I didn't say you could.

Read my post again.

The high end iMac has as many cores as the low end MP.

The high end iMac has four cores.

The low end MP has four cores.

(both have hyperthreading, providing four more partial cores)

Get it now?

Lol. Of course I get it. I was not confused.

What confuses me is why anyone would buy a 4-core Mac Pro over an iMac.

As far as I am concerned the 4-core MP doesn't exist. Thus when reading a generic comparison of "iMac vs Mac Pro" I presume you are comparing a 4 core iMac to an 8 core Mac Pro.

I'll give up a few seconds for...

  • Real RAM expansion
  • A ton of ports (FW, USB, Audio)

iMac has all these ports you listed. You didn't list eSATA (which is only a card away on a Mac Pro) so it seems unimportant to you.

iMac has 4 RAM slots, same as the low end Mac Pro, and the same max RAM.

I'll give you the choice of graphics card and monitor, and agree if I earned a living via computer power, I'd rather have the Mac Pro. However, in most other situations, the iMac is the equal or better compared to the low end Mac Pro.

I think the four internal HDD bays, the choice of a proper GPU (4870) and the ability to shove in a 3.33Ghz W3590 when they come down to a decent level sold it for me.

Edit: Besides, nice of MacRumours to post lost of news stories on this bug now its been fixed, not like last October or anything when we were doing all the hard work finding out about it.

Erik Slivka wrote "The report notes that the software update released by Apple last week is limited to machines running Mac OS X Snow Leopard, while users of Apple's Mac OS X Leopard had also reported similar issues when playing audio. Shouldn't that have been "The report notes that the software update released by Apple last week is limited to machines running Mac OS X Snow Leopard. While users of Apple's Mac OS X Leopard had also reported similar issues when playing audio, it is unclear whether Apple is planning a similar software patch for Leopard-based systems."

Well, that would explain why you sounded confused. If you want to pretend things don't exist, go for it...but you probably might want to get back to reality when you are actually discussing it with other people.

While I agree the quad MP is a terrible purchase, it does have some advantages over an iMac.

Thus when reading a generic comparison of "iMac vs Mac Pro"...

Except you weren't reading that comparison. I specifically said LOW END Mac Pro. Which is the quad. Glad you finally were able to figure it out.

That's a bizarre comment that has nothing to do with the topic.

Bingo. But there's a weak explanation in the post above yours, if you buy it.

iMac has all these ports you listed.

But the MP has more (hence "tons" of ports) FW (five instead of one) and separate optical audio instead of combined ports.

"Lots"? I count two after the fix (and one before), and this second one contains new info.

If you don't want to read other peoples' posts, nobody is forcing you to, sad smiley.

Here

I read somewhere that Apple fired 17 people of the Final Cut team recently. I don't remember where I read that, though. Amongst them were some key people too, according to the report.

Note: This is a Page 2 News Item

AE Portal News reported last week on a Twitter post claiming that Apple has laid off 40 members of its Final Cut team focused on the company's professional-level video editing software tools. The cuts were apparently focused on remote teams based in the Los Angeles and Austin areas.

ESATA is not a standard option, but can easily be added to a Mac Pro.

The Quad Core Mac Pro can now be upgraded to 32GB of RAM.

The lowest of the low end Mac Pro's is the only one that is even comparable to the iMac. But you still give up everything that I listed. And still have an all-in-one that is not easily user upgradeable.

My main point is that I will give up a few seconds on a random benchmark for the expandability of the Mac Pro.

Yes, and the one before could have had our ££££ machines fixed MONTHS earlier.

I even emailed arn with the thread and a brief overview in december and got nothing.

It shouldn't have taken so long for this issues (which was a bloody massive one) for this to have made it to the front page.

If you had a MP2009 you would understand.

The machines even got hot with a FW or USB audio interface just hooked up and no apps even running.

Which is why us Leopard users (you know Apple, the OS my machine came with!) who would definitely experience difficulties concerning pro audio app's and plug-ins and a SL upgrade really need a patch ;)
