPad as a productivity tool again! All of these lost seconds will never fly in the enterprise environment.

P.S. - That was all sarcasm, in case it wasn't obvious.

Yup. Looking forward to 4.2 on the iPad. Folders here we come. As for the screen lock, I'd rather have it be a mute switch. I rarely use screen lock and don't mind getting to it through the MT bar.

Folders are the must-have feature for iPad. It's laborious having a bunch of screens to scroll through. Fortunately, the iPad allows for 20 apps per folder. I really like that.

BTW, roland, check your pm's.

My proximity sensor was never fixed on my iPhone 4 on the last update. Anyone else still having issues? Thought was to be fixed <_<

4.1 update fixed my iphone 4 prox sensor issue. If you have a problem still, probably need to make appointment with genius bar.

I like choice with lots of things. This is not a big deal to me though. I have locked the rotation only a handful of times since buying my iPad. But, I mute it often and find it annoying that I have to hold the volume button for a couple seconds to return it to full volume after muting. So, to me, having the switch become a mute switch is a win.

I wasn't trying to start anything with my original reply. Just being a smart ass.

1 Gesture - Switch
Four Gestures - Double Tap, Scroll, Hit Button

Complete waste.

Why is everyone so against having choice? Why not set that to be a toggle for you mute guys who love SJ more than life, or leave it the way it is.

Your choice of things to get all footsie stomping about is fascinating.
But having a pathological hatred of a CEO explains a lot.

Airprint

What does 10.1 bring to the table exactly?

Primarily - Airprint support for Windows.

10.1 gives windows the airprint functionality.

10.6.5 & 10.1 gives Mac users the same thing.

I believe some Airplay functionality is also implemented.
I know that AppleTV's only do sound right now with AirPlay - they will likely need updating to do video. The same may be true for Macs.

2) Have fun being a martyr on 4.1. You'll be missing out on a bunch of great new features. Sooner or later none of your apps will work properly.

It's actually worse than that - the iPad is currently on 3.2, so they are prepared to forego folders, multi-tasking, AirPrint, AirPlay and improved performance because Apple have re-purposed the switch...

Unless they address screwing up the iPad rotation lock-switch, they can choke on the upgrade. I'm not trading one flick of a switch for 5 gestures. That's not an upgrade - that's self-abuse.

Why make such a big deal out of something so small? If it's that much of a problem, jailbreak it!

LOL u will upgrade...plus a jailbreak will fix this issue...

It would be better if you could choose what the switch was used for, but it's hardly a big deal. If Apple had implemented this solution first, no one would care because it works just fine.

Really, the original iPad design was to have the button act as a mute button.
However, the software rotation lock was part of 4.0 which wasn't ready at the time of release. The switch was changed to rotation lock as a short term fix.

I've used the lock under 4.2 and it's really not that big a pain. The bonus of easily accessible brightness and sound via the "multi-tasking bar" more than makes up for the loss of the button as rotation lock.

Folders rock too.

Choice means complexity. Complexity means bugs. One control, one function.
Makes sense to me as a designer.

We got people still harping on the proximity issue? Wow people do not know how to go to an apple store and get a exchange? If there is not apple store near you...go to an ATT store, or send it in for an exchange. Why suffer on this problem?

You have a 1 year warranty....use it....

I would actually argue that had Apple implemented the switch as a normal mute switch, with IOS 4.0 that would reveal that the switch is now magically a screen rotation lock switch and you goons would eat it up.

You're going to agree with Apple no matter what and that is a huge problem.

No, I'm not trolling. I like Apple alot, but it gets tiring to see user who do not like choice and love to bend over and take it.

Funny, I was thinking that 10.6.5 and iTunes 10.1 would come a few days before ios 4.2

iTunes 10.1 is required to use iOS 4.2

If you upgrade your iPhone or iPad to 4.2 - iTunes 10.0 won't recognize the device properly.

10.6.5 is unrelated to these other two - except 10.6.5 is required for Macs to do AirPrint. I haven't tried 10.6.5 yet and thus not tried AirPrint either.

after running the GM of iOS4.2 safari is snappier.
But then I did do a restore. and set up from scratch

This is what I am gonna do...a restore to factory settings and install 4.2 and then restore from backup and then put my apps back on it one by one...

Why do people always scream "choice", it's like the android lover who just quote/say "openness" with no real backup! Bro, in the scheme of your life, if it no longer being a screen orientation lock bothers you that much, then why not just dump the device for something that gives you that one tiny desire???

Most folks, can't afford iPads, yet you can, and enjoy it, and are complaining about an orientation lock button....
