Yes. Intel is pricing the opening round of Quad Harpertowns the same as the current price of the Dual Woodcrests. Yes all SS motherboards for certain. Prices stay same - power radically goes UP. Biggest power leap in the line in years. :)

So then Apple would be forced to either do a swap out or price drop end of September after Intel's announcement?

Yea, but who's dumb enough to buy something that isn't worth what it should be?

Well put simply a "dated" Mac Pro might still be worth the price of purchase to an individual or company despite what may or may not becomming or what prices should be.

And if Apple gets the new motherboard ahead of time? I hate waiting. But I've been waiting since June. ;)

Intel are unlikely to let Apple start shipping penryn systems before other manufacturers, with a street date of November the 12th, it seems unlikely there will be new MPs shipping before then. That doesn't mean they might not be announced earlier though.

Multi, hope your right

I hope your dead right on this multimedia, I have $4,500 burning a whole in my pocket.

Didn't Apple start shipping Woodcrest before anyone else started to? November seems too far. I would think they would show off Leopard with an 8-core line up.

Also, wouldn't it be easier for Apple to start shipping new MacPros as soon as Leopard comes out? That way they don't have to update the previous MacPro models with Leopard? Or does it take the same amount of time?

Intel already let apple ship 4-core 3.0Ghz Xeon parts before any other manufacturer got hold of them. It's still tough going finding 4-core 3.0Ghz Xeon parts outside of Apple's Mac Pros.

No Woodcrest was available on Dell precisions in the July I think. Leopard is expected late october, they can show it off on new Mac Pros while still not shipping before the release date of Penryn processors.

They can get away with having them shipping early novemeber with Leopard and announcing them before.

It's a slightly different situation, but yes it is possible that Apple could have them early. More likely they will just show them off earlier and then ship after Leopard.

Looks like the Precision 490/690 has them now.

Yeah, they do have Woodcrest and Clowertown now.

But I am sure the new Mac Pro will come before November 11th. That is the day where you will be able to buy the chips in retail. It wouldn't be a stretch to imagine Apple getting a hold on Harpertown and Wolfdale before time, like they did with the Xeon 5365 (Quad-core, 3.0Ghz) and X7900 (iMac, 2.8Ghz) chip.

Any chance that the Intel announcement regarding Skull Trail on September 18 as reported in another thread here will lead into a Mac Pro announcement in Paris?

Current MAC Pro dual quad 8 core

There is always the option of just simply buying 2 Intel Q6600s and installing them into the current Mac Pro and having an 8 core system now.

It's been done I have read about it.. Here is an example

It will NOT BE WORTH buying once the all 45nm dual quad 8 core line is out with far superior graphics cards and.......

MM, let's hope they don't pull an iMac on the next Mac Pro. I certainly hope the card choices are going to be far superior. Unfortunately, you just don't know with Apple lately.

8800GTX Mr. Jobs. 8800GTX.

I was about to start a thread seeking price advice on purchasing a used Mac Pro, but it seems like I definitely shouldn't be considering this right now. My name everyday computer is a 15" 2.16ghz MacBook Pro C2d w/ 3 gigs of RAM, but I want to get a Mac Pro for home too to replace my Mac Mini.

Back in early '06 I purchased a 1.42ghz PPC Mac Mini right when they released the Intel Mac Minis. I bought it off Craigslist for $375 from someone who had purchased it for $599 + tax two months earlier. He was just itching to get rid of it, and he told me he could have sold it for more, but would prefer to sell to someone already familiar with macs.

I was thinking of looking for the same sort of deal to replace this Mac Mini w/ a Mac Pro, but getting a Mac Pro right now is really not worth it? Even if I could get a low, low craigslist price? I'm passively looking. This really isn't top priority for me so I can be real patient.

never ever ever buy a new mac right when the model is released. look at the MBP screen issues, etc. History has always shown that apple fanboys will buy the first ones no matter what, so quality control is not needed. let the fanboys buy the first ones. I would wait 4-5 months.
