My single iMac Core Duo, out of a 4 Apple Computer Home Network, is the sole machine that cannot support Lion.

Yet I want doc synchronization, a la iCloud !!!

I had actually been researching upgrading the CPU to a Core 2 Duo, and all the mess that entails, just to support Lion.

Now, I will want to wait and see. :)

Don't bother. my iMac Core Duo... I replaced the 1.83GHz Core Duo with a 1.66 GHz Core 2 Duo. On the bright side, its a bit faster, and in Activity Monitor, all Apps that CAN run in 64 bit now run in 64 bit :)

On the down side, I was expecting, and i'm correct, the EFI will stop you.
Unless you can change it, the EFI will not allow to boot from a hard disk with Lion installed. I can't even run the Lion installer in SL. Instead of saying it requires a bla bla, it simply says it will not run on this machine.

Same goes for attempting to boot off a Lion install disk I made.. it doesn't work.

Basically, only upgrade and put a C2D in if you will continue to use SL, and want snappier performance, and 64 bit... IF you want Lion, get a different Mac.

I'm not sure why it's taken me so long to really understand what Apple is doing here but it's very smart. I was hesitant to really embrace the iCloud concept because I was annoyed about losing Gallery, web hosting and some of the other functionality I've using for years in MobileMe/.Mac. Now I see that all those same features are bound to appear, just in the form of application specific items. I'm sure there is a new iLife and iWork on the way that will have cloud services built into the individual apps... iMovie will have something like a "theater" where you can share your creations through the cloud, iPhoto will have a "gallery" function, etc. But now, these services are free as added value to the app using the free iCloud storage given to everyone and the increased use of these features pushes users into a situation where they really see the value/utility of paying for subscription services to increase this cloud space. More people are introduced to these web services and more people pay to be a part of it. Brilliant really.
Exactly, there never was a good reason why Apple would get out of the business of making it very easy to share images and videos via the web with others. It was obvious that Apple would implement some kind of replacement relatively soon (even if maybe not right away at launch, getting the 'synching' right, particularly with iOS devices had a higher priority). What Apple likely is getting out for good is the hosting of html pages [generated on your computer] and the plain drive sharing feature of iDisk.

Do I have to upgrade to iCloud if I update Lion to 10.7.2 or whatever new version? I would prefer to continue using MobileMe as my iPhone 3G will not support iCloud as it cannot be upgraded to iOS5.

Any ideas?

Ugh... Actually tempted to roll back to Snow Leopard if this is true. And avoid heaps of performance issues in Lion. :( Aperture 3 is plain torture right now on less than 8 GB RAM. Which is ridiculous. On the other hand, Apple may have future performance fixes in store for Lion. Decisions, decisions. ;)

Aperture 3 - you are right. Pain in the a.. w/ 4GB. Just upgraded my MBP this weekend to 8GB due to this. Not very expensive but still.

MobileMe is no more. Therefore, you cannot keep using it.

The current dev builds seem to suggest that the 10.7.2 and iCloud updates are distinct (though 10.7.2 probably lays some groundwork for iCloud), and Apple has been very clear that MobileMe is staying until Summer 2012, so it'd be ridiculous if you were forced to move to iCloud as part of an OS X update IMO. You should be ok.

What bug? They left this out on purpose. It also does not work in Lion... on purpose.
Calling a missing feature a bug is a not-so-subtle way of manipulating others to support your call for this feature. Because enough people will not stop and think, 'Hey this is not a bug, it is a missing feature', they will read bug and mentally agree that any bug should be fixed. This is the attempt to put Apple under 'public' pressure by anchoring the notion in people's mind that unless this feature is implemented, Apple is not fixing a known, long-standing bug.

(That is one possible interpretation of the motivation behind somebody calling this a bug, another is that the poster is fully aware that people will realise this motivation and thus mean this rather tongue-in-cheek.)

This is great

I think tons of people are running snow leopard still that it's to risky to not give any updates to people.

AWESOME news. My wife has a MB her work (university) issued to her and we just had to fight to get it upgraded to Snow Leopard so we could sync our calendars with my work MB, our home MBP, and our ipod's. So we would have been SOL next summer if they didn't bring SL compatibility.

This is great!

My hope is to eventually get all three machines to Lion next fall or winter when it is more stable, but until then this helps easy my stress over next summer.

I really hope so because I have not a lot of hope for my iPhone 3G and iCloud as it will not be upgradeable to iOS5 and I don't want to replace a perfect working phone.

3rd- party SSD

Just buy SSD's from OWC - TRIM built in
and much better than any vendor out there
and so much better than the one's apple sells.

Good News.

I'm not interested in Lion or cloud computing but I would like to fiddle around a little with iCloud. Maybe it actually does something useful.

Watch...10.6.9. will break Wi-Fi, but give you iCloud which you cannot connect to. Yeah, I'm bitter still.

Fortunately this allows many users to experience iCloud's service while the Lion OS continues to be stabilized. Sounds like a good situation all around, I'm sure soon enough Lion will be stable enough to warrant those on SL (like me) to make the jump if iCloud for Lion was supposed to be one of the bigger selling points.

But I was just wondering, although I figure none of us would really know for sure, has anyone considered what animal would come after Lion? Since Lions are considered kings, I'm assuming the next animal would at least be a different animal. Maybe a Gorilla soon. lol

Snow Lion.

It would be nice to see some cloud features easily and seamlessly integrated in OS!
