Yeah, 3.5 weeks to qualify for a 10$ upgrade is kind of pissing me off. I waited quite a while to get the top of line laptop so I'd get a relatively free upgrade of the OS.

I emailed Stevey boy my discontent, not that it will likely make much difference but then again that's how the iPhones customers got thier refund from what I understand.

I just bought a MacBook on the 8th from FutureShop (im in Canada).

I went ahead and paid the $9.95 to have Leopard shipped to me.

I went for the free shipping and it says Ships by: October 26th & Allow 8 business days after shipping date.

Wow, I was getting all ready to complain about Apple cheating the Canadian users by overpricing the software based on our exchange rate.

Imagine my surprise to discover its priced at $129 CDN!

Way to go Apple! You're being fairer than our own retailers.

I am new to the world of Apple, but I have an iMac and a mac mini in the other room. Can I buy one copy and put it on both? I mean, I am not a family, I am me and me alone. Or is it just simply, I must by a copy for each of my computers period? I figure some of you might know from you Tiger upgrading days.

Thanks.

Dammit and dammit.

My MacBook Pro shipped Sept 22nd, nine days too early for the upgrade. And I'm a university student, so $69 didn't seem too bad if I missed the $9.95 window.

Sigh. I guess it's Tiger for me for a while still. Strange how Microsoft is always knocked for Windows pricing being so bad, yet Mac OS educational only has an 11% discount now and Windows has a 200% discount (I got two copies of Vista Business Edition for free, completely legally from my department at school.)
That's not an educational discount, it's a teacher/student pack that your school purchased. They allow for multiple installs, similar to Apple's Family Pack.

Speaking of the Family Pack, I'm disappointed about how many ppl are advocating misusing this in order to fraudulently get 10.5 cheaper. The EULA and the info posted on the web for the Family Pack specifically state that it allows for up to 5 installations on computers owned by members of a single family living in the same residence. It does not apply to friends, co-workers or schoolmates. If this is abused in the same way as Edu pricing was, then we will likely see a substantial increase in the price of the Family Pack in the future.

Just thought of this but people sad about the education hike could just find two friends to go in with together on a family pack (ends up being about $69 before tax).

Probably not completely what Apple has in mind for "family" but college students get pretty close :p

Or you could just buy one copy and let everyone bootleg it.

The $69 low price point made it worth a purchase. At $113, more people are apt to just steal it outright instead, if for no other reason, the huge price jump being seen as a slap in the face.

They cut iPods discounts outright, then lowered the iWork/iLife discount to a pathetic $9, and now this.

Come on Steve, you have enough damn money.

Legally, you need to buy a family pack.

Technically, no, there's zero copy protection on OSX. No keys or activation or any of that nonsense.

several thing

People are saying that they are getting the upgrade discount if you bought your laptop in late august? I bought mine on August 31st, and i have contacted apple and they say that the cutoff date is october 1st as stated. who is reporting this and do you have any suggestions on how to qualify?

also those who are saying they contacted their apple store rep for educational discounts, how did you find that number? is it a person at your university? Also more dtails and clarification on that one!

matt

Are you kidding?

Increase price of Family Pack -> even less people buy Family Pack -> Apple uses CD key in Mac OS

the biggest disappointment is the low-cost upgrade window - a shooddy few weeks? what happened to months?!

Months only existed in the unrealistic hopes and dreams of some consumers. In fact, this is easily the most generous up-to-date program Apple's ever offered on a release of Mac OS X (10.1 wasn't quite the same thing). I expected to see lots of positive votes because of that, but I guess nobody ever remembers how small the window typically is. If they'd followed past precedent, the window would have started today, not two weeks ago.

i managed to convince my bosses to let me buy an iMac for work, and i bought it believing in Apple's track record for 2-3 months of an upgrade window. now i'll never get them to spend $129 on a software upgrade. whoops.

Sorry to hear it. Every time I see this question come up, I try to correct people (many seem to "remember" that it's always 30 days or something, yet it's never been that; even this one, the most generous ever, is something like 25 days). Always do thorough research before buying if there's an issue like this that will make or break the purchase. It sucks to feel like you were burned after the fact because you didn't have all the information (I've been there).

It's too bad about the educational pricing, and I guess that's why there's so many negatives on this story. I wonder what the real rationale is. Is it to curb abuse, or is it because Apple realized that the price difference doesn't usually make or break the purchase decision, so they can get more profit this way?

I've noticed that the edu discount has either shrunk or gone away on a lot of items in the last year. It's pretty much gone now on most non-computer items: iPhone, iPods, AppleTV, etc. Too bad, but I guess I can't complain. I've been able to take advantage of it for years because my wife works and teaches at a community college, but I can't say we ever really needed it, as we weren't hurting for money like starving students. But at least we never abused it like letting friends/family who didn't qualify use it, or even reselling on eBay!

Being fairly new to Mac (bought mine in June), how does the license go when installing a new OS ? I usually get upgrade disc which cost cheaper for my Windows machines. They require a previous version disc when installing. As everyone knows, WinXP started the activation thing. How does OSX works? Is it cheaper for an upgrade from Tiger? Does OSX have a license key?

There is nothing to stop you technically from installing Leopard on as many Macs as you want, but legally, you can only install one copy of Leopard on one Mac. If you want to install it on more than one (again, legally, not technically) you need to buy the $199 Family Pack.

The academic discount really disappointed me, but I’m hopelessly hooked and pre ordered straight away.

69 Dollars on the Harvard Educational Store

I just got an email from apple regarding purchasing Leopard for much cheaper with my edu discount. I logged onto Harvard's apple store to find leopard for sale at edu price for 69 dollars so it is possible in the last few minutes things have changed

i am from UK and i bought a qualifying mac, however i see that only people in the US get the 10Bucks legit leopard

anyone knows about uk, i cant find anything on the website.

The standard Mac OS Up-To-Date upgrade package is available to all customers who purchased a qualifying new Mac system from Apple or an Apple Authorised Reseller on or after October 1st, 2007, for a shipping and handling fee of £5.95 (inc VAT).

I appreciate your comments. Honestly, I am not trying to rip Apple off or anything, but like I said, I am new and not sure how it all works. I would gladly by another copy if this is the case or get the family pack. Only sucks cause I am a graduate student and they don't offer a family pack for that. So do I pay 199? or 119 x 2? Maybe I can go on campus and get it for 69 x 2. That is probably my best route. Need to see if UH is going to sell it.

Based on recent pricing, I was expecting it to come in at par, and pleased to see that it did.

And why are ppl whining about not getting a free upgrade on machines that they bought with 10.4? Were their Macs not advertised to come with 10.4? Were they promised 10.5? Was it even known at the time when 10.5 would ship?

$15 edu discount here

I'm a student at Simon Fraser University here in Vancouver and the edu price is $115. Any Canadian students seeing the old discounted prices??

Are you talking about Harvards official EDU store, or Apples EDU store (under Harvard) ?
