i have an imac 24 inch 2.4 ghz, i've bought it in 6th of march 2007, i'm going for the mac pro soon i guess, so i'll say wait until Nehalem processors arrive because if you bought the mac pro now, your gonna regret the day you bought it when the Nehalem is available, just like what happen to me, even though if you dont need Nehalem processors, you can wait for the prices to drop for the old mac pro at least  please dont do the same mistake that i did
So the more you wait the more exciting it well be
and by the way, dont forget the apple displays are gonna change soon maybe or at least some prices drop, so this way you got two new fresh devices from apple [Mac pro (Nehalem) and the new apple displays] i'll say ouch that to coooool
good luck with your choice

Buying advice is always the same, no matter which product, no matter what time.

If you need it now, buy it now.

If you don't need it now and the product hasn't just been updated recently, then you might as well wait till the next version comes out.

It makes sense if you can wait and don't really need it right now. And at the moment Nehalem will arrive, a new and much better technology will be in the pipeline. And so on and so on.

Does Apple drop its prises for Macs? As far as I know, it just introduces upgraded models at the same prise.

No. It doesn't. 17% of people have an HDTV, and of that, 30% have heard of Blu-ray. That's a little less than five percent of the population.

Everyone needs to know that ALL statistics and polls are a complete crock. 17% of people WHO TOOK THE SURVEY have an HDTV and 30% of them have heard of Blu-ray.

That survey may have been of 10,000 people in New York or it could have been of 100 in Tulsa. My point is that no survey should, or can, be believed as a fact. They are a rough guesstimate at best.

Some people here say that the Mac Pro will be dropping FB-DIMMs with Nehalem. I wonder why they think that. Especially since there is a variant of Nehalem that uses FB-DIMMs. If you look on the Wikipedia chart, the release date of that variant is Q4 2009.

I want the Mac Pros at MacWorld '09 like everyone else. We will not see new Mac Pros until MacWorld '10.

With either release date, no intelligent is going to regret purchasing a computer six to eighteen months before a refresh. Technology changes, and if you regret purchasing the fastest single computer on the planet, then you either don't need it or don't understand why it exists in the first place.

The thing is, it hurts to buy a Mac Pro now when you realize the price is exactly the same as it was six months ago for the exact same hardware. This is not normal in the computer world except with Apple.

HP, Dell, IBM, Fujitsu all do this with workstations, pricing doesn't tend to change unless main hardware does.

Look
Where are you getting 16 cores?

From what's listed, the Gainestown seems the most likely CPU for the MacPro in '09.

There was alot of confusion over 8 core processors when the Nehalem information came out, Intel talked about native 8 core CPUs and the tech media assumed that they would replace the current high end quad cores. As there has been only a little written about Nehalem since last year, its not suprising people are confused.

You are looking at the MP processors which designed to be used for servers utilizing over 2 processors where FB-DIMMs are still needed. Workstations and the common dual processor servers will be using ECC DDR3 memory, not FB-DIMMS. The timeline should be similar to last year, release in Q4 2008, shipped in workstations in January.

It has also already "leaked" on another Mac forum that the Mac Pro memory
will "be changing" for the next MP, according to OWC. That was all the detail
allowed to be given though.

Umbongo:
Thanks, and I agree. I didn't know where that information was obtained, so I posted the link to what I was aware of, and hoped for clarification or confirmation.

This combined with the addition of a core management component to Snow Leopard, should make for a very powerful MacPro. ;)

No, as a rule.

Because Apple doesn't really lower prices, the time to buy any given piece of hardware is immediately when it comes out. If you can wait for Nehalem, you absolutely should. If you need it now or can make money with it now, you might want to consider buying.

The previous Mac Pro generation was a great deal when it first came out. By the time the Penryns were getting ready to come out, it was an absurd rip-off, especially where the video cards were concerned. Technology is constantly getting better and cheaper, so with Apple's pricing you'll get the best value buying a machine right when it comes out.

But yes, there is always something new and better around the corner. I think Nehalem will be a very significant step up, but a Penryn Mac Pro does everything I need at the moment.
