I posted a couple of weeks ago that I’d come to the sleeping Mac or at least left asleep a few times and it being off. On me restarting I was getting the “this Mac didn’t shutdown” bla bla bla. Looked and had a couple of odd panics.

16c
96gb ram
1bc ssd
580 gpu

today whilst in after effects (yes I know it’s third party) wasmoving some layers and the whole Mac stuttered and shut down in front of my eyes. Just shut itself right off.

any ideas. I don’t think it’s the RAM, as I’ve had that in since I got it late January. Only really noticed the issues recently.

I would think that kernel panic is due to incompatible software . do you run any antivirus program ? I had this issue before with Norton security even with all of the updates installed.

nope, the only software I have on I adobe CC and the base system. And nothing has recently been installed.

Same thing just now. Closing photoshop.

If it shuts down as in suddenly powers off then hardware failure seems most likely.

Sounds like it has happened in two programs that feature GPU acceleration (at least photoshop does - no idea about AFX) so I would put my money on the GPU.

If it was a software issue the system would either restart or shut down or freeze the desktop - at least in my opinion.

Try putting heavy loads on the GPU (game demo, full screen video, image viewers flipping through large files, etc) and see if it goes down in a reproducable way.

Sounds like a hardware issue, but you can't know where unless you remove and disconnect any upgrades you've done (RAM, drives) and see if it happens stock. If not, add them back in one at a time until you find what's causing it.

RAM can go bad too, though. You could pull it and see if you still have this problem, or run something like memtest to check the RAM. Of course if you have other upgrades or devices attached that you think are more likely than the RAM failing, it makes sense to test without those first.

These shutdowns when sleeping are quite prevalent on many Macs running Catalina. I and others here experienced the same problem with sleep after installing a High Point SSD7101 card. In our case, the Mac can go to sleep for a few minutes without any issue, but later, when it tries to go into deep sleep or Power Nap, it crashes.

Other posts around the Internet seem to focus on an issue with the bus. By any chance, are you using a USB-C display? Even if you're not, consider disconnecting all of your peripherals and PCIe cards one by one and testing.

I've worked around the issue for now by simply disabling sleep, but I'm still hoping for a fix.

External LaCie, although ironically the drive wasn’t being used. No data links to the project is was in.

Ram test came back fine. It’s just odd that’s it’s happened twice in two days. And yet the Mac is fast asleep right now and has been for over 6 hours

I tested my MP7,1's sleep feature, and had it asleep overnight and this morning all is well as it woke without any issues.

I attach my Energy Saver pref panel for your attention. What are your settings ?

Maybe give the Startup with D key pressed for running the Apple's diagnostic check.

from those Panic Log

panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff80168288b7): "AppleAHCIDiskQueueManager::setPowerState(0xffffff80dadf1d80 : 0xffffff7f997f7958, 2 -> 3) timed out after 100702

This is related to the AHCI Kext. This kext has the power management ability of internal or external SATA Disk Drives.

I think you'd better detach all of those disks both internal or external to do the stability test.

also have tons of issues with my MacPro, pretty much troubleshooting since I bought it 3 weeks ago.

  • Some of my issues are like yours it just shut down while using FCPX
  • all applications hang and I have to force quit everything and hard restart mac
  • Can't restart FCPC after force quite have to restart Mac first
  • Mac becomes super slow.
  • Mac has restarted itself in the morning

I have the 12 core with 580 but put a vega 64 in and Accelsior 4TB HD however part of troubleshooting I removed everything and put it back to stock config same issue.

Reinstalled system from scratch twice.

Apple run diagnostics found no issues.

Seems like it is associated with my several DROBO DAS if any of my Drobos is plugged in it will start sometimes after a day sometimes quicker.

I’ve not had any sleep issues. The LaCie goes off when the system sleeps and comes back when it is woken up. I’ve done a diagnostic no errors shown.

Well I don’t have anything internal apart from the system drive. I’ve had the lacie detached all week and had no shutdowns or restarts. Strange issues really. Was running the LaCie on my 2013 mp without issue. Seems odd that’s an external raid like LaCie would cause issue?

I had the same recurring kernel panics ("AppleAHCIDiskQueueManager::setPowerState(0xffffff99dd5e7b40 : 0xffffff8002fadcf0, 3 -> 0) timed out after 100569 ms @IOServicePM.cpp:5524") multiple times on a cPM 5,1 and I blamed software, but it was actually my Crucial 4TB NVMe SSD (main OS Drive).
After kernel panics resuming from sleep for about a month, one time I powered off and restarted and the NVMe SSD was GONE! Could not bring it back so I did an RMA with Crucial and got a new one. Had great wake from sleep since then with just one kernel panic that was unrelated to "AppleAHCIDiskQueueManager::setPowerState", so yeah, a bad NVMe SSD will do this!
