I ordered mine with my edu discount the minute the store came up after the keynote. I've been waiting for this machine for 6 months, as my PB G4 is aging quickly these days. I upgraded to the x1900XT and it shows my ship date as Sep 12th.

That's a whole month. I guess it won't kill me, or will it?

I'm certainly hoping that standard PCIe GFX cards will work, with the correct EFI drivers but I guess we'll all have to wait and see. The AMD buyout has me a little worried on future compatibiliy so my hope is that I'll be able to drop an NVIDIA GeForce 9900 or something in a year or two.

I'm quite suprised the only NVIDIA cards apple offered were a baragin 7300 and a workstation Quadro. Why no 7800 or 7900?

I'm developing a twitch. For some reason, my fingers keep falling on CMD+R at the order status page. Wierd, huh?

I know what you mean

Fedge,

I was in a similar situation as you in that I was waiting for this machine since Januray of this year. I've ordered the ATI card with mine too, ship date also the 12th.

Congrats!

I'm still on my old one.... cant wait to get me wot you got. Looks great. enjoy it.

Intel Chipset Identification Utility download

The 5000 Series comes in the following

5000p
5000v
5000x

Intel 5000 series drivers

You will need to run the Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility to optimally configure the Intel® Chipset

Next use Sisoft Sandra to Identify the other chipsets i.e the NIC - Sound etc.

It is an intel 5000x chipset. I haven't installed any chipset drivers, it seems to be working fine.

I installed the current forceware drivers and now my video card is working great.

I also went onto intel's site and guessed a network driver to install based on hardware profile and this one worked for me:

http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scr...XP+Professional&lang=eng&strOSs=44&submit=Go!

The only items flagged with a question mark in the hardware profiler are the sound and USB-IR, I will work on those later.

I'd be interested in some SiSoft Sandra scores...

Also, 3dmark06 (even tho you only have the 7300GT) scores.

Question regarding bootcamp:

Do you have any additional SATA hd's around? I'm curious, if you put in a new SATA drive, can you install Windows entirely to that HD or does it still want to use the primary hard drive? I hope you can (if not now, then with future releases of bootcamp) install to stand alone HD instead of splitting up the main drive.

You should be able to give windows its own drive, all Boot Camp really does is tell the EFI where to point to boot the machine up. Give BC a bootable partition, even if it is on another physical drive, and everything should eb smooth sailing.

Great news. So when the forceware drivers installed without a problem maybe the nvidia 7300 card is a normal one which could also work in a pc. And maybe a normal pc card will work in the mac pro without any problems...

dude, seriously super sweet setup :) got me all jealous I can't imagine the fun that could be with Final Cut!

Mac Pro IS in Apple Stores

Persistence pays off. 1 hour after the Mac Pro was announced I was at my Apple Store (Cambridge MA). They hadn’t heard the news. Today they got one. Guess who bought it?

I am going to wait until Saturday to pick it up, tax free day here. But I saw it. The stores are getting their shipments now.

Oh, they only had the standard configuration. I didn’t ask about upgrades.

aftermarket stores

My mac pros shipping date isnt until sep 5th...so yeah ill be waiting a bit longer...I can't wait to get it and im so happy that I finally made the switch!
Anybody get a shipping date from any of the non-Apple stores? The sales rep at Powermax has no idea when they will get any machines. I needed the trade in bucks so went that route or I'd probably be playing with one now. A real bummer but last time I looked ebay was swamped with no bid G5 towers, so this was the best option.

3.0Ghz. etc. etc.
But I need some questions answered if possible:
1. Should I buy only 1GB of RAM as it will be much cheaper later from 3rd parties?
2. Should I buy only the 250 GB HD as 500GB etc will be much cheaper from other suppliers?
3. I have heard that crucial sells RAM but is there anywhere else (in Canada?) and where do you find the previousely mentioned 400 GB HD's for $100 each?
4. Video Card: Should I order the cheapest one as I have a good deal on ATI products?

