I have to admit, I don't understand what Apple is doing lately, in terms of the UI. iCal really looks awful on Lion. It's as if it's not a Mac app anymore. Safari, iTunes, Mail, etc. There's a similar look to the apps. Why is iCal treated as if it's not even made by Apple?
While I completely understand wanting it to work the same as it does on an iPad, all of this eye candy is slowing the app down and making it ugly and clunky.
It's also less user friendly now.
Let's say you have six calendars. Previously, there was a pane open that showed which ones you were viewing. If you looked at your calendar and didn't see any appointments labeled "Work", for example, you could glance to the side and see that you didn't have your Work calendar displaying. Now, if you don't see any appointments labelled as Work, you have to click the calendars button to see if the Work calendar is enabled.
To enable a calendar used to be 1 click. You'd click the calendar check box. Now, it's three clicks. Click the Calendars box to get the silly bouncy pop-up. Click the calendar you want. Then click to close the silly bouncy pop-up box.
At a glance, there's no way to see which calendars are enabled and which ones aren't. While I understand removing info for the sake of a small screen, not everyone is using a small screen! A desktop/laptop OS is different from a phone/tablet OS.
I've been using Macs since the early 90s, so the issue for me isn't change. The issue is a poor decision to prioritize form over function.
Obviously, I'm no fan of the new iCal.
