Why oh why.. such a silly name?
Do anti-fanbois really need such canon fodder?

Just wait for the subsequent versions of OSX which will continue to prefix the Leopard name...

Earth Leopard, Wind Leopard, Fire Leopard, Sand Leopard, Angry Leopard, Lazy Leopard, Liquid Leopard, Bacon Leopard... etc.

Edit: I honestly can't beleive I missed the best of them all Def Leopard

They are really going to need to sell this with some kind of feature update or most people aren't going to buy it - how many people are going to hand over $129 for a performance update.

Shouldn't Apple be doing this anyway - it seems like an omission that Leopard isn't great and this is mearly a dare i say "Leopard Service Pack" that you have to pay for.

Not impressed at the moment.

Ha! an admission of poor QC, coding and bloat on Leopard!
I dont want a new feature unless it ESSENTIAL, and not fluff

Make a fast, stable rock solid OS that we can all be proud of as Steve leaves the companyy

holy jumping to random conclusions batman

Finally we will get a new QuickTime API because the current one is just so old and ****ing horrid it's sick.

Performance gains are needed!!!

Leopard is definitely in line for performance gains. I'd like to see everything in the OS run a lot more smoother.

Good point. I hope Safari will be snappier. That's all I really want

Do you think the mention of 'multi-cores' is referring to Intel Macs (as they're the only ones with multi cores.) Possible hint at optimization for Intel as opposed to PPC

The last of the PM G5's had multicores.

I wish they'd talked about this in the Keynote instead of all those iPhone app demos...

It's still in early development, so I don't think that they want to let their competitors in on too much info.

Hopefully this will mean proper GPU's in all future Macs. Down with intergrated graphics.

Totally agreed! I want real graphics!

My GMA950 should just about manage a vector UI with OS 8's Platinum theme.

Oh Display Postscript, where are you hiding?

Are you kidding?

Between a 3G iPhone for $199, or, as Bertrand Serlet put it, "we hit the pause button on new features to focus on perfecting the world’s most advanced operating system," I think the phone's more interesting.

I don't blame Steve for not talking about Snow Leopard in depth during the keynote. My guess is that if the release is a year off, it's not ready to demo, and for people who thought iPhone demos were un-interesting, just imagine 2 hours of slides and pie charts on how OpenCL and Exchange 2007 will eventually work on Snow Leopard...

Could this be any more easy to figure out?
Not much changes feature wise, aside from more speed. And it comes out in the winter, or runs cooler. It is called Leopard now. So lets think of a faster Leopard, possibly a Leopard that makes things run cooler or debuts at Macworld in January...

Snow Leopard. Yep, that seems to have explained itself. :D

Is it me, or did this WWDC make a lot of reference to MS Exhange. let see here:

Outlook has trouble running if it is not the same version as the exchange server.

Our Exchange server keeps going down

MS MACBU's Entourage has trouble with exchange.

it seems to me the tide is shifting, as I predicted where Apple will make more in roads to the Enterprise level and Apple will be the next main computer platform and totally eclipse MS.

Also, with Mobile Me (and yes I agree the logo looks a way to much like the Windows ME logo) adding more PC support, I see it now. the 2 bridges are that apple will now be the force supplying information to Apple, and PC devices. Looks good. MS had their run. Let's hope Apple can continue and stay rock solid.

Are you freak'n kidding? I have a $3,000 Mac Pro whose processors often only works at 50% because the software won't take full advantage of the hardware that's there. (I can trick Compressor into running multiple threads on the same compression and it DOES speed up, but other programs don't have that option.)

If I have a $129 chance to double the speed of my $3,000 investment I'd jump on that in a heartbeat.

How can that not impress you?

EDIT: And let me be clear that while I WOULD pay $129 for this I'm betting it won't cost that much. For the full version, sure, but I'm sure there will be an "upgrade from Leopard" price, which is unique for OSX, yes, but this is a unique update.

is this going to be $129/£85 ?
it's fine to improve the performance and all that but they need to include new functions and bits so that it seems to basic users to not be a waste of time. Apple can't just make the equivalent of a large service pack and charge us for it.

Seems apple are buying major development time building an OS for when the iPhone inevitably moves to mobile intel chips. Much like which caused the delay in Leopard. I hope it's cheaper than normal.

Nobody, which is why it'll be either 20 bucks, or free just like 10.1.

But if they're putting a hold on the features, they have nothing for competitors to find out.

I have mixed feelings on this. I like getting a brand new operating system every 12-18 months or so, and always look forward to the new features.

But for years, I have said that Apple (and Windows) should just work on perfecting what they've got instead of constantly trying to add new things. I'm sure some people will say Leopard is perfect and bug-free, but this isn't the case. If they spend time on the little quirks and bugs (feel free to visit the discussion forums at apple.com if you aren't aware of any), then that will be a welcome change.

Now, if they expect $129 for a what appears to be in essence a maintenance release, they have another thing coming...

This is pretty much what I feel too. not really sure why the need for a new operating system if it's mostly stability and performance improvements. certainly not worth $129. besides whoever heard of a stable new operating system?! don't make me laugh. Nobody (including apple) has ever made one and that's not going to change in Snow leopard -I'll bet all my money on that. Leopard just might become stable in a year time.

A year is a long way away. I'm sure the main focus is going to be on performance and whatnot, but I'm also willing to guess that they're going to wrap that performance-beef in a little feature-bacon for OS filet mignon. :D

Release!

I bet 10.6 will be released at the WWDC next June!

Macworld will focus on the redesigned MacBook and MacBook Pro computers. As well and the 6G iPods

Will this preview be in the Keynote that will be on Apple's site? I'd really like to see the preview.

Anyways, I think it's a great idea. Really, think about it. For the past 7 years, Apple has just focused on features and eye candy, features and eye candy, etc. and if they continue to do so, OS X will become sluggish, bloated, slow, and large. Just like Vista. It's time Apple does a bit of clean up so that never happens :D