Thanks so much guys,
I have been a dedicated Mac user for the last long while but when it comes to upgrading and stuff I am clueless
Peace

The 160GB HD is the best option in the BTO model. You save $75 by downgrading fromt he 250. Stores like CanadaCompuers have the 320GB WD or Seagate for $120. The $99 400GB deal was not avail in Canada as far as I know.

Should the Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 - 750GB - @ €399.- also fits in the Mac Pro?

Than you can upgrade your Mac up to 3 Terabyte..

since that runs on SATA2 I dont see any reason why it wouldnt.

And techinicly, if you wanted to max out your HD space, you could fit another HD with spacers in the area for the 2nd optical drive, thus giving you almost 4 Terabtyes (3.75) of storeage.

Thanks, sometimes we all guess right before the actual info comes in ... and I don't have to edit any of my past posts.

Gift Cards Can Be Bought For Any Specific Amount With A Check

I am about 5 minutes from an Apple Store. That is a GREAT idea! You can make the gift card for any amount?
Yes. Lucky you. I had to drive 35 miles to Santa Clara to finish buying my Quad G5 that way in February. They took my check no problem no hassle. Then I used one of their Macs to complete the transaction right there in the store. Took Apple's customer service Sales Department several hours to figure that one out. I just saved you hours of pain on the Apple phone with them. :p

Boy do I love this Quad G5. And it's only 15% slower than the Mac Pro 2.66. :p

I WANT 8 CORES. I NEED 8 CORES. I WANT 8 CORES. I NEED 8 CORES. I WANT 8 CORES. Clovertown get here soon... I fugure 5-6 months worst case to 8 cores via Dual Clovertown Core 2 processors.

If you get the chance could you post the specs (model #, hard drive type, etc.) of the seagate hard drive that comes in the system so I could try to find a similar model to buy after-market to avoid Apple's high costs. I know you could prolly put almost any HD in but I would feel safer with a similar one.

Mac Pro Hard Drive Space Can Go Up To 4.5 TB • Six Times 750GB

Nope. Up to 4.5 TB. There are TWO MORE SATA Cables in the Optical Bay Area waiting for TWO MORE SATA Drives to occupy the optical's space.

I would remove the optical and put it in a FW case so I can have two permanent up there and 4 removables for projects down under. This is far and away the most expandible and project centric Mac ever offered. The design is close to perfection I think. :p

SATA 300 or II Is What You Want • And Don't Forget The 16MB Cache

They are Seagate SATA 300's. You don't have to worry about messing up. Just get any SATA with the Roman Numeral II or 300MB or 3GB and not 1.5GB or 150 MB or Roman Numeral I to have the fastest possible drives. Hitachi (formerly IBM), Western Digital, Maxtor, Seagate all good choices. Barefeats.com will give you directions on which are fastest. I have Western Digital 500 in my G5 Quad. That is the fastest 500GB drive according to them. In the recent past Apple has used Maxtor as well as Seagate.

And Don't Forget The 16MB Cache.

I would snag a G5 Quad then if that's the case. If you can get a G5 Quad for $1500 that would be a steal.

Yes Opticals Are PATA/100 IDE • But Two More SATA Connectors Are In There As Well

From the pics I've seen, the optical drives are IDE.
Yes they are PATA/100 IDE. But Apple also put two more SATA Connectors in there in case you want to put SATA drives in that area instead. Here's the Mac Pro schematic that shows you what I mean:

Same issues with Boot Camp and Parallels

Got my new Mac Pro today and can't get Parallels to work... get all sorts of fun kernel panics. Boot Camp is irritating because it doesn't recognize either of the extra two drives in my Mac Pro, wanting me to partition my drive.

I'll try downloading the drivers the original poster suggested and see if they work.

Consult With Parallel's Tech Support Too

How about consulting with Parallels Tech Support? I'm sure they want and need your feedback. :) Should be very happy to help you a lot so they can learn from you what the problems are. Keep in touch. I really want to know what you figure out that makes it work flawlessly.

Congrats on your acquisition and courage to be an Alpha Tester. :p
