I'm calling B.S. on this photo. That image isn't from Apple. Prove me wrong, please.
Do you know what mockup means? A 3rd party doing a prediction of an announced 'Something'. In this case, the project codenamed Marble which turned out to be XCode 4. Many people thought it was a marble interface.

Agreed.

Looks tacky

The new calendar looks tacky with its "leather binding" iCal can use a few technical improvements but the GUI doesn't need that much of a change. The chrome GUI is just fine. Leather is not the way to go.

whilst I agree the leather look does work well on the iPad, it just doesn't fit on Mac OS X. Looks tacky.

Sorry Apple, poor job

I'm surprised that no one mentioned the new picture of Mt. Fuji which seams to be the theme so far... it's way less pixelated now, looks a lot better on higher resolution.

Wow, people really do hate change when it comes to OSX

Remember everyone going nuts over the iTunes logo?

The new iCal is just blucckkk. I much prefer the cleaner, modern look currently being used. I loved the old Brushed metal look but leather is kinda - or wait it is pushing it too far. Did someone from Microsoft join their design team?

Actually, when you use it, it isn't so bad. Still, an option to return to default is nice.

Let's not lump all change together. There's good change, there's change for the sake of change, and then there's bad changes.

I think people hate bad change. Some people just love change for the sake of change, while others despise it with reason. I don't think anyone dislikes good changes.

I don't get

I don't get one thing. We have a new major release of operating system Mac OS X Lion. What in the world it has to do with a new skin for iCal??? Even if iCal would be rewrote from scratch and would be simply the best in the world - it is just an application!

Where are new things and features of the system itself?

Pink Flamingo approves of the new design...

No having a Lion preview I can't say for sure, but I would imagine this will look odd if windowed along side other windows with a different UI. However the push from Apple appears to be for full screen apps. You'd simply switch your app and the whole screen shows what your working on.

In full screen mode I can see how this iCal UI would work, it will be like having your whole screen as a calendar. I can only really see an issue when working with side by side windows. No matter how much Apple push thier ideas, some people will prefer to work this way.

To be honest I couldn't care what it looks like. Its the abilities of the programme that matter to me. If there are new features introduced that make iCal a better programme then great. The UI is ultimately just superficial to the abilities the programme offers the user.

This full screen mode Will be alright in some cases. But if I need to reference my calendar while writing an email, full screen mode will be of little use. I'd like to see tighter integration of apps, not separating them to a point where if I change an app, I'm in a completely different place. I know they worked it out where you can just involk mission control but it's better to just gave more real estate. I'm sure all these little changes are meant for laptop useres with small screens.

As for the calendar, it reminds me of the cheap, plastic chrome or as someone pointed out, fake wood, particle board, or designers that try to design something like fake bevel picture frames or page curls. So tacky, and that's what it is. Plain and simple creating the illusion that something is what it isn't is just tacky.

I don't think we need such heavy handed metaphores these days. The computer has been properly introduced to the world and people can wrap their heads around a software calendar without fake gimmicks. I think it has to do with not knowing where to go with it. Cheap and childish UI design. Reminds me of a floor lamp I bought at target and returned the next day because of all the faux materials. I worry about people and their lack of standards.

Get out of here with your calm, rational thinking...

Seriously though, I found this particular change to be rather ugly. That said, there have been a few aesthetic changes that Apple has made along the way that I didn't like at first, but eventually grew on me. Then there's the 3D dock, which I still think is ugly as heck!

That looks worse than the MobileMe web app.

When an OSX desktop app looks worse than a webapp, you know something is very, very wrong.

That isn't to say that the current iCal is good. I was really hoping for a more "calendar" looking iCal app, but if it means the UI is cartoony looking, count me out.

It'll be great if this flows into iOS too.

it came from iOS.

Just what I wanted to see.

Bye Bye UI Guidelines.

Guidelines not sacred unchangeable commandments.

I get how that could work on an iPad, when you're holding the thing in your hands like a real calendar, but when operating on a monitor....I don't get it.

They are doing it because it is how it works on an ipad. They are trying to appeal to those that got ipads and have PCs. They want them to switch and feel like the familiar look etc will help. But as we haven't seen the final product we don't know if there will be controls to allow you to swap this look for the 'classic' one or not. Same as using the whole Launch Pad or just using the Finder like always

time for them to inegrate Facetime and iChat

Just because it wasn't mention doesn't mean they won't.

If it were $29 like Snow Leopard was, then that'd be different, but I highly doubt that'll happen this time around.

why not. Hell they could also make it a real upgrade and not that ******** game of acting like the $29 disk only works if you have leopard. Guess what, not true. You can pop it until a computer running Panther and it works fine. You are best off backing up your ***** and doing an erase and install to clean out any caca but it does work.

I need iChat on my iPad. It's the only thing missing in my eyes!

Could happen at any point.

...and so the merger of iOS and OS X has officially begun.

sorry lovey but it started a long time ago. The two are really just different heads on the same body.

When changing months and years, the paper tears, and it looks good with the leather, it doesn't with the unified grey.

Seriously, why haven't they added MSN support to iChat yet? Adium is great but iChat is just simpler and looks great right out of the box.

Wait, what? Lame! Someone should be fired. Is there a way to undecorate the leather theme?
