Apogee. Even if it is not their fault, I bet that will be the faster route. I am consistently blown away by their support.

I already contacted them. Yes, they have a good support department.
I sent apple a product feedback bug report too.

I'll write a mail to Chris Foresman from ars technica too.

I wrote to apogee. They didn't answer. I don't think they will answer. It has been almost a week since I wrote. I'm gonna write again. Any other users did receive an answer yet by the their sound interface manufacturer ?

It's a bit frustrating that almost nobody cares or tries to invest in this problem in this forum.

Did you get a reply from chris on ars technica?

Have you tried a pci x firewire card to see if this eliminates the problem, as an interim measure?

I have a Lexicon I-ONIX U22 USB audio interface and it doesn't exhibit any issues with sound quality.

It has it's own annoying issue of not initializing after my MP wakes from sleep, but that's been a problem since day 1 and I've just accepted that I need to unplug/replug it after resuming from sleep. :(

I have not received an answer from chris yet. I hope he will reply me though ! No reply by Apogee too.... I don't have a FireWire PCI-E Card, but that was my second thought to solve this problem. Anyone has one to try?

Thank You VirtualRain.

NOW we at least know that not every interface is affected !

"Hello,

No one here has ever heard of this whistle noise before. Can you try connecting your Ensemble to another Mac Pro with similar specs, perhaps at an Apple store?

What part of the Mac does the noise seem to be coming from?

Best regards,

Will Apple let you plug something into a Mac Pro at the store? Hopefully you won't need to load the accompanying software; I can't imagine Apple wanting to allow that. Or does the "guest" account solve that problem?

Why should I go to the Apple Store with my Interface ? Other users have the exact same problem. Even if there will be no noise on the Mac Pro in the Apple store - Fact is, that the noise is only appearing after the Audio Update 1.0 .

I answered him, but didn't receive any answer yet....

I think we will have to live with this issue until there will be more people reporting this issue or simply helping out....

Just received a PCI-E Card for FireWire 400 and plugged my Interface in.

http://www.sonnettech.com/product/allegrofw400pcie.html

Sadly, it does not solve the problem.

I've got the same problem. I'm using an Apogee Duet. The high pitch noise is there whether the Apogee is plugged into the Mac's FW port or into my FW PCIe card. What's interesting is that the noise will still be audible for about 3 seconds after you pull the FW plug out and then does a quick fade out and disappears. It's definitely coming from the Mac Pro and NOT the Apogee. Apogee support is the best and I'm sure they'll investigate it but it's definitely an Apple problem and the best Apogee can do is probably to just call Apple's attention to the issue.

So, none of this was ever resolved? I am still on Leopard with my Apogee unplugged (because there was never any resolution for original CPU overdrive/audio problem :().

There is hope...(?)

This might be some good news.

I have written to Apple via Bug reporter several weeks ago and got now an answer by a Developer Supporter:

"..... After further investigation it has been determined that this is a known issue, which is currently being investigated by engineering. This issue has been filed in our bug database under the original Bug ID# 7675558 ...... "

I hope they will fix it finally but I am not too optimistic.

ok, I have now worked about 12 hours with the new update. The noise is gone and I haven't experienced any other strange behaviors. System is running now much cooler again. I hope we can finally close this TOPIC !

Maybe someone can analyze what the update 1.1 has done exactly.(?)

thanks to cl-user again for his support and ALL OTHERS who have helped reporting the issue to apple.

I've had this problem for years with my 2006 iMac (10.5 and 10.6, and even 10.4 i think) and a Firewire Audiophile. I got an Echo Audiofire 8 yesterday and hoped it would go away. It didn't. The awful noise is the same type as in seisend's example, except mine has pauses lasting about a second. Comes out of the lower vent too.

Will try the suggestions here, and anything else i can find, but i'm ********g tired of this. Was going to open it up (and that is not a fun thing to do with this machine) to find some way to silence it, but will try this first.

Managed to record and bring out the noise pretty well with a dynamic mic and some high-pass. How loud the noise is depends very much on how your ear is positioned wrt the speaker (turn your head to find the not so sweet spot).

Well the Problem on the Mac Pro got finally fixed with the Mac Pro Audio Update 1.1 . So it should be software based on the iMac too. I don't know much about .kext files and I am not sure if your iMac works if you maybe try to replace some .kext files (AppleHDA/IOPlatformPluginFamily) with the Mac Pro (or different iMac Model) ones. If you do that, make sure you can access your drive with another bootable OS partition in case your iMac will NOT start again correctly or you get Kernel Panics, so you can replace the .kext files with the old ones. I don't know if this works. Use "Kext Helper b7" to replace the kext's. I posted a link for this in the thread to download.

I think the problem is located with one or both of these kext files...

Maybe some other one can help who has a better technical background of this.

Did you write a BUG REPORT to Apple ?

Hey, i forgot to post an update, but i tried replacing the files using the app. Didn't do much but slow down boot. I don't remember if i've filed a bug report. I'll probably do that. I see from apple's forum i'm not the only one using an iMac who's experienced this.

Also, my FW-chip is from Agere (used CHUD tools to figure that out), and i've read something about those around that time or a little later being problematic with audio interfaces. I suspect my iMac (model MA590LL. 2GHz C2D, late 2006) is among the first to use Agere instead of TI. Maybe that explains why they dropped FW800, which, if i remember right, had become standard in Macs by that time (even my PB from 2004 has FW800).

How do I know if I have this problem on my mac pro?

Hello everyone,

Got a Quad-core 2009 Mac Pro running at 3.33 using w3580(was w3520).. question: How do I know if I have this problem also? My bootrom is quite different from everyone elses.. it ends in a B08 versus B07 OR B06.

MP41.0081.B08

I sure would like to know if I have this audio problem also.

Just make sure your Mac Pro is up to date.

Mac Pro Audio Update 1.1 by Apple Software Update fixes all.

Ok, went to download 1.1 update and the following happens:

Mac Pro Audio Update can't be installed on Snow Leopard(My start up disk). This updates requires Mac OS X 10.6.3 or earlier.. I am running 10.6.4!

So, now what? Or do I have the update already? I am certainly not going to downgrade back to 10.6.3 to do this though.. and 1.0 audio update barks and says: Computer doesn't require this update..

I think my bootrom has to do with this.. Again, I am not going to downgrade to either 10.6.2 to do 1.0 audio update or 10.6.3 to do 1.1, however I think I have all the updates because of my revised bootrom of B08.

If you are using 10.6.4 and there is nothing showed in the Apple Software Updater, then everything is just FINE !
